Oriental postpartum care helps body recovery

By Lee Seung-hunChildbirth is a blessing in and by itself, and to the women who go through it, it is quite a great emotional and physical experience. Physiologically speaking, a woman’s body goes through multiple changes that need to be addressed so that it can return to its pre-pregnancy state. Hence, the need for postpartum care rises. Without proper postpartum care, the changes in the mother’s body and mind may not fully be restored and suffer various types of postpartum disorders for a long period. Some Korean readers have heard of the old Korean adage of “three/seven days.” The term refers to the first three weeks right after the delivery. In the old days, for the duration of this period, the house with a newborn baby would be marked with straw twines to prevent visits from relatives and neighbors. Medically speaking, this period is critical as lochia is discharged from where placenta has been and the uterus contracts and recovers from pregnancy. Taking care of the new mother’s body for this critical period forms the basis for a proper postpartum car

(310) Where is your healing place?

By Janet Shin How are you enjoying your summer vacation? Have you already been somewhere or are you planning something else? When people consider a holiday resort, some feel like going mountains while others prefer beaches. If they are inclined toward a certain place, is there any reason why? You might think that it is simply associated with a personal propensity, whether by a generation or by a gender. However have you ever thought that your selection is led by other intrinsic sources? Let’s think about our appetite, for comparison. People learn from their experiences or instinct to pick certain tastes. Their favorite food is chicken or beef and others may be a vegetarian, meanwhile their flavor can be sweet, spicy or even bitter. Our body has its own agreeable food, which depends on our health conditions, seasonal and other various reasons. Most importantly, those who are sensitive to discern what their body tries to tell can adopt what is truly needed. Oriental medicine observes our body, the posture, colors and shapes, and sees how it displays its proble

Heat can be dangerous for babies

By Jane Han So it's true, when you have kids, you don't know what's next.I'm talking about last Friday. One minute, I was enjoying a moment of peace and sense of accomplishment with all my girls down for their regular nap.The next minute, I was sitting in the ambulance having a meltdown with my six-month-old Lauren hooked up to an oxygen mask.  My poor baby had just suffered from her first febrile seizure. What on earth is a febrile seizure?I, myself, had never even heard of the term until three days ago ― until I thought my daughter almost died from it.Febrile seizures are full-body convulsions that are caused by high fevers or a sudden spike in body temperature. Some common symptoms include a sudden stiffening of the body, change in skin color to blue or purple, and a painful cry, all of which were signs that Lauren showed when the nanny first found her shaking and screaming in her crib.I had just left home to run some quick errands when I got a call from the nanny, who was freaking out after witnessing the baby's unusual behavior. She urged me to call 911, but I thought

Husband and wife differ in child-rearing

Korea Times copy editor Jon Rabiroff’s son takes his first-ever dip during a recent trip to a community pool. The visit brought up some never-before-discussed differences in child-rearing between Rabiroff and his wife./ Courtesy of Jon RabiroffBy Jon Rabiroff Before our baby was born six months ago, my wife and I talked every day about how we wanted to raise our boy ― from the food he would eat to the sports he would play.We seemingly had all our bases covered so, by the time our son arrived, I thought my wife and I were in lockstep when it came to every decision we were going to make from the birth of of our baby until the day he moves out of the house. That is, until recently, when I noticed a few subtle, and some glaring, differences in the way we approach how and what to do with our son.I want him exposed to all manner of things, so by the time he is old enough to make his own decisions he will be battle-tested and ready to take on any challenge. My wife, it seems, wants to take a somewhat more protective approach to his upbringing.I should have seen this coming. A
