Hanbok exhibition reflects traditional values

The event runs until Oct. 1.The show, organized by the Hanbok Advancement Center, Kyungwoon Museum, Lee Rhee Za Gallery and Korea Tourism Organization, looks back on the history of the traditional clothing and the changes in style it has gone through with the influence of Western culture since Korea gained its independence from Japan in 1945. The NCCK's new work, "Song of the Red Cliff," currently staged at the National Theater of Korea on Namsan Mountain, central Seoul, offers a glimpse of its possibilities."Song of the Red Cliff" is based on "Jeokbyeokga," one of the five surviving pansori pieces compiled by Shin Jae-hyo (1812-1884). The seven-day event, titled the “Man Go Dang Exhibition,” will feature the display of collections of antiques, which are based on the theme of the life and death of ancestors. The shop owns a vast collection of ancient art pieces, such as puppets, wooden furniture, ceramics and paintings at Janganpyeong, Seoul, which were collected over the past 40 years. The first floor of the exhibit hall introduces the life of ancestors from the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), featuring collections of white porcelains, white and blue porcelain and grayish-blue-powdered celadons. A unique version of the pansori “Simcheongga” will be staged at the Sejong Chamber Hall of the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in central Seoul, Sept. 24. The first performance of the Sejong Center’s Midday Pansori Concert series, “Shimcheong Reconstructed” will take place at 11 a.m. in an attempt to make pansori (traditional Korean narrative music) more accessible to the public. “Shimcheong Reconstructed” has taken “Simcheongga” and turned it into a one-woman pansori performance. Pansori master Kim Tae-hee will both sing and narrate, and will not be accompanied by a master drummer. The story about a girl named Simcheong and her blind father, “Simcheongga” is one of the five surviving pieces of the Korean pansori storytelling tradition. Tickets are 20,000 won. A traditional Korean liquor museum will open on Oct. 14 in Wanju, North Jeolla Province.The three-story building, on a 60,000-square-meter site, will feature the history of Korean liquor and relics.
