    Jeonbuk National University launches global network of leading universities, companies

    Jeonbuk National University is launching its largest-ever international cooperation network, bringing together presidents of leading universities worldwide, global companies and international educational organizations. The university said Monday that it will establish a Global Advisory Committee comprising presidents of its overseas partner universities and launch major projects in collaboration with global companies and international organizations. The initiative represents an expanded cooperation model that goes beyond academic exchanges between universities by incorporating the expertise of global industries and international organizations. The Global Advisory Committee will include presidents of partner universities representing North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. Among those institutions are Purdue University in the United States, Universite Sorbonne Nouvelle in France, China University of Geosciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada in Indonesia and Mohammed V University in Rabat in Morocco.     Kookmin University team develops technology to optimize 3D object detection models for self-driving

    A Kookmin University research team has developed SharedKD, a technology that efficiently compresses 3D object detection models for autonomous driving, in collaboration with Hyundai Motor. The university said Tuesday that the findings were presented at the 2026 Design Automation Conference, a prestigious international conference in the field of design automation, held in Long Beach, California, from July 26-29. Kim Jang-ho, a professor at the university’s College of Computer Science, led the research team. Two master’s students at the Graduate School of AI and SW, Cho Hyun-joon and An Sang-ho, also participated in the study and contributed to the development of the technology. The university noted that the SharedKD technology differs from conventional knowledge distillation methods that use separate teacher and student models. Instead, SharedKD uses the entire network of a single 3D object detection model as the teacher model and a subnetwork generated through pruning as the student model.     English edition of Confucian philosopher Yi Ik's work published by Oxford University Press

    A research team at Sungkyunkwan University’s College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy has published a complete English translation of “Sachil Sinpyeon,” a philosophical work by Yi Ik, a prominent Confucian philosopher of the late Joseon period who went by the pen name Seongho. The University said Wednesday that the first English edition, “Seongho Yi Ik: The New Compilation of the Four Beginnings and Seven Emotions,” was published by Oxford University Press earlier this month. Yi’s work was translated into English by a research team comprising professors Back Young-sun and Park So-jeong and researcher Ha Na. Back, a professor of Eastern philosophy, serves as director of the Sungkyun Institute for Confucian Studies and East Asian Philosophy, while Park, a professor of Korean philosophy, is the director of the Institute of Korean Philosophy and Culture.     Sodikov Normatjon had an older brother already studying in Korea when he began exploring scholarship options from Uzbekistan. That early window into Korean university life pointed him toward the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) and made the prospect of moving abroad feel, if not easy, at least less uncertain. "GKS was a life-changing opportunity for me," Normatjon said during a recent interview with The Korea Times. "Studying abroad can bring financial and cultural uncertainties, but the scholarship took away much of that burden and allowed me to focus fully on my studies." Normatjon arrived in Korea in 2018 and the program has since helped him learn Korean, build a career and start a family in the country.     Private schools push back against Korea's free tuition plan for nat'l universities

    A government proposal to make tuition free for some 64,000 incoming students at national universities next year is facing mounting opposition from private universities. Critics warn the policy could put private institutions at a further disadvantage in attracting students and deepen their financial struggles. The concerns are particularly acute among private universities outside the Seoul metropolitan area, which are already struggling with declining enrollment and financial pressures while facing continued restrictions on tuition hikes.     Kookmin University launches innovation alliance with AI, software companies

    Kookmin University is stepping up efforts to strengthen industry-academia collaboration with artificial intelligence (AI) and software companies. The university said Thursday that it held a ceremony to launch the KMU AX Innovation Alliance with high-tech companies on its campus in northern Seoul on July 24. The ceremony was attended by senior university officials and professors, including Sohn Jin-sik, vice president for planning and general director of the Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation, and Hwang Sun-tae, dean of the College of Computer Science.     Sungkyunkwan University researchers develop catalyst to turn CO2 into useful chemicals

    Researchers at Sungkyunkwan University have developed a highly efficient catalyst for converting carbon dioxide (CO2) into valuable chemicals in a collaborative study. The university said Wednesday that its research team, led by professors Kim Jung-kyu and Lee Sang-uck of the School of Chemical Engineering, developed the catalyst in collaboration with a research team led by Dr. Koh Jai-hyun of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology. Kim Jun-young, a professor in the Department of Biomedical-Chemical Engineering at the Catholic University of Korea, also participated in the study. Experiments demonstrated that the catalyst successfully converted CO2 into 2-propanol, a high-value industrial chemical and complex alcohol widely used as a semiconductor cleaning agent and disinfectant.     University of Seoul celebrates 1st graduates of jointly created urban planning department in Cambodia

    The University of Seoul and the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP) have celebrated the first graduates of their jointly established Department of Sustainable Urban Planning and Development. The university said Monday that the graduation ceremony was held at RUPP’s campus in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on July 31 for 31 students who completed the department’s undergraduate program. The event marked the first graduation since the department was established in 2022. The graduation represented a major milestone in the Leading University Project for International Cooperation, which has been led by the Korean government and implemented by the University of Seoul’s International School of Urban Sciences since 2021.     Sejong University research center, 2 firms join forces to build sovereign AI ecosystem

    A Sejong University research center has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with two artificial intelligence (AI) technology companies to establish a sovereign AI ecosystem. The university said Sunday that its Future GPU Research Institute signed the MOU with Certisilicon and ThetaON on July 7 to reduce reliance on overseas AI semiconductors and cloud computing infrastructure. The agreement aims to build a sovereign AI ecosystem for industries such as defense and manufacturing that require high levels of data security and independent control over AI infrastructure.     Kookmin University has partnered with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) to launch an AI Ph.D. Fellowship Program aimed at training Palestinian researchers in artificial intelligence (AI).     A Sejong University student won an excellent paper award at the 21st International Conference on Intelligent Computing (INTCOM 2026) held in Prague, the Czech Republic, from July 3-6. The university said Friday that Jang Ye-rin, a student majoring in artificial intelligence data science, earned the award for her paper, “AmbICL: Retrieval-Augmented In-Context Learning for Ambiguous Robotic Command Resolution.” INTCOM is an international academic conference in the field of information and communication technology, organized by the Korean Society for Internet Information. Jang was a member of a research team led by Gu Yeong-hyeon, a professor in the Department of Artificial Intelligence Data Science at Sejong University.     Sejong University professor wins best paper award at international tourism conference

    Ahn Young-joo, a professor in the College of Hospitality and Tourism at Sejong University, won an award for best paper at the sixth International Conference on Responsible Tourism and Hospitality, held in Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia, from July 7-11. The university said Ahn analyzed online reviews written by tourists who visited Bukchon Hanok Village in central Seoul to examine changes in their tourism experiences and assess the effectiveness of policies addressing overtourism. The study was recognized for its originality and academic contributions. It found that the policies introduced to mitigate overtourism affected tourists’ perceptions and experiences.
