    Sodikov Normatjon had an older brother already studying in Korea when he began exploring scholarship options from Uzbekistan. That early window into Korean university life pointed him toward the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) and made the prospect of moving abroad feel, if not easy, at least less uncertain. "GKS was a life-changing opportunity for me," Normatjon said during a recent interview with The Korea Times. "Studying abroad can bring financial and cultural uncertainties, but the scholarship took away much of that burden and allowed me to focus fully on my studies." Normatjon arrived in Korea in 2018 and the program has since helped him learn Korean, build a career and start a family in the country. Beyond financial support, the scholarship also helped him navigate the linguistic and cultural challenges of living abroad. Its Korean-language training and cultural programs gave him an early foundation for adapting to life in Korea and connecting with people in the country.     Private schools push back against Korea's free tuition plan for nat'l universities

    A government proposal to make tuition free for some 64,000 incoming students at national universities next year is facing mounting opposition from private universities. Critics warn the policy could put private institutions at a further disadvantage in attracting students and deepen their financial struggles. The concerns are particularly acute among private universities outside the Seoul metropolitan area, which are already struggling with declining enrollment and financial pressures while facing continued restrictions on tuition hikes. During a policy briefing at Cheong Wa Dae in Seoul on Wednesday, the Ministry of Education said it is considering providing full tuition scholarships to some 64,000 freshmen at 30 national universities outside the Seoul metropolitan area beginning in the 2027 academic year. Under the plan, it would gradually expand to cover all undergraduate students at those universities within the current administration's term.     Undergraduate student wins excellent paper award at International Conference on Intelligent Computing

    A Sejong University student won an excellent paper award at the 21st International Conference on Intelligent Computing (INTCOM 2026) held in Prague, the Czech Republic, from July 3-6. The university said Friday that Jang Ye-rin, a student majoring in artificial intelligence data science, earned the award for her paper, “AmbICL: Retrieval-Augmented In-Context Learning for Ambiguous Robotic Command Resolution.” INTCOM is an international academic conference in the field of information and communication technology, organized by the Korean Society for Internet Information. Jang was a member of a research team led by Gu Yeong-hyeon, a professor in the Department of Artificial Intelligence Data Science at Sejong University.     Sejong University professor wins best paper award at international tourism conference

    Ahn Young-joo, a professor in the College of Hospitality and Tourism at Sejong University, won an award for best paper at the sixth International Conference on Responsible Tourism and Hospitality, held in Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia, from July 7-11. The university said Ahn analyzed online reviews written by tourists who visited Bukchon Hanok Village in central Seoul to examine changes in their tourism experiences and assess the effectiveness of policies addressing overtourism. The study was recognized for its originality and academic contributions. It found that the policies introduced to mitigate overtourism affected tourists’ perceptions and experiences.     The University of Seoul won the grand prize in a best practice competition for its operation of a contract-based graduate program at the Industry-Academia Collaboration Forum on July 16.     Korea University seeks to turn International Summer Campus into global education platform

    Korea University’s International Summer Campus (ISC) has grown into one of Asia’s premier international summer programs since its inception in 2004. The university now aims to transform the short-term summer program into a global platform for long-term academic engagement through degree programs, graduate studies or collaborative research. The university said the ISC’s strength lies in going beyond traditional academic programs and providing international students with firsthand exposure to Korean culture.     9 national universities partner with Ministry of Education, IBK to advance technology commercialization

    Nine regional national universities have signed a partnership agreement with the Ministry of Education and the Industrial Bank of Korea (IBK) to promote technology commercialization and startup creation for regional innovation and growth.
