Recognition or sidelining? Reactions mixed as Grammys unveil Asian pop category

The Grammy Awards will add a Best Asian Pop Music Performance category, a move read as recognition of Asian music's global reach after years of criticism that the show favored English-language acts and lagged behind the times. The Recording Academy, which runs the Grammys, announced the rule change on its website Tuesday (local time). The new category takes effect at the 69th Grammy Awards next year, alongside four others — Best Latin Song, Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance, Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance and Best Traditional Folk Album. For Korea, the Asian pop category was the most welcome news of the bunch. BTS and other K-pop acts have topped Billboard's main chart and sold out world tours for years, yet the Grammys remained the one stage they could not crack. Because Grammy wins were especially hard to come by, some saw the change as a milestone cracked open by years of persistent knocking from K-pop music. "Now that there is finally a category where K-pop artists can be officially recognized, it opens the door for far more artists to enter the conversation t

Review'The Price of Confession': Jeon Do-yeon, Kim Go-eun in prestige pulp

3.5/5 stars Lead cast: Jeon Do-yeon, Kim Go-eun, Park Hae-soo Acclaimed Korean actresses Jeon Do-yeon (Crash Course in Romance) and Kim Go-eun (You and Everything Else) face off in the dynamic small-screen thriller "The Price of Confession," a murder mystery balancing prestige and pulp with a wealth of twists. Bold performances and punchy scripting by Kwon Jong-kwan — better known as the director of Sad Movie and Proof of Innocence — make the show a binge-worthy experience, though patience is required to navigate the slower, predictable first half before reaching the dizzying, eyebrow-raising second act. Jeon is An Yun-su, a free-spirited art teacher married to a painter and mother to a young daughter. Her happy life shatters one evening when she discovers her husband stabbed in his studio. He dies in her arms, leaving her grief-stricken. Following her husband's funeral, a dark chapter begins as she becomes the prime suspect in his murder. With damning evidence mounting against her, she is sent to prison, where she awaits trial. There, she meets inmate Mo-eun (Kim), also awaiting trial

Actor Cho Jin-woong says he will retire amid criticism over past juvenile offenses

Actor Cho Jin-woong announced through his agency Saturday that he will retire from acting, as criticism continues to deepen over past offenses he committed as a minor. In a message to media, he apologized for disappointing his fans and said that his decision is the right way to bear the responsibility for his past wrongdoing. The controversy erupted after a local media outlet reported on allegations that Cho had committed an offense in his teens and was tried as a juvenile delinquent. Cho has acknowledged having juvenile records but denied allegations linking him to sexual assault. "I sincerely apologize for disappointing everyone who has trusted and supported me due to my disgraceful past actions," he said in the message released by his agency. "I humbly accept all the criticism, and as of today, I will halt all activities and bring my acting career to an end," he said. "I will do my utmost to reflect on myself and stand again as a better person." Online rumors have surfaced alleging that Cho was involved in a car theft and sexual assault while in high school and subsequently served time

Will K-drama ‘Signal 2’ survive? Cho Jin-woong scandal puts one of Korea’s biggest dramas at risk

Actor Cho Jin-woong’s acknowledgment of portions of his alleged juvenile-offense history is sending shockwaves through the Korean entertainment industry, raising urgent questions about his upcoming projects — including the highly anticipated second season of the hit drama “Signal.” Cho’s agency, Saram Entertainment, said Dec. 5 that after checking with the actor directly, it confirmed “there was wrongdoing during his minor years,” indirectly acknowledging the circulating allegations. The agency added that the events occurred more than 30 years ago, making it “difficult to fully verify the circumstances,” and noted that all related legal procedures have long been closed. However, the company drew a firm line, saying, “We clearly state that he is not connected to any acts related to sexual assault,” strongly denying the most serious allegation. The agency also apologized, saying Cho made “regrettable decisions” even after reaching adulthood and that he feels deep remorse. The ripple effect is already hitting Cho’s scheduled work. SBS planned to air a documentar

BTS' Jungkook and aespa's Winter dating rumors draw comparisons to V and Jennie as agencies stay silent

K-pop fans are in a frenzy as a wave of alleged “evidence” fuels dating rumors between BTS member Jungkook and aespa’s Winter — while both of their agencies remain completely silent, prompting speculation that the pattern may mirror the long-running V–Jennie saga. Posts alleging that the two idols are in a relationship spread rapidly across Korean online communities and global social media Dec. 5, with users compiling what they claim are visual clues linking the pair. One of the most circulated claims is that Jungkook and Winter have similar dog-face tattoos placed in nearly the same spot on their arms. Photos showing the artists’ exposed arms — with fans pointing to tattoo shapes they argue appear alike — quickly went viral, becoming the centerpiece of the fast-moving rumor. Other users pointed to matching fashion items such as shorts, slippers, and in-ear monitors, asserting that several were identical or shared unusually similar designs. Some also revived speculation that the two once used couple-style social media IDs, adding further fuel to the online debate. Despite

Korea’s blockbuster fatigue: Viewers now want depth, not spectacle

Korean audiences are turning away from formulaic genre films and gravitating instead toward more human-centered stories that strip away excess spectacle. In a cultural moment saturated with ever-intensifying stimuli, viewers appear increasingly drawn to films that offer warmth, emotion and everyday experience rather than scale or shock value. In 2025, diversity films — works that break from conventional genre formulas and present unfamiliar perspectives — found notable success in the Korean market. Instead of large-scale conflicts between good and evil or visually elaborate, incident-driven plots, audiences embraced stories rooted in personal emotion and lived experience. The box-office leader among Korean films released this year was “My Daughter Is a Zombie,” which earned praise for blending zombie action with family drama. Unlike typical zombie narratives centered on survival, the film focused on a father’s struggle to protect his daughter, combining genre thrills with human-centered storytelling. Director Yeon Sang-ho’s low-budget film “The Ugly” also became a hit. P

Park Na-rae breaks silence, says ex-managers demanded hundreds of millions of won

Korean TV star Park Na-rae has spoken out for the first time after being caught up in an abuse-of-power controversy involving two former managers who, according to her agency, allegedly demanded enormous payouts after resigning. Park, one of Korea’s best-known comedians and variety personalities, became the center of debate online this week after local reports suggested that staff members had accused her of unfair treatment. The claims quickly spread across social media, triggering heated discussions among the MZ-generation — a Korean term referring to millennials and Gen Z — and raising questions about the treatment of employees in Korea’s entertainment industry. On Dec. 5, her agency, Npark Co., said it is “checking the exact facts” surrounding media reports based on statements from Park and her former managers. Agency says ex-managers asked for share of company's revenue Npark said two employees who had worked with Park for about 15 months recently resigned and received standard severance. Actor Cho Jin-woong, whose legal name is Cho Won-jun, is facing allegations that he committed serious crimes as a teenager. On Friday, entertainment outlet Dispatch reported that Cho received juvenile protection measures and was sent to a juvenile detention center while in high school. The report said Cho faced a criminal trial in 1994, when he was a second-year student, on charges of robbery and rape under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes. Citing an informant, Dispatch said Cho and a group of delinquent youths stole a car that had been left on the roadside with the engine running, then drove it without a license while committing multiple offenses. The informant alleged that “Cho Jin-woong’s group attempted sexual assault inside the stolen vehicle, and he was sent to a juvenile facility because of the incident, spending half of his third year of high school in correctional custody.” The report also raised allegations that Cho continued to have run-ins with police even after starting his acting career as an adult. BTS' Jungkook and aespa's Winter embroiled in dating rumors

Dating rumors surrounding two of K-pop's biggest global stars — Jungkook of BTS and Winter of aespa — are spreading rapidly online, while their respective agencies have offered no comment, further intensifying fan speculation. According to music industry sources, the rumors have gained traction based on claims that the two idols share identical tattoos, referred to by some users as "couple tattoos." Internet posts allege that both Jungkook and Winter have tattoos depicting three puppies, interpreting the matching imagery as a possible hint at a relationship. Additional "evidence" raised by online observers includes similarities in the design of their in-ear monitors used onstage. Some users have also pointed to the structure of their past Instagram usernames, noting that both previously used a similar format: "imwinter" and "imjungkook" (though Jungkook has since changed his account name). As of Friday afternoon, neither BigHit Music, representing Jungkook, nor SM Entertainment, representing Winter, has issued an official statement addressing the rumors.
