Recognition or sidelining? Reactions mixed as Grammys unveil Asian pop category

The Grammy Awards will add a Best Asian Pop Music Performance category, a move read as recognition of Asian music's global reach after years of criticism that the show favored English-language acts and lagged behind the times. The Recording Academy, which runs the Grammys, announced the rule change on its website Tuesday (local time). The new category takes effect at the 69th Grammy Awards next year, alongside four others — Best Latin Song, Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance, Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance and Best Traditional Folk Album. For Korea, the Asian pop category was the most welcome news of the bunch. BTS and other K-pop acts have topped Billboard's main chart and sold out world tours for years, yet the Grammys remained the one stage they could not crack. Because Grammy wins were especially hard to come by, some saw the change as a milestone cracked open by years of persistent knocking from K-pop music. "Now that there is finally a category where K-pop artists can be officially recognized, it opens the door for far more artists to enter the conversation t

BTS' Jung Kook appears on Rolling Stone covers in Korea, Britain, Japan

BTS member Jung Kook has become the cover star of Rolling Stone magazine in three countries — Korea, Britain and Japan — marking the first time the publication's editions have jointly featured a single artist, his agency said Tuesday. BigHit Music said the cover collaboration showcases Jungkook as the first-ever Korean solo artist to appear on the front of the British edition of Rolling Stone. The feature includes an exclusive interview and a photo spread highlighting the 28-year-old's musical direction and ambitions. In the interview, Jungkook described the current phase of his career as a time for a new leap forward and he wants to be "an artist who doesn't get dragged by the flow, but creates the flow." Beyond the print issues, his cover images appeared as digital editions of Rolling Stone in the United States, France, India, the Philippines and China, extending his presence across a total of eight national editions. Jungkook recently surpassed 10 billion cumulative streams on Spotify with his solo releases, setting a milestone as the first Korean solo artist to achieve the feat. Hi

Comedian Jo Se-ho quits two major TV shows over alleged link to mobster

Comedian Jo Se-ho will step down from two major television programs following allegations linking him to an organized-crime figure, his agency said Tuesday. A2Z Entertainment announced that the 43-year-old entertainer will leave the popular variety shows "You Quiz on the Block" on tvN and "Two Days & One Night" on KBS 2TV. "Jo Se-ho feels a deep sense of responsibility for the suspicions and controversy recently raised around him," the agency said. "He voluntarily decided to withdraw after consulting with the production teams, out of concern that his continued appearance could place a burden on the programs." The agency, however, denied the allegations as "entirely groundless," rejecting claims that Jo has direct or indirect ties to the organized-crime figure or that he accepted lavish gifts in return for promoting the man's business. A2Z said Jo plans to pursue legal action against what it described as misinformation and will work to restore his reputation. "He vows to return once all doubts have been cleared," the agency said. The production team of the KBS program confirmed Jo's departu

Overseas fans split over Cho Jin-woong's retirement after past crime resurfaces

SEATTLE — When news broke last week that Cho Jin-woong would retire from acting, it hit like a thunderbolt. Many international fans were caught off guard, unsure how a teenage crime from decades ago could suddenly end a long and respected career. Reactions abroad have been complicated. Some viewers felt shocked and disappointed. Others tried to understand the context in Korea, where public figures are often expected to uphold strict personal standards. Many said they needed more information before deciding how to feel. The story has raised difficult questions about how societies balance justice, accountability and the possibility of change. Supporters have been vocal, with one international fan writing on a popular Reddit thread, “It seems like he did his time and cleaned his act up. Unless there are additional instances of misconduct for which he wasn’t punished already, it’s a real shame he’s had to quit acting for this.” Another commenter questioned Korean cultural expectations, saying, “Is rehabilitation or forgiveness considered unobtainable?” A third added, “What

Comedian Park Na-rae suspends TV activities amid abuse, illegal medical treatment allegations

Comedian Park Na-rae said Monday she will suspend all broadcasting activities amid escalating allegations of abuse against her former managers and claims she received illegal medical treatments. Park, a prominent TV personality on MBC's hit variety show "I Live Alone," announced on social media that she had "decided to halt broadcasting activities until everything is clearly resolved," saying she could not continue "causing trouble to the program and colleagues." MBC was quick to issue a statement to announce its decision to suspend her regular appearance on the show, citing "the gravity of the case and her intent to suspend broadcasting activities." The broadcaster also canceled production of the upcoming travel reality show "Nado Sinna" ("I Am Excited Too"), in which Park had been cast as one of four hosts for a January premiere, over the controversy. The channel appears to have made the decision, despite having already filmed some portions, due to the program's heavy reliance on Park. The production team of tvN's weekend variety show "Amazing Saturday" also said it would part ways with

'KPop Demon Hunters' soundtrack, Stray Kids album rank No. 3, No. 4 on Billboard chart

The soundtrack of the Netflix animated film "KPop Demon Hunters" and boy group Stray Kids' new album "Do It" have both secured places in the top 10 of the U.S. Billboard main albums chart this week. Billboard said on Sunday (U.S. time) that the "Kpop Demon Hunters" soundtrack climbed two spots to No. 3 on the Billboard 200, compared with the previous week. Stray Kids' "Do It," which entered the chart at No. 1 a week earlier, slipped three places to No. 4. The K-pop octet had already set a milestone by sending eight consecutive albums to the top of the Billboard 200, a rare feat for any act on the chart. This week's No. 1 went to U.S. pop star Taylor Swift's "The Life of a Showgirl," which has now spent a total of eight non-consecutive weeks on the top. The Billboard 200 ranks the most popular albums of the week in the United States, measured by equivalent album units, comprising physical album sales, track equivalent albums and streaming equivalent albums. During the latest tracking period, the animation soundtrack earned the equivalent of 66,000 album units, while Stray Kids' "Do It" gene

Bitter truths behind celebrity friendships in Korea

Can genuine friendship exist in the entertainment industry? Affectionate moments between celebrities like calling one another “best friends” or physical closeness often become a form of content consumed by the public. At times, these relationships function as a kind of asset, helping to enhance one another’s image. Superficial relationships exist in every field, but the entertainment world is viewed differently because even private relationships are exposed and consumed in real time. As a result, friendship is weighted differently than in most industries, and it is far more easily commercialized. A single photograph with the right person can raise someone’s brand value, while one controversy can instantly turn that same proximity into a liability. That is why when a scandal breaks, friendships are often the first thing to disappear. Recently, an idol group member became embroiled in controversy. Several entertainers who had previously appeared to have close ties quickly deleted photos and posts showing or mentioning the idol. When a celebrity faces a scandal or legal issue, even

Netflix, Disney+ accelerate push into Korean reality programming

When Netflix first entered the Korean market in the mid-2010s, industry experts and critics feared the streaming platform would become a “black hole” swallowing up local film and drama contents into what is steadily becoming the dominant distribution system and bypassing traditional broadcasting. Those concerns quickly proved true. Now, the same trend is unfolding with reality shows — a genre that has long served as a crucial pillar for Korean TV networks and cable channels that lost ground in terms of scripted content. The recent Netflix reality program "Three Idiots in Kenya" is a prime example. Released in late November, the series marks the first collaboration between Netflix and star producer Nah Yung-suk, known for creating hit shows for TV and cable channels. As a Netflix original, it was fully funded by the platform. The six-episode program follows three male entertainers as they travel through Kenya in a spin-off of the 2019 tvN variety series, "New Journey to the West," also produced by Nah. The new show retains nearly all the elements of its predecessor, from the cast a

BTS' RM says group grappled with whether to disband

RM, the leader of K-pop sensation BTS, has said the group had at times grappled with whether to disband or suspend activities during its hiatus as it is preparing a full-group comeback next spring. BTS is scheduled to reunite as a full group next year as all seven members have completed mandatory military service. While RM said preparations for BTS' new album are well under way for the comeback, he also acknowledged that the group had at times grappled with whether to disband or suspend activities. "(We've) thought for tens of thousands of times whether it would be good for us to disband or to suspend activities," RM said Saturday during a live broadcast on the K-pop fan community platform Weverse."What has kept this team going is how much we love each other, and the love and respect we have for those watching this livestream." RM said work on the new album is progressing steadily. In July, BTS announced it would return with a new album featuring all seven members and launch a world tour next spring. "Preparations for the album are almost being made," RM said. We practiced together yester

Review'The Price of Confession': Jeon Do-yeon, Kim Go-eun in prestige pulp

3.5/5 stars Lead cast: Jeon Do-yeon, Kim Go-eun, Park Hae-soo Acclaimed Korean actresses Jeon Do-yeon (Crash Course in Romance) and Kim Go-eun (You and Everything Else) face off in the dynamic small-screen thriller "The Price of Confession," a murder mystery balancing prestige and pulp with a wealth of twists. Bold performances and punchy scripting by Kwon Jong-kwan — better known as the director of Sad Movie and Proof of Innocence — make the show a binge-worthy experience, though patience is required to navigate the slower, predictable first half before reaching the dizzying, eyebrow-raising second act. Jeon is An Yun-su, a free-spirited art teacher married to a painter and mother to a young daughter. Her happy life shatters one evening when she discovers her husband stabbed in his studio. He dies in her arms, leaving her grief-stricken. Following her husband's funeral, a dark chapter begins as she becomes the prime suspect in his murder. With damning evidence mounting against her, she is sent to prison, where she awaits trial. There, she meets inmate Mo-eun (Kim), also awaiting trial
