Recognition or sidelining? Reactions mixed as Grammys unveil Asian pop category

The Grammy Awards will add a Best Asian Pop Music Performance category, a move read as recognition of Asian music's global reach after years of criticism that the show favored English-language acts and lagged behind the times. The Recording Academy, which runs the Grammys, announced the rule change on its website Tuesday (local time). The new category takes effect at the 69th Grammy Awards next year, alongside four others — Best Latin Song, Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance, Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance and Best Traditional Folk Album. For Korea, the Asian pop category was the most welcome news of the bunch. BTS and other K-pop acts have topped Billboard's main chart and sold out world tours for years, yet the Grammys remained the one stage they could not crack. Because Grammy wins were especially hard to come by, some saw the change as a milestone cracked open by years of persistent knocking from K-pop music. "Now that there is finally a category where K-pop artists can be officially recognized, it opens the door for far more artists to enter the conversation t

The company said it has been monitoring major online communities and social media platforms, where it found “a large volume of malicious posts and comments” directed at the singer. The agency said it has already begun pursuing both criminal complaints and civil claims against individuals who created or spread harmful content, adding that additional rounds of complaints will be filed after reviewing more evidence. The agency emphasized that it is collecting a substantial amount of data, noting that it will respond “without leniency.” The company also issued a direct warning to users spreadi

'KPop Demon Hunters' director to receive cultural merit

Maggie Kang, Korean-Canadian director of the Netflix hit animated film "KPop Demon Hunters," will be awarded South Korea's Okgwan (Jade Crown) Order of Cultural Merit for her role in boosting the global profile of K-culture, the culture ministry said Wednesday. The U.S.-produced animation, which fused K-pop energy and Korean shamanistic motifs, became the most-watched title in Netflix's history across both film and television categories, surpassing the monumental success of "Squid Game." The Okgwan Order is the fourth-highest class among the country's cultural decorations. The honor will be presented later Wednesday during the 2025 Korea Content Awards at COEX in southern Seoul, hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Creative Content Agency. This year's ceremony will recognize 24 individuals and 15 works for their contributions to developing the nation's content industry.

The show ranked No. 1 in the non-English TV category by logging 4.8 million views for the week ending Dec. 7, according to data from Netflix's official site Tudum. Released on Nov. 12, the SBS drama series debuted at No. 3 on the chart and climbed to No. 2 before securing the top spot in its third week. Director hails dream Netflix collaboration as 'Three Idiots in Kenya' climbs charts

Collaboration with Netflix was both a dream-come-true and a major learning opportunity, said one of the directors behind “Three Idiots in Kenya,” Netflix's Korean original reality show released on Nov. 25. “Netflix is a platform many Korean creatives dream of working with these days. We're honored and proud to have launched a program on the service,” director Kim Ye-seul said during an interview in Seoul, Tuesday. Kim directed the six-episode show together with Nah Yung-suk, who she has worked with since her time as an assistant director. The travel reality series follows comedian Lee Soo‑geun, rapper‑TV personality Eun Ji‑won and Super Junior’s Kyuhyun on a chaotic adventure in Kenya in a spin‑off of the “New Journey to the West” franchise, which helped cement Nah’s reputation as a star director. Having worked with all three cast members for years, Kim now steps up as a main director. Filming in Kenya was inspired by an event from “Three Meals in Iceland,” another spin-off in the same franchise. Kyuhyun had won a stay at a giraffe hotel in Kenya, and followi

Korean TV rocked by escalating ‘injection aunt’ scandal linked to Park Na-rae

South Korea’s entertainment industry is facing widening fallout from the so-called “injection aunt” controversy involving comedian Park Na-rae, who recently halted all activities. What began as allegations about an unlicensed medical provider has now spread to speculation involving SHINee member Key, drawing intense attention online. The scandal erupted after photos surfaced showing Park receiving intravenous drips and other treatments from a woman identified only as “A,” who allegedly does not have a medical license. Park had already been in the spotlight due to disputes with former managers, but this new allegation — involving IV treatments at a private home and proxy prescriptions for antidepressants — escalated public concern. Park’s agency told Xportsnews that they believed “A is a doctor with a valid medical license” and that Park had received only “a nutritional injection,” insisting the situation does not constitute “illegal medical practice.” However, the controversy intensified on Dec. 8 after the Korean Medical Association issued a strongly worded

Disney+ faces cascade of scandals as Korean stars spark delays and cancellations

Disney+ is facing a growing series of setbacks in Korea as multiple high-profile actors become embroiled in personal controversies, forcing the global streaming platform to delay major projects and pull scheduled programs. One of the biggest blows came from “Knock-Off,” originally slated for release in the first half of 2025. The series follows a man whose life is upended by the Asian financial crisis and who rises from an ordinary office worker to the king of the global counterfeit market. Once considered among Disney+ Korea’s most anticipated titles, the project was halted after lead actor Kim Soo-hyun became embroiled in controversy. Although production cautiously resumed, filming was suspended indefinitely just one month later. Disney+ later revealed its lineup for the second half of 2025, with “Knock-Off” noticeably absent. Choi Yeon-woo, head of local content at Walt Disney Company Korea, said the platform decided to postpone the release “after careful internal review,” adding that there were “no further updates beyond the initial statement.” The streaming service
