Fed's hawkish hold strengthens case for BOK's hike in November

The U.S. Federal Reserve's hawkish decision to hold interest rates steady has strengthened the case for the Bank of Korea (BOK) to raise its benchmark rate as early as next month, as stronger-than-expected growth and persistent inflation reinforce the need for further monetary tightening, analysts said Thursday. The Fed kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 3.75 to 4 percent on Wednesday (local time), but signaled that inflation remains elevated and reaffirmed its commitment to bringing inflation back to its 2 percent target. The decision has kept markets focused on the possibility of another Fed rate hike in December, raising the prospect that the BOK could pursue further tightening before its U.S. counterpart makes its next move. The BOK held its benchmark rate at 3 percent at its rate-setting meeting last Thursday, saying it needed more time to assess domestic and external economic conditions and the effects of two previous rate hikes. Recent economic data have strengthened the case for further tightening. Korea's real gross domestic product grew 1 percent in the third quarter

KRX to operate pre-, after-hour markets starting June 29

Korea's main bourse operator will begin operating a pre-market and an after-hours market on June 29, it said Monday, with an information session set to be held later in the day to introduce such a change to member firms. The move marks the first step in the Korea Exchange's (KRX) plan to introduce around-the-clock trading by December 2027, to compete with global exchanges, such as the Nasdaq, already taking steps to expand its trading hours to 24. The KRX is reportedly planning to operate a pre-market from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. and an after-hours market from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Official trading hours at the KRX currently run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Under the envisioned plan, trading hours will be extended from the current 6 1/2 hours to 11 1/2 hours. The information session will be held at the KRX's building in Seoul at 4 p.m., with the attendance of some 250 officials from member companies, the bourse operator added.

Gov't to begin monthly cash handouts in rural areas facing population decline

The government will begin providing monthly cash handouts to residents of rural areas facing population decline starting in late February, the budget ministry said Monday. Under the pilot program, residents of designated farming and fishing communities at risk of depopulation will each receive 150,000 won ($104) per month in local vouchers from 2026 to 2027, according to the Ministry of Planning and Budget. The project, which has completed a feasibility review, is expected to cost about 1.27 trillion won, the ministry said. Separately, the government will roll out an integrated medical, nursing and care support initiative in rural areas beginning in March. The program, led by district governments, aims to establish a community-based integrated care system. Since taking office, President Lee Jae Myung has pledged to promote balanced regional development, saying the government will increase budgetary support for regions outside the capital area.

Kosdaq soars to highest point in more than 25 years

The secondary bourse Kosdaq soared to its highest level in more than 25 years, Monday, finishing above 1,000 points and adding momentum to the accelerated rally alongside the benchmark KOSPI. The index ended at 1,064.41 points, up 70.48 points, or 7.09 percent, from the previous session, maintaining its upward momentum after opening strong at 1,003.90 points. It was the first time since Jan. 5, 2022, that the Kosdaq closed above the 1,000-point mark. In paricular, Monday's closing figure was the highest since Sept. 6, 2000, when it reached 1074.10 points. The Kosdaq 150 futures index — a basket of the top 150 stocks — rose 6.29 percent at one point, breaching the 6 percent threshold and triggering a five-minute buying sidecar halt on program trading, the first such occurrence in nine months. Institutional investors drove the market, with net purchases of 2.6 trillion won ($1.8 billion), while foreign investors have also been net buyers, purchasing 431 billion won. In contrast, individual investors net sold 2.9 trillion won. Among the top cap stocks were Alteogen, which gained 4.77 perc

Gold banking investment surges amid record-breaking prices

Gold investments through banks are surging as the precious metal sees prices hitting record highs, market watchers said Monday. The rapid rise in gold demand comes amid growing investor appetite for safe-haven assets as geopolitical uncertainty continues and the U.S. dollar weakens. According to financial market data, gold banking accounts at KB Kookmin, Shinhan and Woori had a combined balance of over 2.1 trillion won ($1.4 billion) as of Thursday. This is up 11.4 percent from the end of last month, when it stood at over 1.9 trillion won. The combined balance surpassed 2 trillion won just 10 months after it first crossed the trillion-won mark in March last year. International gold prices have recently exceeded $5,000 per ounce for the first time amid intensifying investor expectation that gold could be a hedge against future financial shocks. There is also a rise in gold bars sold at banks. From Jan. 1 to 22, the country’s top five banks — KB Kookmin, Shinhan, Hana, Woori, NH NongHyup — sold a combined 71.67 billion won’s worth of gold bars, about double the 35 billion won in gold

Leadership vacuum feared to undermine budget ministry's policy drive

The Lee Jae Myung administration’s ability to spearhead fiscal reform is facing a major setback, hamstrung by a leadership vacuum at the newly established Ministry of Planning and Budget, which is feared to lead to an overall delay in economic policy drives, market watchers said Monday. They say it could take at least one to two months for a new candidate to clear the National Assembly confirmation process, subsequently pushing back the government’s plan to frontload 75 percent of the state budget of over 727 trillion won ($505 billion) in the first half of this year. Central to the issue is former scandal-fraught minister nominee Lee Hye-hoon. President Lee withdrew the nomination late Sunday as allegations mounted, including workplace abuse, real estate speculation, preferential housing subscriptions and family-related advantages in education, university admissions and employment. Had the nomination been railroaded, the Lee administration would have been under constant pressure, since the compromised leadership and widespread backlash would have undermined functions of coordinatin

Shinhan hit by slew of controversies over celebrity endorsers

Shinhan Bank is facing fresh backlash over its brand campaign with actor Cha Eun-woo, who joins other top Korean celebrities hired as the company’s endorsers but who later became embroiled in high-profile scandals. Also a member of the K-pop boy band Astro, Cha allegedly evaded income taxes worth 20 billion won ($13.86 million) through a suspected shell company managed by his mother, according to the National Tax Service (NTS). The NTS has ordered Cha to pay the 20 billion won, the largest amount imposed on a Korean celebrity to date, tarnishing his image after the news circulated widely last week. The development was also damaging for Shinhan Bank, which has been focusing on brand campaigns to drive growth in the fast-evolving banking industry in the digital era. The country’s second-largest lender signed an endorsement deal with Cha in February 2025, following setbacks in campaigns with actor Kim Soo-kyun and the K-pop girl group NewJeans. The company had previously signed a contract with Kim in June 2024, leveraging his popularity from leading roles in major hit dramas such as “M

Foreign currency deposits rise for 2nd month to record high amid weak won: BOK

Foreign currency deposits in Korea rose for a second consecutive month in December, reaching an all-time high amid weakness in the local currency, central bank data showed Monday. Outstanding foreign currency-denominated deposits held by residents stood at $119.43 billion at the end of December, up $1.59 billion from a month earlier, according to the data from the Bank of Korea (BOK). The figure marked the highest level since June 2012, when the central bank began compiling relevant data. The previous record was set in August 2025, but deposits declined over the following two months before rebounding in November. Residents include Korean citizens, foreigners who have lived in the country for more than six months and foreign companies. The data excludes interbank deposits. "Companies and individuals boosted their dollar holdings amid heightened volatility in the won-dollar exchange rate around the end of last year. Funds for exporters' payment settlements and standby funds earmarked for overseas investment, in particular, flowed into foreign currency deposits," a BOK official said. Corporat

Korea to raise anti-dumping tariffs on 2 Chinese PET film firms

Korea's finance ministry said Monday it has decided to raise anti-dumping duties on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film products imported from two Chinese companies following a reexamination. Under the decision, duties on PET film products imported from Kanghui New Material Technology will be increased to 7.31 percent from the current 2.2 percent, while those from Tianjin Wanhua will be subject to 36.98 percent duties instead of the current 3.84 percent, according to the Ministry of Economy and Finance. The government has imposed anti-dumping duties on Chinese PET films since May 2023, but the ministry says imports from two suppliers have recently surged in both volume and market share. This marks the first time the government has reexamined and adjusted anti-dumping duties at the request of domestic producers since the World Trade Organization's (WTO) anti-dumping agreement was introduced in 1995, the ministry said. PET films are widely used across various industries, including packaging, electronics and energy.

Korea to hold annual consultations with Moody's on sovereign credit rating

Korea will hold its annual consultation meetings with global credit rating agency Moody's Investors Service this week, the finance ministry said Monday. The Moody's credit rating team, led by Anushka Shah, is scheduled to hold a series of meetings with the finance ministry, the unification ministry, the Bank of Korea and other relevant agencies from Tuesday through Thursday. Discussions will focus on Korea's economic conditions, trade and other external economic issues, as well as monetary and fiscal policy directions, the ministry said. Based on the annual consultation, Moody's is expected to announce Korea's sovereign credit rating within the first half of the year, it added. Moody's has maintained its credit rating on Korea at "Aa2," the third-highest level on the company's table, since 2015, with a stable rating outlook.

Crypto exchanges turn to dollar stablecoins as FX volatility grows

Cryptocurrency exchanges are stepping up marketing efforts centered on dollar-pegged stablecoins, which have seen rising demand amid a sharp increase in the won-dollar exchange rate, industry officials said Sunday. While the benchmark KOSPI, along with commodities such as gold and silver, has surged to historic levels, cryptocurrencies have been widely viewed as being left out of the rally, leaving exchanges struggling overall. Against this backdrop, the recent rise in the value of the U.S. dollar has boosted demand for stablecoins, prompting exchanges to capitalize on the trend and increase trading volumes. Korbit began waiving all trading fees for the dollar-pegged stablecoin USD Coin (USDC) last week. Issued by Circle, USDC is a stablecoin backed by the U.S. dollar, with each token designed to maintain a value of one dollar. In addition to the fee exemption, Korbit has launched a USDC trading campaign that will run through March. Users who record at least 10 million won ($6,900) in cumulative weekly USDC trading volume are eligible to share a reward pool totaling 25,000 USDC, with al
