Fed's hawkish hold strengthens case for BOK's hike in November

The U.S. Federal Reserve's hawkish decision to hold interest rates steady has strengthened the case for the Bank of Korea (BOK) to raise its benchmark rate as early as next month, as stronger-than-expected growth and persistent inflation reinforce the need for further monetary tightening, analysts said Thursday. The Fed kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 3.75 to 4 percent on Wednesday (local time), but signaled that inflation remains elevated and reaffirmed its commitment to bringing inflation back to its 2 percent target. The decision has kept markets focused on the possibility of another Fed rate hike in December, raising the prospect that the BOK could pursue further tightening before its U.S. counterpart makes its next move. The BOK held its benchmark rate at 3 percent at its rate-setting meeting last Thursday, saying it needed more time to assess domestic and external economic conditions and the effects of two previous rate hikes. Recent economic data have strengthened the case for further tightening. Korea's real gross domestic product grew 1 percent in the third quarter

Activist funds ramp up pressure on listed firms ahead of March shareholder meetings

A growing number of activist funds are seeking to launch a coordinated campaign to strengthen shareholder returns in the areas of boardroom decision-making, capital allocation policies and executive pay structures, market watchers said Sunday. The collective move comes ahead of next month's upcoming shareholder meetings where corporate governance is set to emerge as a major minority shareholder rights issue. Together with the ongoing revision to the Commercial Act — characterized by strengthened corporate governance and enhanced shareholder rights — many say shareholder activism will take center stage in the coming weeks, led by not only domestic activist funds but also foreign hedge funds. According to the financial investment industry, two domestic funds — Align Partners Capital Management and Truston Asset Management — and the U.K.-based Palliser Capital are calling for greater shareholder returns. Align Partners has pressed for what it calls “normalization” of shareholder returns at DB Insurance, a non-life insurer, and APlus Asset Advisor, a non-life and life insurance s

InterviewKosdaq 3,000 harder than KOSPI 5,000: Morgan Stanley

HONG KONG — With the Korean government reaching its ambitious KOSPI 5,000 goal faster than expected, attention is shifting to the secondary Kosdaq market — a bourse aimed at nurturing innovative, tech-heavy companies, similar to the Nasdaq. Since the announcement of the Kosdaq 3,000 initiative on Jan. 22, the index has continued to climb, reflecting strong investor enthusiasm. However, Morgan Stanley’s Korea equity strategist and head of financials research, Joon Seok, warned the target may be more difficult to achieve. "The structure and dynamics of the Kosdaq market are quite different from those of the KOSPI," Seok said. "This is a more challenging target (than KOSPI) but taking the first step is key." Seok noted that the Kosdaq’s growth-oriented nature leads to greater volatility, driven largely by the short-term trading behavior of retail investors, who account for 80 percent to 90 percent of total trading volume. In addition, Kosdaq-listed firms tend to have weaker fundamentals and lower transparency than their KOSPI counterparts. The return on equity (ROE) — a key measur

Nextrade, Korea Exchange consortia win nod for STO platforms

The Financial Services Commission (FSC) has named two consortia — the KDX consortium led by the Korea Exchange and the NXT consortium led by alternative trading platform Nextrade — as operators of new over-the-counter trading platforms for fractional investment, officials said Friday. Lucentblock, a startup operating a fractional real estate investment platform that had drawn attention after alleging procedural unfairness and misappropriation of technology, was eliminated after receiving the lowest marks, including in equity capital. Mindful of the controversy surrounding Lucentblock’s claims, the FSC disclosed detailed scoring results in an unusual move, saying it had applied startup-friendly criteria and that Lucentblock fell short in several areas, including its business proposal. Regarding the complaint Lucentblock filed with the Fair Trade Commission (FTC) over alleged technology theft by Nextrade, the FSC effectively left the matter to the antitrust watchdog, stipulating that the final licensing review would be suspended if the FTC formally launches an administrative probe. KOSPI snaps 4-day winning streak despite briefly touching new high

Korean stocks closed lower Friday, snapping a four-day winning streak despite briefly touching a fresh high during midday trading as investors braced for a five-day closure of the market for the Lunar New Year holiday. The local currency fell against the U.S. dollar. The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) lost 15.26 points, or 0.28 percent, to end at 5,507.01, after reaching a record high of over 5,580 during intraday trading. Trade volume was heavy at 1.28 billion shares worth 30.3 trillion won ($21 billion), with losers outnumbering winners 545 to 336. Foreigners sold a net 974.1 billion won worth of local shares, offsetting 708.4 billion won and 82.4 billion won net purchases by retail investors and institutions, respectively. Overnight, major U.S. indexes lost ground on concerns related to the potential impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on various industries, such as software. "Investors moved to take profit following a bullish run this week ahead of next week's extended market holiday in Korea," Han Ji-young, a researcher at Kiwoom Securities, said, noting that

Bithumb license renewal faces prolonged delay amid bitcoin misallocation scandal

Bithumb’s license renewal is likely to face a prolonged delay after the cryptocurrency exchange mistakenly distributed 620,000 so-called “ghost” bitcoins, triggering regulatory scrutiny, according to financial authorities and industry officials Friday. Under the Act on Reporting and Use of Certain Financial Transaction Information, virtual asset service providers are required to renew their registration every three years. The country’s second-largest coin exchange has remained in provisional operating status since its license expired in December 2024. The firm applied for a renewal of its business registration in October 2024, and the review process is still underway. Financial authorities had aimed to conclude Bithumb’s renewal review within the first half of this year. That timeline, however, has been thrown into doubt following the recent bitcoin misallocation incident. On Feb. 6, the exchange attempted to distribute bitcoin worth 2,000 won ($1.40) to participating users as part of a promotional event, but an employee mistakenly entered 2,000 BTC, leading to the erroneous tr

NPS to be game changer in Korean FX market in 2026: Morgan Stanley

HONG KONG — Korea’s National Pension Service (NPS) is poised to become the most influential factor in the country’s foreign exchange market this year, potentially acting as a “game changer” in boosting the won, according to Morgan Stanley. Two major policy shifts are expected from the state-run fund, focused on its foreign exchange hedging ratio and asset allocation strategy, said Kathleen Oh, the investment bank’s chief economist for Korea and Taiwan. The NPS has maintained a 0 percent hedging ratio, leaving its assets fully exposed to currency fluctuations. At the same time, its allocation to overseas investments has steadily increased. As of November 2025, overseas assets made up 59.6 percent of its total assets under management (AUM) of 1,438 trillion won ($997.4 billion). "We do think the changes could be announced earlier than May this year, which is the usual timing of the announcement of the allocation, and the adjustments to hedging strategy could be possible," Oh said in a recent interview with The Korea Times, adding that a clearer picture will emerge with the app

BOK floats $3.29 bil. worth of fresh bills ahead of extended Lunar New Year holiday

The central bank said Friday it has supplied a net 4.76 trillion won ($3.29 billion) worth of fresh banknotes for this year's Lunar New Year holiday. The Bank of Korea (BOK) said it issued 5.03 trillion won in currency to banks and other financial institutions during the 10 business days through Friday and withdrew 273.5 billion won, bringing the net supply to 4.76 trillion won. The net issuance marked a 6.2 percent decrease from the amount supplied during the same period ahead of last year's holiday, it added. "The decline was attributable to the Lunar New Year holiday period shortening from six days last year to five days this year, while year-end and early-year currency demand was separated from holiday-related cash demand this year," a BOK official said. This year's Lunar New Year falls on Tuesday, with the holiday running through Wednesday. Demand for fresh bills typically rises during the holiday season, as it is customary in South Korea for elders to give cash gifts to younger family members after receiving traditional New Year's bows.

Financial markets little affected by crypto volatility following Bithumb incident: officials

Top Korean financial authorities said Friday that recent cryptocurrency volatility is unlikely to spill over into broader financial markets, pledging to strengthen oversight to prevent market anxiety. The remarks came after an internal transfer error last week at Bithumb, one of the country's largest crypto exchanges, which triggered a brief but sharp drop in digital asset prices. "The recent increased volatility in cryptocurrency prices is unlikely to be directly transmitted to financial markets," the finance ministry said, citing assessments made during a meeting chaired by Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol to address rising financial market volatility. The meeting was also attended by Bank of Korea Gov. Rhee Chang-yong and the heads of the Financial Services Commission and the Financial Supervisory Service. The meeting participants said the government will review internal controls across cryptocurrency exchanges to ensure market anxiety does not escalate, according to the ministry. On Feb. 6, the cryptocurrency exchange mistakenly transferred 620,000 bitcoins to 249 users participating i

Economic recovery continues despite uncertainties: finance ministry

Korea's economy continues to be on the path to recovery, supported by stronger domestic demand and a solid performance in the semiconductor sector, despite ongoing uncertainties, the finance ministry said Friday. The Ministry of Economy and Finance made the assessment in its monthly economic report, known as the Green Book, marking the fifth consecutive month it has used the term "recovery" to describe the economic situation. "Recently, our economy has continued its recovery trend, driven by improved domestic demand, including consumption, and strong exports led by semiconductors," the report said. Still, uncertainties remain, the ministry noted, citing ongoing employment difficulties in vulnerable sectors, such as construction. The report also cited the continued impact of U.S. tariff measures and other external risks as sources of concern. "The global economy faces ongoing volatility in international financial markets and energy prices, along with slowed trade and growth, due to worsening trade conditions from tariffs by major countries and geopolitical uncertainties," the report said. Korea launches committee for preliminary review of US investment projects

Korea launched a government committee Friday to begin a preliminary review of potential investment projects in the United States as part of a trade deal between the two countries, the industry ministry said. The Korea-U.S. strategic investment memorandum of understanding (MOU) implementation committee held its inaugural meeting to explore potential projects, as the National Assembly also seeks to legislate a special bill to support possible investments, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources. The committee will serve as the "single window" overseeing investment consultations with the U.S. and assessing the commercial rationality and economic value of potential projects, the ministry explained. "Through investment projects in the U.S., the government will create opportunities for Korean companies to secure strong references in the U.S. market and expand exports of equipment and materials," Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan said in his opening remarks. "We will also work to secure advanced strategic assets overseas and generate opportunities to combine Korea's manufacturi
