GE Aerospace turns to Korea to shore up volatile supply chain

A senior delegation from GE Aerospace arrived in Korea this week, signaling a renewed push to deepen ties with local suppliers as global aviation and defense supply chains undergo rapid change. The state-run Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) said it hosted “KOTRA x GE Aerospace Day” earlier this week at the JW Marriott Hotel Seoul, bringing together 23 Korean aerospace and defense firms for briefings and one-on-one export consultations. The visit comes as the industry pivots toward unmanned systems and integrated manned-unmanned operations, with software-driven capabilities — including artificial intelligence (AI)-based mission systems and modular architectures — emerging as critical competitive edges. During a morning session, GE Aerospace outlined demand across key areas, including avionics, power systems, engines, additive manufacturing and aerospace communication technologies. In the afternoon, nine prescreened Korean firms took part in targeted business meetings following technical evaluations. KOTRA said it plans to build a structured cooperation pipeline with

AI talks double as diplomacy at global tech show in Seoul

The Ministry of Science and ICT convened industry leaders and foreign diplomats at Coex in southern Seoul, Wednesday, using the World IT Show 2026 as a platform to promote its ambitions in artificial intelligence (AI). At a morning roundtable, the ministry gathered executives and researchers to discuss so-called “physical AI” — systems that integrate AI with machines and real-world environments. The session, led by Second Vice Minister Ryu Je-myung, focused on how Korea could strengthen its position despite competition from global technology giants. Participants from companies including Maum AI, Movensys, MakinaRocks and Pebblous, alongside academic experts, pointed to gaps in technology, data and industrial deployment, while outlining paths forward. Ryu argued that Korea’s advanced manufacturing base could give it an edge. He said the government would back the sector by securing key technologies, expanding data infrastructure and supporting large-scale pilot projects. In the afternoon, the ministry shifted to outreach, hosting diplomats from 56 countries — the largest such gat

Korea Eximbank steps forward as key financial backer for Vietnam's nuclear power projects

The Export-Import Bank of Korea (Korea Eximbank) is stepping forward as a key financial backer to support Vietnam’s energy transition and help accelerate the global expansion of Korea’s nuclear power industry, the bank said Thursday. The state-run lender signed a four-way memorandum of understanding (MOU) in Hanoi with the Korea Trade Insurance Corp., Korea Electric Power Corp. and Vietnam National Industry-Energy Group (PVN) to strengthen cooperation on financing nuclear power projects in the Southeast Asian nation. PVN, also known as Petrovietnam, is Vietnam’s state-owned energy conglomerate, overseeing projects spanning oil and gas, renewable energy and nuclear power. The agreement comes eight months after the two countries reaffirmed their commitment to nuclear cooperation at a bilateral summit in August 2025, held during Vietnamese leader To Lam’s state visit to Korea. The signing ceremony was attended by Hwang Ki-yeon, chairman and CEO of Korea Eximbank, and Le Ngoc Son, chairman of PVN, in the presence of President Lee Jae Myung and his Vietnamese counterpart. Hyundai Motor’s earnings marred by tariff impact

Hyundai Motor reported a double-digit decline in operating profit for the first quarter of the year, as U.S.-imposed tariffs on imported vehicles continued to weigh on the Korean automaker's earnings, the company said in a regulatory filing Thursday. The carmaker's sales rose 3.4 percent to 45.94 trillion won ($31 billion) between January and March, compared to the same quarter last year, thanks to an increase in prices. Its operating profit, however, fell 30.8 percent to 2.51 trillion won during the same period, putting sustained pressure on the firm’s profitability. The U.S. began imposing a 25 percent tariff on Korean automobile imports in April last year, before lowering the rate to 15 percent in November. U.S.-imposed tariffs caused the carmaker an estimated 860 billion won in losses in the first quarter. The carmaker sold 976,219 vehicles in the first quarter, down 2.5 percent from a year earlier, hit by sluggish demand from major markets. Hyundai Motor said they expect unfavorable business conditions to persist in upcoming quarters as competition in emerging markets intensifies

Matchmaking firm Duo fined $810,000 over data leak

The data protection regulator said Thursday it has fined leading matchmaking company Duo more than 1.2 billion won ($810,000) over a data leak involving the personal information of nearly 430,000 members. The leaked information included IDs, passwords, names, birth dates and addresses, as well as members' heights, weights, religion, previous marriage experience and other family and professional details, according to the Personal Information Protection Commission. The breach occurred in January last year when an employee's work computer was hacked, but the company had failed to notify authorities for three days without justification, the commission said. Under the law, businesses and other entities in South Korea are required to notify authorities of possible data leaks immediately after they become aware. The company was also found to have violated its responsibility to implement data protection measures, such as by not restricting access to its database in the event of multiple failed entry attempts. The regulator said it imposed a penalty of 1.2 billion won on the company, as well as a
