Hyosung launches hyperscale AI data center in Seoul

Hyosung Group is expanding its push into artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure with the launch of a hyperscale data center in Seoul, marking its entry into Korea’s fast-growing data center market. The company announced Wednesday that Hyosung-STT GDC, a joint venture between Hyosung Heavy Industries and Singapore-based operator ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC), opened STT Seoul 1, a 30-megawatt data center, in Geumcheon District, Seoul, the previous day. Designed to support cloud and AI workloads, the new facility combines Hyosung’s power infrastructure expertise with STT GDC's global standards in data center design, operation and service management. The facility is capable of accommodating increasingly power-intensive and high-density computing environments driven by generative AI applications. The company explained that one of the center's biggest advantages is its location in Seoul, where securing large-scale power capacity has become increasingly difficult due to energy regulations and grid constraints, providing low-latency connectivity to major business districts

AMCHAM, San Francisco agree to boost Korea-US economic ties

The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the City of San Francisco Wednesday to strengthen economic ties between Korea and the United States through cooperation with the U.S. city in connecting businesses, encouraging investment and seeking collaboration across various industries. The signing ceremony was held during San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie’s visit to Seoul to mark the 50th anniversary of the sister-city relationship. Following the ceremony, a roundtable discussion took place to exchange views on potential areas of collaboration and explore ways to further strengthen Korea-U.S. economic and industrial ties. “This MOU represents a significant milestone in strengthening the economic bridge between Korea and San Francisco,” AMCHAM Chairman James Kim said. “San Francisco has long stood at the forefront of innovation, entrepreneurship and global exchange, and we see tremendous opportunities to deepen collaboration across technology, artificial intelligence, culture and investment. We look forward to leveraging this par

SK hynix breaks ground for new packaging fab in Cheongju

SK hynix on Wednesday broke ground for its P&T7 plant in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, a new facility for packaging artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors into finished products and conducting final quality testing. The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by SK hynix Chief Production Officer Lee Byung-gi and 125 employees, as well as officials from the fab’s builder, SK Ecoplant. P&T7 is a fab dedicated to advanced packaging for manufacturing AI-specific memory chips such as high-bandwidth memory (HBM). The memory giant invested 19 trillion won ($12.88 billion) to build the facility in an industrial complex in the city, covering about 230,000 square meters. The fab will house 150,000 square meters of clean rooms, including 60,000 square meters dedicated to wafer-level packaging lines and 90,000 square meters for wafer testing lines. Wafer-level packaging is an advanced process that completes packaging at the wafer level, unlike conventional methods that first dice wafers into individual chips before packaging. SK hynix plans to complete the wafer testing lines by October n

Hanwha Life's global portfolio strengthens as overseas earnings climb

Hanwha Life Insurance delivered a breakout year for its overseas business in 2025, underscoring the growing strength of its diversified global financial portfolio, company officials said Wednesday. In addition to insurance-led earnings from Vietnam and Indonesia, the company has broadened its footprint through newly acquired businesses — U.S. brokerage Velocity Clearing and Indonesia’s Nobu Bank — adding fresh profit streams to the mix. The shift is visible in the numbers. Combined net profit from these operations reached 117.7 billion won ($79.6 million), up 172 percent from 2024. Overseas businesses accounted for 14 percent of Hanwha Life’s total consolidated net profit. Much of that momentum came from newly added businesses. Hanwha Life US Investment, which acquired Velocity Clearing, posted 47 billion won in consolidated net profit last year. The New York-based firm specializes in post-trade services, including clearing and settlement — behind-the-scenes processes that ensure trades are finalized and assets and funds are exchanged as agreed. Major banks are stepping up celebrity-driven campaigns to attract younger customers, with their combined advertising spending surpassing 800 billion won ($541 million) for the first time last year, industry and financial officials said Wednesday. According to data from the Financial Supervisory Service, the five major lenders — KB Kookmin, Shinhan, Hana, Woori and NH NongHyup — together spent 813.6 billion won on advertising and promotional activities in 2025. Their marketing budgets have shown a steady upward trend over the past five years, climbing from 551.3 billion won in 2021 to 755.2 billion won in 2022, dipping slightly to 737.9 billion won in 2023 and then rising again to 781.4 billion won in 2024. Over the 2021-2025 period, their cumulative spending reached about 3.6 trillion won. Hana Bank topped the list, allocating about 177.8 billion won to advertising last year and maintaining its No. 1 position for the fourth consecutive year since 2022, with a lineup of high-profile endorsers including trot star Lim Young-woong, IVE member Ahn Yu-jin and former Tottenham Hotspur play

Defense firms form united front against Hanwha's dominance

The rapid growth of Hanwha Group's presence across sea, air and land defense systems is prompting local rivals to step up efforts to join forces and counter the conglomerate's dominance. During the Sea-Air-Space (SAS) 2026 defense expo in the United States from Sunday to Wednesday, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and LIG Defense & Aerospace (D&A) opened a joint exhibition booth. They also operated a joint booth with Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) at the World Defense Show 2026 in Saudi Arabia in February. The moves were widely seen as an effort to draw attention away from Hanwha, whose three defense units — Hanwha Aerospace, Hanwha Ocean and Hanwha Systems — operated joint booths at both events. "Unlike other Korean companies at SAS 2026 that shared a joint exhibition booth, Hanwha was the only Korean firm to operate a large standalone booth, drawing strong interest from visitors," Hanwha Ocean said in a press release Wednesday. HD HHI, LIG D&A and KAI also left out Hanwha in 2023, when they signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in developing next-generation warship

Hanwha expands foothold in Canada through partnership with Alberta

In a move showing Korea’s deepening industrial ambitions in North America, Hanwha Group signed a comprehensive memorandum of understanding with the government of Alberta in Canada, bridging sectors from energy infrastructure to high-stakes defense procurement. The agreement, formalized in Edmonton, brings together one of Korea’s largest conglomerates and the leadership of Canada’s energy heartland, including Premier of Alberta Danielle Smith and Minister of Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration Joseph Schow. Led by Hanwha Energy CEO Lee Jae-kyu, the Korean delegation laid out a road map for a long-term industrial anchor in the Canadian province involving key affiliates such as Hanwha Ocean, Hanwha Aerospace, and Hanwha Power. While the partnership emphasizes a shared interest in the low-carbon energy transition — specifically targeting liquefied natural gas, hydrogen, and carbon capture and storage — the geopolitical undercurrents are equally significant. The deal arrives as Hanwha Ocean aggressively presses to bid for the Royal Canadian Navy’s multibillion-dollar submarine

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries said Wednesday it has secured a contract to build a dedicated icebreaker for the Swedish Maritime Administration, marking the first time a Korean shipyard has won an overseas order for a purpose-built icebreaker. The contract, valued at $348.9 million, covers the construction of one vessel, with delivery scheduled for 2029.
