Hyosung launches hyperscale AI data center in Seoul

Hyosung Group is expanding its push into artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure with the launch of a hyperscale data center in Seoul, marking its entry into Korea’s fast-growing data center market. The company announced Wednesday that Hyosung-STT GDC, a joint venture between Hyosung Heavy Industries and Singapore-based operator ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC), opened STT Seoul 1, a 30-megawatt data center, in Geumcheon District, Seoul, the previous day. Designed to support cloud and AI workloads, the new facility combines Hyosung’s power infrastructure expertise with STT GDC's global standards in data center design, operation and service management. The facility is capable of accommodating increasingly power-intensive and high-density computing environments driven by generative AI applications. The company explained that one of the center's biggest advantages is its location in Seoul, where securing large-scale power capacity has become increasingly difficult due to energy regulations and grid constraints, providing low-latency connectivity to major business districts

Gov't to designate 10 cities to serve as startup hubs by 2027 to promote balanced growth

The government will designate 10 cities to serve as major hubs for startup ecosystems by next year in a bid to promote balanced regional growth and create more jobs for young people, the finance ministry said Friday. It will first designate four cities that house the country's major science institutes — Daejeon, Daegu, Gwangju and UIsan — as startup hubs this year, and name six more cities outside of the greater Seoul area with such potential next year, according to the Ministry of Finance and Economy. The initiative was announced at a meeting on the economy and strategy on boosting startup ecosystem. The ministry said the initiative aims to help promote balanced regional growth as the country's startup infrastructure is mainly focused in Seoul, while other regions are suffering an outflow of population due to the lack of industrial infrastructure. Korea ranks No. 20 across the world in terms of startup ecosystem competitiveness, with massive investment in research and development (R&D) projects and active patent applications, but only has three cities listed in top 500 startup citi

Honda Korea to withdraw from auto business

Honda Korea has decided to close its automobile business here by the end of this year due to the carmaker’s steeply falling sales and belated electrification efforts, the company said Thursday in a press conference. The Japanese automaker said the latest decision reflects its strategic shift to optimize its business structure and focus more on core growth areas. “We sincerely appreciate the support we have received from our customers, dealers and parners who have shown great interest in Honda automobiles,” Honda Korea CEO Lee Ji-hong told reporters during the press conference. Honda Korea sold a total of 1,951 vehicles in 2025, down 22 percent from the previous year. The carmaker enjoyed a heyday in the mid-2000s, with the automaker achieving annual sales of 10,000 vehicles for the first time in 2008, based on strong demand for its flagship Accord sedan and the CR-V SUV. The company first started selling cars in Korea in 2004. “Considering changes in the market environment, such as the fluctuating exchange rate, Honda Korea decided to concentrate our resources on key areas to sec

Vice minister calls for steel industry's cooperation for supply chain stabilization amid Mideast crisis

Vice Industry Minister Moon Shin-hak on Thursday called on the steel industry to join the country's efforts to stabilize supply chains of key industrial materials amid the Middle East crisis, Moon's office said. Moon made the request during a meeting with officials from major steel companies, including POSCO Group, Hyundai Steel and Dongguk Steel Mill. The gathering was held to check supplies of steel, a key industrial material widely used across various industries, amid persisting conflict in the Middle East, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources. In the meeting, the Korea Iron & Steel Association said the industry is experiencing limited impact from the war between the United States and Iran as it has low dependence on Middle Eastern imports and supply chains, but it is facing higher energy and shipping costs. Despite a relatively stable supply status, Moon asked the steelmakers to stay vigilant and make efforts to prevent any supply chain disruptions, as such a situation could have ripple effects across different industries. The vice minister also pledged the gove

Samsung Electronics labor unions vow no retreat in wage talks

Samsung Electronics labor unions staged a mass rally on Thursday, stepping up pressure on management with the threat of a full‑scale strike next month amid the critical industry upturn for the memory chipmaker. A joint labor alliance of three of the company’s major unions — Samsung Electronics Labor Union (SELU), National Samsung Electronics Union (NSEU) and Samsung Electronics Co. Union (SECU) — held a rally at the company’s main semiconductor production campus in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province. The alliance claimed the rally drew out approximately 40,000 members, while police estimated 30,000. The coalition has been demanding the company to remove the cap on performance‑based bonuses with more transparent calculation criteria and allocate 15 percent of annual operating profit to such payouts. Among the unions, SELU recently became Samsung’s first majority union with about 74,000 members and won a legal recognition as the representative of its workers. “The company has warned of crisis every year and, even now as it eyes the global leader (in the industry), it tells us n

Nespresso explores flavor with new one-touch capsule coffeemaker

Nespresso Korea unveiled its new marketing campaign aimed at the thriving capsule coffee market here on Thursday with the introduction of its new Vertuo Up coffeemaker. The Korean subsidiary launched a new brand campaign asserting coffee is more than a simple beverage but rather something to explore based on personal desire — exploration enabled by the Vertuo Up's one-touch function that preheats in just three seconds. The new campaign is in response to Korea’s evolving coffee culture, driven by consumers in their 20s and 30s who enjoy trying new drinks, especially iced varieties. “Coffee drinks that had remained below the radar in the past are now gaining rare retrospective attention from these young consumers. Sales of flavored and decaffeinated coffees have jumped over 40 percent since 2023. Those aged 20 to 34 nowadays drink at least two cups of coffee every day and 88 percent of them choose iced coffees,” Nespresso Korea CEO Park Sung-Yong said during the company's press conference in Seoul’s Seongsu area. “In our recent survey, 56 percent of respondents aged 25 to 34 sa
