Hyosung launches hyperscale AI data center in Seoul

Hyosung Group is expanding its push into artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure with the launch of a hyperscale data center in Seoul, marking its entry into Korea’s fast-growing data center market. The company announced Wednesday that Hyosung-STT GDC, a joint venture between Hyosung Heavy Industries and Singapore-based operator ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC), opened STT Seoul 1, a 30-megawatt data center, in Geumcheon District, Seoul, the previous day. Designed to support cloud and AI workloads, the new facility combines Hyosung’s power infrastructure expertise with STT GDC's global standards in data center design, operation and service management. The facility is capable of accommodating increasingly power-intensive and high-density computing environments driven by generative AI applications. The company explained that one of the center's biggest advantages is its location in Seoul, where securing large-scale power capacity has become increasingly difficult due to energy regulations and grid constraints, providing low-latency connectivity to major business districts

Japan’s arms export shift set to intensify naval shipbuilding rivalry with Korea

Japan’s decision to lift decadeslong restrictions on arms exports is expected to intensify competition with Korea, particularly in the global naval shipbuilding industry, experts and industry officials said Monday. The move marks a significant policy shift, coming more than six decades after Tokyo imposed strict limits on overseas weapons sales following its World War II defeat in 1945. Defense experts said Japanese shipbuilders are poised to emerge as formidable contenders against Korean counterparts such as HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hanwha Ocean, both of which must brace for tougher competition in overseas naval contracts. “In Southeast Asia, Japan is widely regarded as a more reliable partner than Korea due to the former’s long-standing engagement through official development assistance, which could translate into stronger naval export opportunities,” said Yang Uk, a research fellow at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies. Yang added that Japan’s recent successful bid for Australia’s next-generation multirole frigate program underscores its enduring competitiveness

Banks’ profit growth slows despite record earnings at financial groups

Profit growth at major Korean banks has stalled even as their parent financial groups posted record first-quarter earnings, industry data showed Monday. The combined net profit of the country's five largest financial groups — KB Financial Group, Shinhan Financial Group, Hana Financial Group, Woori Financial Group and NH Financial Group — reached about 6.2 trillion won ($4.2 billion) in the January-March period, up 9.8 percent from 5.6 trillion won a year earlier. It marks the first time their combined quarterly net profit has exceeded 6 trillion won. The growth was largely driven by nonbank units, particularly securities arms, which benefited from a stock market rally. Banking units saw weaker earnings, with several lenders posting declines. Woori Bank reported a net profit of 522 billion won in the first quarter, down 17.8 percent from a year earlier. NH NongHyup Bank posted a net profit of 557.7 billion won, up just 0.6 percent year-on-year, largely flat. State-run policy lender Industrial Bank of Korea also saw its net profit fall 12.4 percent to 666.3 billion won. Woori attributed i

Korea diversifies exports to Vietnam to meat, fruit, K-food ingredients

Korea will expand exports to Vietnam to include the country’s entire meat market, a step up from Cheong Wa Dae’s announcement last week that the two nations had reached a quarantine agreement for Korean poultry exports to the Southeast Asian economy. In addition to meat products, Korean Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Minister Song Mi-ryung said Monday that bilateral trade will accelerate further by trading more fruit and exporting Korean food items to companies in Vietnam that operate canteens. Song said the Korean government is currently negotiating with Vietnam over Korean exports of heat-treated pork, hanwoo (Korean beef), duck and lamb. All of them have reached their third stage of discussion, she added. The minister said 13 Korean firms including Lotte, Maniker and NongHyup Moguchon have shown interest in expanding their global markets to Vietnam, as discussions continue to work toward new memorandums of understanding (MOUs). “The Vietnamese meat market is incredibly huge. Some of the Korean firms said mixing poultry and pork together produces better flavors. If the ongoi

PHOTO Introducing soju drinking culture to foreigners

Soju artist Kim Wan-jun, right, also known as Funnyjun, pours soju for a participant during his soju drinking culture class at Inspire Entertainment Resort in Incheon, April 18. He said soju — now the world’s best-selling distilled spirit and a staple in K-content — has become more than just a drink, but a tool for sharing stories, prompting growing demand to teach foreigners proper etiquette for enjoying it together. The program was part of the resort’s campaign to introduce Korean culture to visitors, one that includes the Aurora Night Market, a Saturday K-food festival recreating a retro Korean alley of street vendors. GS E&C cements data center, smart city plots in Vietnam

Major engineering company GS E&C has secured footholds for expanding its data center and smart city projects in Vietnam on the back of President Lee Jae Myung’s state visit to the country last week. The construction arm of GS Group on Wednesday met representatives of FPT Corp., the largest private IT company in Vietnam and the country’s data center market leader by volume. The meeting in Hanoi brought together GS E&C President and CEO Huh Yoon-hong and FPT CEO Nguyen Van Khoa. The two signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on data center development and smart city construction in Vietnam. Drawing on the Korean firm’s more than 20 years of experience in the data center business, the companies agreed to cooperate to support Vietnam’s digital economy growth and nationwide digital transformation. GS E&C said the data centers will be built in key regions across Vietnam with an initial capacity of tens of megawatts each. The facilities’ efficiency will be secured through modular construction. Finance minister stresses big-small biz cooperation in bio sector

Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol on Monday emphasized cooperation between large corporations and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the bio sector, calling for a mutually beneficial industrial ecosystem. "A cooperative ecosystem is essential for achieving sustainable growth when large companies lead the global market, while SMEs and startups provide support," Koo was quoted by the ministry as saying during a meeting with raw biomaterial manufacturing companies. He added that in a period of industrial transformation driven by technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), organic collaboration is becoming increasingly important to ensure shared growth. Regarding the bio and beauty industries, Koo urged companies not to become complacent with existing products and brands. "Companies must continuously enhance research and development investment and product safety standards in an environment where technology, trends and consumer expectations are rapidly evolving," the policymaker said.

Retail investors split over Samsung, SK hynix as KOSPI hits record high

Park, an office worker in his 30s living in Seoul, has been agonizing for days over whether to sell part of his holdings in SK hynix. Although his returns have surged as the stock has rallied, expectations for further gains driven by artificial intelligence (AI) demand remain strong. “If I sell now, I can lock in profits, but if it rises further, I’ll feel like I missed out. I keep wondering whether this is the peak, given how much it has already gone up,” Park said. Another office worker in his mid-40s living in Gyeonggi Province, surnamed Jung, faces a similar dilemma. He recently sold part of his holdings in Samsung Electronics, judging that the stock had already risen enough. However, he remains conflicted about the shares he still holds. “I couldn’t bring myself to sell everything in case it keeps going up,” he said. KOSPI’s sharp and rapid rally in recent days, even amid Middle East-related uncertainties, is leaving more than 5.38 million retail investors in Samsung Electronics and SK hynix weighing a difficult choice: whether to hold on for further upside or cash out

CJ CheilJedang is stepping up its push to expand its K‑food footprint in Vietnam, deepening its partnership with the country’s leading retailer, Bach Hoa XANH. SK Telecom extends 29-year run atop customer satisfaction index

SK Telecom, Korea’s largest wireless carrier, secured the top position in the mobile phone service category of the 2026 National Customer Satisfaction Index, extending an industry-leading streak that now spans nearly three decades. The achievement, announced Monday, marks the 29th consecutive year the company has led the rankings. SK Telecom remains the only enterprise across all domestic industries to have held the top position every year since the index was introduced in 1998. The survey, conducted by the Korea Productivity Center, in partnership with the University of Michigan, is a primary benchmark for consumer sentiment, relying on direct user evaluations to quantify satisfaction levels across more than 30 countries. Analysts and company officials attribute the sustained performance to a strategic pivot toward artificial intelligence (AI)-centered telecommunications and a localized effort to restore consumer confidence following a high-profile cyber intrusion incident in 2025. In the wake of that breach, the carrier implemented a series of network security upgrades and customer
