Weak won, K-beauty fuel Chinese shopping trips, spending in Korea

When Chelsea Wang travelled to Seoul with two friends in late April, they barely visited any of the city's palaces or tourist attractions. Instead, their three-and-a-half-day itinerary revolved around duty-free shopping, beauty treatments, hair salons and cosmetics stores. Wang arrived with a shopping list of her own: a backpack she estimated would cost at least 500 yuan ($70) less than in China, and a bottle of perfume at a similar discount. One of her friends, Wu, a 28-year-old white-collar worker from China who was preparing for marriage, had an even bigger purchase planned. After comparing prices, she bought a Chaumet wedding ring at Lotte Duty Free in Seoul's Myeong-dong neighborhood for about 37,000 yuan after discounts, tax refunds and favourable exchange rates were figured in — roughly 11,000 yuan less than she would have paid in China. "It was really quite a good deal," Wu said. Their purchases came as the Korean won has remained weak against major currencies over the past year. One yuan was worth an average of about 226 won in June, compared with around 209 won in January, acc

Genesis forges expanded marketing partnership with PGA Tour

Genesis, the independent luxury brand of Korea's Hyundai Motor Group, said Thursday it has entered into an expanded global marketing partnership with the PGA Tour through 2030. The multiyear agreement names Genesis as the first-ever global official vehicle company for both the PGA Tour and PGA Tour Champions, while also designating the company as the official mobility partner of the PGA Tour. As part of the partnership, Genesis becomes the inaugural sponsor of the PGA Tour's World Feed, launched earlier this year to provide exclusive content to international golf audiences. In addition, Genesis will be featured prominently through year-round digital content at select tournaments. To commemorate the new partnership, the PGA Tour and Genesis will debut a special television program named "Driven," ahead of the third round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic on U.S. television network CBS on Saturday (local time). "Genesis is honored to become the first-ever global official vehicle sponsor of the PGA Tour. This milestone reflects the deep trust and shared vision between our two organizations, buil

Czech court rejects EDF complaint over nuclear tender

A Czech court rejected Wednesday a complaint filed by French energy group EDF over a tender it lost to build two additional reactors at a Czech nuclear plant. Even if the court had ruled in EDF's favour it would not have affected the multi-billion-dollar reactor deal signed earlier this month by Prague and South Korea's KHNP, which had beaten EDF in the tender last year. However, such a ruling would have allowed EDF to seek compensation. "The complaint has been rejected," Klara Belkovova, a spokeswoman for the Regional Court in the city of Brno, told AFP. She added EDF now had eight days to file an appeal with the Supreme Administrative Court to contest the verdict. In the rejected complaint, EDF questioned the transparency of the tender. The Brno court already delayed the signing of the record nuclear deal with a pre-emptive ruling in May, following EDF's complaint. But a higher court dismissed that verdict on June 4 and the Czech government and KHNP signed the deal. The contract is crucial for the Czech Republic, an EU member of 10.9 million people, which relies on nuclear power from the D

Korea secures extended exploration rights in Vietnam's major oil block

The state-run Korea National Oil Corp. (KNOC) said Wednesday it has secured fresh exploration rights in Vietnam's second-largest oil field to continue its operations there until 2050. KNOC and its Korean partners, including SK earthon, signed an agreement last week with Vietnam's national oil company, Petrovietnam, for the exploration rights, according to the Korean company. Under the agreement, KNOC acquired an 11.4 percent stake in the 15-1 oil block, which generates approximately 34,000 barrels of oil on a daily average, to continue its development in the area through September 2050. The agreement was signed to renew KNOC's exploration rights in the cited oil field ahead of the expiration of the existing concession in September. KNOC has already been exploring the 15-1 block for more than 20 years after successfully completing exploration in 2000 and beginning oil production there in 2003. The Korean company has produced some 430 million barrels of oil from the field as of 2024, raising $1.4 billion in cumulative profit, according to its officials. KNOC and its partners plan to invest $

Starbucks brings back ‘eco-friendly’ plastic straws

Starbucks has reintroduced plastic straws made from plant-based materials at about 200 stores nationwide as part of a pilot program, responding to customer complaints about paper straws. Starting Wednesday, Starbucks Korea began offering both paper and plastic straws at select locations, mainly near hospitals and residential areas, frequented by patients, young children and the elderly, according to the Korean branch of the Seattle-based coffee company. “Reflecting various customer opinions that patients and young children find paper straws inconvenient, we are first introducing plant-based plastic straws on a trial basis at about 200 stores,” a Starbucks Korea official said. Starbucks Korea originally adopted paper straws in 2018 to reduce plastic waste and protect the environment. However, many customers complained about the sogginess and unpleasant taste associated with paper straws. The newly introduced plastic straws are made from sugarcane-based materials instead of conventional petroleum-based plastics and are expected to help reduce carbon emissions, the company said. SK suspends controversial IPO of lubricant unit in line with president's shareholder-friendly policy

SK Group decided to temporarily suspend its plan to spin off SK Enmove, its lubricant-manufacturing unit, from SK Innovation and make it a publicly traded company, Wednesday, as the move is feared to clash with President Lee Jae Myung’s policy to protect retail investors. In a press release, SK Innovation said it will temporarily halt the initial public offering (IPO) process of SK Enmove "in light of recent capital market conditions and various internal circumstances." A key group affiliate in petroleum and other energy resources, SK Innovation holds a 70 percent stake in SK Enmove. The firm said it will acquire the remaining 30 percent stake owned by Ecosolution Holdings, a special company established by IMM Credit Solution for the purpose of investing in SK Enmove shares. The purchase of all corresponding 12 million shares will be made on July 2, at a per share price of 71,605 won ($52.50). “Making SK Enmove into a wholly owned subsidiary is the optimal decision to align with SK Innovation’s strategic direction and to enhance SK Enmove’s managerial efficiency,” the company st

Chinese tech giants aggressively expand presence in Korea

Chinese tech giants are quickly expanding their presence in Korea by opening retail stores or making investments, exploiting their strong capital and cost effectiveness to put the country’s industrial sovereignty to the test. During a press conference Wednesday, home appliance giant Xiaomi said it will open its first Korean retail store in Seoul on Saturday, signaling an aggressive sales push across smartphones, smart bands, TVs and a range of other tech products. “Korea holds a strategic significance in Xiaomi’s retail strategies,” Andrew Li, general manager of the East Asia Region for the Xiaomi International Business Department, said during the event. “Our core vision is to build an ecosystem comprising human, car and home, and we believe the store we are opening will serve as a crucial channel to realize that vision.” Nestled in Seoul’s landmark IFC Mall in Yeouido, the store will be an integrated sales and service store, where customers can purchase products and access repair and maintenance service at the same location. At the store, the company will offer the Xiaomi

Upstage, FuriosaAI team up to launch Korea-developed NPU-powered generative AI

Two local artificial intelligence (AI) startups, Upstage and FuriosaAI, announced Wednesday that they are partnering to collaborate on a neural processing unit (NPU)-based generative AI business, signing a memorandum of understanding. Upstage will optimize and deploy its generative large language model (LLM) Solar on RNGD, the next-generation NPU developed by AI semiconductor company FuriosaAI. Under the agreement, the two companies will also join forces to promote NPU-powered on-premises AI infrastructure projects that run AI services and applications within a physical environment rather than on the cloud, targeting not only the local market but also expanding globally. “This collaboration is made possible entirely with domestic AI software and hardware technologies. And it is a meaningful step toward the self-reliance of Korea’s AI industry,” Upstage CEO Kim Sung-hoon said in the release. “Going forward, Upstage will continue to work in close cooperation with FuriosaAI and prove Korean AI’s technological competitiveness in the global market.” This collaboration is significan

KakaoBank targets stablecoin market with 12 trademark filings

KakaoBank has filed multiple trademark applications related to its stablecoin business in a bid to secure first-mover advantage in the fast-growing market, according to industry and company officials Wednesday. Korea's largest internet-only bank recently submitted 12 applications to the Korean Intellectual Property Office under four names — BKRW, KRWB, KKBKRW and KRWKKB. The applications cover three categories: cryptocurrency-related software, cryptocurrency financial-transaction services and cryptocurrency mining. Filing a trademark establishes priority under the principle of first-to-file, preventing the registration of identical or similar marks in the same category from being submitted afterwards. "We submitted the trademark applications to proactively respond to developments in the stablecoin market," a KakaoBank official said. "We will continue to carefully monitor relevant legal frameworks and market dynamics." Stablecoins are digital assets designed to maintain a stable value by being pegged to government-issued currencies such as the U.S. dollar. They also enable real-time paym
