Weak won, K-beauty fuel Chinese shopping trips, spending in Korea

When Chelsea Wang travelled to Seoul with two friends in late April, they barely visited any of the city's palaces or tourist attractions. Instead, their three-and-a-half-day itinerary revolved around duty-free shopping, beauty treatments, hair salons and cosmetics stores. Wang arrived with a shopping list of her own: a backpack she estimated would cost at least 500 yuan ($70) less than in China, and a bottle of perfume at a similar discount. One of her friends, Wu, a 28-year-old white-collar worker from China who was preparing for marriage, had an even bigger purchase planned. After comparing prices, she bought a Chaumet wedding ring at Lotte Duty Free in Seoul's Myeong-dong neighborhood for about 37,000 yuan after discounts, tax refunds and favourable exchange rates were figured in — roughly 11,000 yuan less than she would have paid in China. "It was really quite a good deal," Wu said. Their purchases came as the Korean won has remained weak against major currencies over the past year. One yuan was worth an average of about 226 won in June, compared with around 209 won in January, acc

Regional banks eye foreign residents to expand sales

Commercial banks that primarily serve customers in provincial areas are promoting unsecured loans exclusively for expats in a desperate bid to boost sales amid regional depopulation, according to industry officials, Tuesday. These regional banks face tough competition from major banks headquartered in Seoul as well as internet-only lenders that capitalize on digital access. In response, some have turned to providing unsecured loans for foreigners, which are not available in the mainstream banking sector due to identity verification and other security-related issues. Jeonbuk Bank is increasing its promotion of unsecured loans that specifically targets foreign residents. JB Bravo KOREA, named after its parent company in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, first became available in 2016. It allows customers to take out loans following online consultation. Gwangju Bank, Busan Bank and Kyongnam Bank also have released their own unsecured loans targeting non-Korean residents. “The products assume a high risk concerning security, but at the same time, it can bring considerable returns, as mainstre

AI revolution already in '2nd chapter,’ experts say

The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) can be likened to a new industrial revolution, and its advancements are already in the second chapter. Industry players are exploring how they can build actual value upon infrastructure, Korea’s leading experts in chips and AI industry said Tuesday. During the second session of the Korea Times-AMCHAM Forum on Korea’s business transformation for future growth, panelists dispelled some doubts regarding the viability of AI as a future growth driver, and shared how they are successfully interpreting its value for businesses. The session was presided over by Kim Joung-ho, a professor at Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST) who is known as the guru of high-bandwidth memory. Sharing their insights as panelists were LG AI Research product unit leader Jeon Ki-jeong, WRTN Technologies co-founder Kim Tae-ho and Deloitte Consulting Korea Executive Director Jung Chang-mo. “I believe we are at a crossroads where the future growth of individuals, companies and even countries depends on how effectively they utilize AI,” KAIST’s

Deadline for trade talks likely to be extended, ex-Trump aide says

A former top White House official under the first Donald Trump administration has expressed optimism that Korea and the United States will agree to extend the July 8 deadline for trade talks — the day the pause on U.S. "reciprocal" tariffs ends. Such an outlook comes as Korea's top negotiator met his U.S. counterparts this week to seek exemption of Korean products from U.S. reciprocal and item-specific tariffs. "On the deadline, I think you're absolutely right to think that an extension is possible," former White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney said Tuesday during a forum co-hosted by The Korea Times and the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM). He said Korea's effort "does count," citing Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo's weeklong visit to Washington to meet U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and several other U.S. government officials. "Trump is not looking to penalize anybody," Mulvaney said. "I would expect that deadline to be extended on a country by country basis, but all of the countries that engage in conversations would get an ex

Service disruption in Samsung Pay caused by firewall error at data center

The recent service disruption in Samsung Pay, a mobile payment system operated by Samsung Electronics, was caused by a firewall error at a data center in Suwon, just south of Seoul, government officials said Tuesday. On June 2, Samsung Pay experienced service errors lasting over three hours beginning at around 7 a.m., affecting card payments and new card registration. At the time, Samsung Electronics restored the service by switching operations from its main data center operated by Samsung SDS in Suwon to a backup center run by KT in Seoul. The company initially said the failure appeared to stem from network line issues with card companies. However, in interim findings submitted to Rep. Kim Jang-kyom of the main opposition People Power Party, the Ministry of Science and ICT said the internal firewall on the dedicated network connecting to card companies at the Suwon data center has been identified as the point of failure. The ministry noted that a further investigation is needed to pinpoint the detailed cause, including potential issues in the network equipment. It added that there was no

Daewoo E&C chief steps up global push for plant construction deals

Daewoo Engineering & Construction Chairman Jung Won-ju is rolling up his sleeves and traveling the world to clinch plant construction deals. According to the company, Jung is working hard for a “construction renaissance” through overseas projects. Over the past three years, the chairman has traveled across Europe, Asia, Africa and North America, meeting counterparts and leading dialogues while seeking to secure new contracts. Following Jungheung Group’s acquisition of Daewoo E&C in 2022, Jung became convinced that the company’s growth engine lay overseas, the company said. A highly anticipated nuclear reactor construction project in the Czech Republic, signed earlier this month, would not have been possible without Daewoo E&C’s role. Daewoo E&C is responsible for construction in the project, which is led by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power in the Dukovany region. Daewoo E&C said the project marks the company’s reentry into Europe since 1995 when it acquired Polish carmaker FSO’s manufacturing plant and rebranded it Daewoo-FSO. Last month, the company secured a 1 trillion won ($7

Daemyung Sono Group finalizes takeover of T'way Air, appoints new board directors

Daemyung Sono Group virtually completed its acquisition of T'way Air on Tuesday by holding an extraordinary shareholders' meeting and appointing a new board of directors for the low-cost carrier. T'way Air held the extraordinary shareholders' meeting at its aviation training center in Seoul and approved the appointment of nine new board directors, including internal and outside members, recommended by Daemyung Sono Group, a leading condominium and resort company in Korea. The airline's new chief executive officer (CEO) is expected to be appointed Friday. With current CEO Chung Hong-geun stepping down after a decade at the helm, industry observers expect that the successor will be chosen from among the newly appointed internal directors. In February, Daemyung Sono acquired management control of T'way Air after purchasing shares from Yearim, the airline's largest shareholder, for 250 billion won ($174.39 million). The deal was approved by the Fair Trade Commission earlier this month.

Kakao's AI service turns into nonfactor just month after launch

It has been over a month since Kakao unveiled Kanana, its conversational artificial intelligence (AI) agent, and launched its beta service on May 8. However, despite high expectations of becoming a game-changer for the tech giant, the service is quickly losing momentum, failing to sustain user interest just weeks after its release. According to mobile data analysis platform Mobile Index, daily new installations of Kanana recently fell below 100. On June 14, only 66 new installs were recorded. That marked a sharp decline since it reached its peak at about 19,000 installations on May 15, falling far behind the numbers for rival OpenAI's ChatGPT, which continues to see over 30,000 new installations per day. Kakao has been pushing for AI-driven initiatives by restructuring its sprawling business portfolio to streamline its affiliates, positioning AI as a key engine for future growth. As part of this initiative, the company introduced Kanana, designed to provide a unique conversational experience by understanding the context of users’ group chat conversations. However, the service seems to ha
