Tech leaders showcase technology at Quantum Korea 2026

Leading technology companies and institutions showcased their latest quantum technology developments at Quantum Korea 2026, which opened on Thursday, as the government seeks to position Korea as a global leader in quantum technology through various policy initiatives. Hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT since 2023, Quantum Korea will run through Saturday. This year’s edition focuses on how quantum technologies are being implemented and used in actual settings. A total of 56 companies and research organizations from 12 countries, including SK Telecom and KT, participated in the event, displaying quantum computer models and showcasing technologies that use quantum-based encryption and other security solutions. The telecom companies focused on quantum security solutions, as advances in quantum computing are expected to increase the risk of existing encryption systems being compromised. The key concept in their exhibitions was quantum key distribution (QKD) technology. QKD sends encryption keys using the quantum states of photons. Because observing a photon changes its quantum state,

Utopia or dystopia? Governance, social consensus to shape future led by physical AI

As artificial intelligence (AI) expands from cyberspace into physical reality, the world is bracing for another profound transformation in the form of “physical AI,” a term that refers to AI systems that have physical forms that can interact with the real world. During a fireside chat at the AI Forum 2025, co-hosted by The Korea Times and the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea), Tuesday, experts said they are certain that physical AI will transform industry, manufacturing, health care and every other sector of human life. At the same time, they stressed that whether the future turns into “a utopia or a dystopia” will depend not on the technology itself but on governance and social consensus on how to embrace the change. “According to recent research, the digital AI market is projected to reach $1.8 trillion by 2030, but that of physical AI will amount to $50 trillion during the same period,” said professor Lim Jong-in of Korea University’s School of Cybersecurity. “The next industrial revolution hinges on the completion of physical AI.” Lim said the glo

SNT Group buoyed by IMM Credit & Solutions as affiliates hit record highs

Shares of SNT Group affiliates have reached all-time highs after IMM Credit & Solutions (ICS), a subsidiary of the Korean private equity firm IMM Private Equity, made a strategic 200 billion won ($144 million) investment, market watchers said Tuesday. They noted that ICS’ broad-based efforts to enhance corporate value have paid off. Last month, ICS made its investment by purchasing 200 billion won in exchangeable bonds issued by SNT Group, a leading medium-sized player in Korea’s defense and energy sectors. The deal covered SNT Dynamics, SNT Energy and SNT Holdings. ICS believes the group’s stable cash flows in these sectors support expectations for long-term growth. The market responded swiftly to the investment news. Strong buying by both institutional and retail investors boosted trading volumes, driving consecutive gains for the three affiliates. SNT Dynamics jumped 5.19 percent on Monday, closing at 62,800 won and briefly reaching an intraday high of 64,900 won, setting a record. SNT Energy also hit a historic peak of 56,600 won on July 29. Korean companies will make large-scale investment worth $150 billion (208.7 trillion won) in the United States to open a new era of “manufacturing renaissance” with the world’s largest economy, Federation of Korean Industries Chairman Ryu Jin said during the Korea-U.S. Business Roundtable in Washington, D.C., Monday (local time). SUMMIT Lee presents blueprint for manufacturing revival with Washington

WASHINGTON D.C. — Fresh from his summit with U.S. President Donald Trump, President Lee Jae Myung joined the Korea-U.S. Business Roundtable on Monday, where he urged leading American executives to pursue strategies for shared industrial growth. At a hotel in downtown Washington, Lee said the alliance between the United States and Korea rests on trust, and that economic cooperation offers the strongest means of reinforcing it. He added that business leaders themselves embody the partnership’s 72-year legacy. “The United States has been an indispensable partner in Korea’s industrialization,” Lee said. “During the critical period when our industrial base was destroyed by war, Korea was able to rise as a manufacturing powerhouse with America’s help. Korea’s rapid economic development would have been impossible without the U.S.” He stressed that Korea is now ready to contribute to the revitalization of American manufacturing. “The core of President Trump’s ‘Make America Great Again’ [plan] is to rebuild U.S. manufacturing," he said.
