Samsung, SK chip investment timelines leave room for adjustment

Samsung Electronics and SK hynix announced a combined 800 trillion won ($516.4 billion) investment commitment to establish advanced chip plants in Gwangju and South Jeolla Province in Korea's southwest, but stopped short of providing a timeline for when the investments will be made or construction will begin, leaving room to adjust their spending plans until the long-term memory chip cycle becomes clearer. According to the government and the chipmakers, Samsung and SK will each invest 400 trillion won to build two advanced memory fabrication each in the region, for a total of four new fabs as part of the government’s “three megaprojects for Korea’s leap forward.” Samsung Electronics Executive Chairman Lee Jae-yong named Gwangju as the candidate site, while SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won referred to the region as a whole. While announcing the massive plans while standing with President Lee Jae Myung, who have been urging the chipmakers to make investment in the southwestern region, the leaders refrained from specifying timelines for the new fabs. Georgia governor to thank Hyundai, LG, SK, CJ during 3-day visit

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp will meet high-level executives from Hyundai Motor, LG Energy Solution (LGES), SK On and CJ Foodville during his three-day visit to Korea this week, and express his gratitude for their investments in his state. In an apparent attempt to address negative public sentiment stemming from the mass detention of Korean workers in early September at a construction site in the state, Kemp is also scheduled to join a series of interviews with Korean-language newspapers, though he reportedly does not plan to meet any government officials. According to sources familiar with the matter, Kemp will arrive in Korea on Thursday morning and leave Saturday morning. This is his third visit to Korea since his inauguration in 2019. His latest trip was initially arranged to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the state's economic development office in Seoul. However, the weeklong detention of more than 300 Korean workers has sparked calls for Kemp to offer an apology during his visit. The detentions followed a major immigration raid on Sept. 4 at the construction site of a plant jointly o

Korea's chip exports expected to hit record high for 2nd straight year in 2025: vice minister

Korea's chip exports will likely reach an all-time high for the second consecutive year in 2025 amid growing demand for advanced semiconductors sparked by the expansion of the global artificial intelligence (AI) market, the first vice industry minister said Wednesday. "Semiconductor exports this year are expected to exceed $165 billion, marking a record high for the second consecutive year," Moon Shin-hak said during the 18th semiconductor day ceremony. Korea exported $119.7 billion worth of semiconductors from January to September, up 16.9 percent from a year earlier, according to government data. Last year, outbound shipments of semiconductors came to $141.9 billion. Moon said the government will work to help Korea's semiconductor industry maintain its dominance in the memory chip market and narrow the gap with global leaders in other areas, such as system semiconductors and fabless technologies. Song Jai-hyuk, chair of the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association, said semiconductors are a "national strategic asset," which play a crucial role in AI and quantum computing, calling for "p

LG Uplus agrees to report suspected cyber breach

LG Uplus, after initially denying it had suffered a cyberattack, has reversed its stance and will formally report a suspected hacking incident to authorities amid growing concerns over leaked internal data, its CEO said, Tuesday. During a parliamentary audit session at the National Assembly in Seoul, CEO Hong Bum-shik confirmed that LG Uplus would formally report the hacking incident to the cybersecurity watchdog, the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA). “Our understanding was that reports should be filed after confirming an actual cyber breach,” Hong said. “However, given the growing confusion and misunderstanding, we plan to take a more proactive stance.” In August, the telecom company faced mounting scrutiny after global cybersecurity journal Phrack Magazine reported that two anonymous white-hat hackers had obtained eight gigabytes of leaked data from an attacker suspected to be affiliated with the North Korean hacker group Kimsuky. The leaked data allegedly includes LG Uplus’ information from 8,938 servers, 42,526 user accounts and 167 employees. KISA detected signs of h

Tesla Korea’s weak after-sales service catches flak

Tesla Korea has come under criticism for its poor after-sales service system and infrastructure, as the carmaker reportedly does not take appropriate countermeasures against repeated errors from its battery management system (BMS), according to data and experts Tuesday. The U.S. electric vehicle (EV) maker is being urged to invest more in expanding relevant service infrastructures across the nation, as its sales are rapidly increasing due to the strong popularity of its Model Y electric SUV. According to data from the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association (KAIDA), Tesla was the nation’s top-selling overseas auto brand for three consecutive months starting in July. The carmaker sold 9,069 EVs in September alone, outperforming electric models from strong competitors such as BMW Korea and Mercedes-Benz Korea by a wide margin. However, Tesla Korea is still seen as a “much less reliable” carmaker in terms of its after-sales system when compared to BMW and Mercedes-Benz, experts said. Data from the office of Rep. Park Yong-kab of the ruling Democratic Party of Korea sho

FADU to supply power management chips for top-tier client

Semiconductor fabless FADU said Tuesday it will begin supplying power management integrated circuits (PMICs) for a top-tier data center solution provider, positioning itself to capitalize on the growing demand for power management in artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. According to the company, its data center PMIC has recently passed the client’s qualification and will begin mass production. FADU did not name the provider, but described it as a tier 1 client. A data center PMIC is a semiconductor that converts, distributes and controls the power supply to various components within a server computer, such as graphics processing units (GPUs), DRAM and solid-state drives (SSDs). The PMIC that recently passed qualification is specialized for data center SSDs. As AI servers consume more than 10 times the power of conventional servers, PMICs with much higher precision and efficiency are required to respond to rapidly fluctuating power demands, thereby reducing the overall energy burden. The latest DRAM modules that use Double Data Rate 5 require PMICs. PMICs are also required for Sys
