POSCO unveils future-oriented vertiport technology

POSCO said Thursday it unveiled its next-generation vertiport technology for urban air mobility (UAM) at the 2025 Drone & UAM Expo, held from Nov. 5 to 7 at KINTEX in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province. A vertiport — a combination of “vertical” and “port” — is an airport for vertical takeoff and landing of small automated aircraft that carry passengers or cargo at low altitudes in urban and suburban areas. During the trade fair, the steelmaker operated an exhibition booth showcasing a miniature model of its vertiport along with its newly developed steel landing-deck system. “Continuous research and development, as well as government investment, are essential to establishing operational systems and innovative infrastructure for UAM,” a POSCO official said. “POSCO will continue to play a leading role in advancing urban aviation infrastructure.” Because most vertiports are installed on top of skyscrapers, their pads must be lightweight and impact-resistant to withstand repeated takeoffs and landings by aircraft. To create lighter, stronger and more cost-effective vertiports, POSCO

100 new self-driving cars to roll out for broader testing

More than 100 new self-driving cars will drive in a designated city here as the government is spurring collaborative efforts nationwide to make the industry a global paragon following the United States and China. The measure is part of an initiative announced on Tuesday by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and other related ministries to boost the country’s global competitiveness in the industry. The government said the country must execute more tests and generate more big data for analysis to reach the industry scale and road testing currently in practice in the world’s two largest economies. The government said it will designate a local city by early next year and introduce more than 100 autonomous cars there to collect big data from their driving. The measure comes after the government has already deployed 132 self-driving cars across 47 specially designated testing zones nationwide. The 132 cars have so far altogether driven 13 million kilometers in total. The figures, compared to the U.S. and China, are vastly inadequate. Google’s Waymo has surpassed 160 mill

ChatGPT launches conversational shopping research tool

OpenAI has launched a new shopping research feature in ChatGPT, aiming to transform the way users explore and compare products before making purchasing decisions. The feature is designed to create a more personalized and convenient shopping experience by enabling users to conversationally discuss products they are looking to buy directly with the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot. Regardless of their subscription status on the platform, users can access the feature by describing their needs. ChatGPT scans the web for product options, prices, reviews and related images. Depending on the product, ChatGPT can also ask follow-up questions about budget, preferred features and styles to help refine its recommendations. As a result, users get a personalized buyer’s guide, including top picks, side-by-side comparisons and direct links to purchase items. OpenAI said the feature respects user privacy, with no personal data shared with merchants, and that all results are generated organically from publicly accessible sources. Memory makers' race for AI servers expands to low-power chips

As global artificial intelligence (AI) service firms scramble to reduce the enormous amount of electricity consumed by data centers, the market’s attention is now turning to Low-Power Double Data Rate (LPDDR) memory, commonly used for smartphones and other portable devices. Nvidia, Intel and other tech companies are increasingly relying on LPDDR for server DRAM, prompting memory chip makers to accelerate development of next-generation LPDDR as well. Since Chinese players are catching up much faster in LPDDR, industry leaders Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are now under growing pressure to widen their technology gap and secure long-term dominance before the market becomes more crowded. According to industry officials, Nvidia recently picked LPDDR for server memory instead of the more standard choice of DDR5. The move appears to be aligning with the company’s transition toward the second-generation SOCAMM2 standard, which combines multiple LPDDR5X memories into a module to cut power consumption to roughly one-third of conventional DDR-based modules. Last month, Intel also unveiled C

Samsung Biologics’ spinoff sparks optimism over corporate value

Samsung Biologics has completed the spinoff off its biosimilar developing subsidiary Samsung Bioepis, with stocks of Samsung Biologics and Samsung Epis Holdings finishing their first trading session as separate companies on Monday. Analysts are revising up the estimated corporate value of the biopharmaceutical contract manufacturer, noting that its streamlined structure will be combined with lowered U.S. tariff risks to improve market sentiment on the company. Samsung Biologics closed at 1.789 million won on Monday, down 0.45 percent from Oct. 29, the last session before the stock was suspended from trading due to the spinoff. Despite separating its previously wholly owned subsidiary Samsung Bioepis, the market appears to believe that the company’s intrinsic value remains largely unchanged. In May, Samsung Biologics announced it would spin off a business division overseeing its subsidiary and new investments to create Samsung Epis Holdings. The new holding company would acquire the 100 percent stake in Bioepis from Biologics. With Samsung Epis Holdings debuting as an independent stock
