Gov't secures record electricity supply capacity for this winter

The government has secured a record amount of electricity supply capacity for this winter season in preparation for unexpected cold waves, the climate ministry said Friday. The government decided to maintain a weekly power supply capacity of over 100 gigawatts (GW) throughout this winter, along with a reserve capacity of 17 GW, the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment said. For the third week of January, typically the coldest period during winter, the government secured a record 111.5 GW power supply. Authorities expect the country will see maximum electricity demand ranging between 88.8 GW and 94.5 GW in the third week of January, with power demand likely to soar to the highest level in case a cold wave is accompanied by heavy snow. Korea logged its highest-ever power demand of 94.5 GW for winter on Dec. 23, 2022.

RLWRLD CEO urges physical AI shift to solve labor crisis in Korea

The CEO of artificial intelligence (AI) startup RLWRLD, Ryu Jung-hee, emphasized the need for physical AI-based robotics to deal with the labor shortage crisis facing the manufacturing sectors of Korea and Japan. The CEO joined the physical AI trend session at Amazon Web Services’ annual technology conference, AWS re:Invent 2025, held from Dec. 1 to 5 (local time) in Las Vegas, sharing his insight on the future of robot foundation models and industrial automation. Physical AI refers to intelligence directly embedded into machines and production systems. The panel also included Sri Elaprolu, director of AWS’ Generative AI Innovation Center; Kevin Peterson, chief technology officer at Bedrock Robotics; and Amit Goel, head of robotics and edge computing ecosystem at Nvidia. “Korea and Japan, as manufacturing-based countries, are rapidly losing skilled labor due to the demographic cliff,” Ryu said. “Our large enterprise customers feel a sense of crisis that if they fail to transition to automation within five years, their core businesses may disappear.… Physical AI and humanoid r

Hyundai Motor Group unveils mobility robot platform in Japan

Korea's Hyundai Motor Group said Wednesday it has unveiled its first mass-produced mobility robot platform, designed for various industrial and everyday applications, at a major robotics exhibition in Japan. The group, whose major affiliates include Hyundai Motor and Kia, showcased the Mobile Eccentric Droid (MobED) at the International Robot Exhibition 2025 (iREX 2025) in Tokyo, Hyundai said in a press release. First introduced as a concept robot at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in 2022, MobED has since been refined into a production-ready, fully autonomous mobility robot platform powered by artificial intelligence (AI), the company said. "Beyond a simple mobility platform, MobED offers a next-generation solution adaptable to diverse industries and everyday life. It will set new standards in the global robotics market and accelerate a future where humans and robots coexist," said Hyun Dong-jin, vice president and head of Hyundai Motor Group Robotics LAB. The group introduced two versions: MobED Basic, designed as a foundation for research and development, and MobED Pro, equipped w

Korean Air, Hyundai Rotem to build reusable methane rocket engine

Korean Air and Hyundai Rotem said Wednesday they will jointly develop a reusable 35-ton-class methane rocket engine — a core technology for next-generation launch vehicles — by October 2030 under a government-backed 49 billion-won ($33 million) program. Under the program, overseen by the Korea Research Institute for Defense Technology Planning and Advancement (KRIT), Hyundai Rotem will lead engine planning, evaluate the engine power pack and manufacture the engine's combustors, the company said in a press release. "We began work on methane engine technologies in 1994 and achieved a successful combustion test in 2006. Through this project, we expect to secure the technological base needed to commercialize methane rocket engines," Hyundai Rotem, the country's sole tank manufacturer, said. Korean Air, the nation's largest carrier, said it will lead development of the engine's turbopump — a core component often described as the heart of the propulsion system. "We are mobilizing our aerospace expertise to develop a high-performance, highly reliable turbopump optimized for methane engine

Science minister vows continued support for space sector following Nuri launch

Science Minister Bae Kyung-hoon on Wednesday pledged continued support for Korea's space industry, which played a key role in last week's successful launch of the homegrown Nuri rocket. Bae visited Hanwha Aerospace research center in the central city of Daejeon, discussing the company's achievements in the defense, artificial intelligence (AI) and space sectors, according to the Ministry of Science and ICT. The 200-ton Nuri blasted off from Naro Space Center in the country's southern coastal village of Goheung, South Jeolla Province, on Thursday last week, placing 13 satellites, including the main CAS500-3, into orbit at an altitude of 600 kilometers. The latest launch, the fourth of the Nuri project, marked the first time Hanwha Aerospace oversaw the entire assembly process as part of the government's long-term plan to hand over space technologies to the private sector. The science minister also visited the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), located in the city, presenting honors to staff members who contributed to the successful fourth launch of the Nuri rocket. "Through the dev

Samsung GDDR7 DRAM wins presidential recognition

Samsung Electronics’ Graphics Double Data Rate 7 (GDDR7) DRAM won presidential recognition on Wednesday, as its technological competitiveness continues to gain industry attention amid the rise in demand for artificial intelligence (AI) inferencing. At the 2025 Korea Tech Festival in Seoul, hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources, the government awarded a presidential honor to Samsung’s world-first 12-nanometer-class, 40-gigabit-per-second, 24-gigabyte GDDR7. This is the 12th time that the company has received the presidential commendation, the highest number awarded to a single company. It won the recognition with the 14-nanometer-class DDR5 in 2022 and the 64-layer three-dimension V-NAND Flash in 2017. GDDR7 is a DRAM optimized for graphics processing and AI computing, and its market value is surging as demand for general DRAM in AI accelerators continues to rise. Compared with high-bandwidth memory (HBM), GDDR7 is cheaper, offers greater power efficiency, and imposes lighter system workloads, making it an attractive alternative as the AI market shifts toward infere

Space agency communicates with 9 of 12 cube satellites deployed by Nuri

Korea's space agency said Tuesday it has successfully established communication with nine of the 12 cube satellites deployed by the country's homegrown rocket Nuri last week. The 200-ton Nuri blasted off from Naro Space Center in the country's southern coastal village of Goheung, South Jeolla Province, on Thursday last week, placing 13 satellites, including the main CAS500-3, into orbit at an altitude of 600 kilometers. The main satellite established communication with Korea's King Sejong Station in Antarctica shortly after deployment. According to the Korea AeroSpace Administration (KASA) and the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), authorities successfully communicated with five cube satellites on the day of the launch. On Friday, they made contact with three additional cube satellites, followed by another on Saturday. KARI plans to continue efforts to reach the remaining three cube satellites. "Cube satellites, which experience repeated failures and successes, stand at the frontline of rapidly advancing space technology," a KASA official said, noting the government will continue e
