'Samsung shares may stop slide'

By Kim Yoo-chulWhile Samsung Electronics is experiencing a steep correction in its stock prices due to concerns from investors about the firm’s heavy reliance on smartphones, an asset manager said that such worries are “exaggerated.”“The movement of a stock price reflects a firm’s earnings performance. In Samsung’s case, its profit is forecast to grow 10 percent next year from this year’s estimated 40 trillion won,” Kim Il-tae, senior fund manager at Taurus Investment Management told The Korea Times Sunday.“In that sense, Samsung’s shares will rise. Samsung is far better than Apple in parts-outsourcing, cost-cut management and product offerings.”In addition, a recovery of Samsung’s component business is helping the firm offset any negative impact resulting from a cut in margins in smartphones, he said. The manager, who is investing millions of dollars in Samsung stock, said smartphone sales growth will slow, and that Samsung can’t avoid this trend. However, he stressed that a “mobile evolution” wi

Hyun, also concurrently serving as the deputy prime minister, pointed out that the 1.1 percent growth during the April-June period ended the previous eight quarters of weak growth. The increased government spending and private consumption contributed to it, despite a slowing growth in China. The minister reiterated that growth is the top priority of the second half, adding more steps will be taken to help firms. He said that these steps will include easing regulations, tax burdens as well as more support for startups in a bid to persuade companies to boost spending.Hyun said the service industry has growth potential, adding the government is paying more attention to finding ways of spurring growth. The minister also tried to clarify the

LG sets eye on Apple

By Kim Yoo-chulLG Electronics is better positioned to overtake Apple as the Korean firm’s mobile business is expected to remain strong throughout this year, according to a leading market research firm, Friday.“If LG Electronics can expand its retail presence and marketing in major countries such as the United States and China, the company could quietly start to challenge Apple for second position,” Strategy Analytics (SA), a Boston-based consulting firm, said in an analysis report.Such positive remarks for LG, the world’s third largest smartphone vendor, come after the firm said its global shipments doubled year-over-year to 12.1 million units in the second quarter of this year. LG captured a 5.3 percent share during the period ― the first time that it exceeded 5 percent share since the company started its smartphone business. It ranked third in sales volume for the second straight quarter.“The popular Optimus and Nexus models have been the main drivers of LG’s success,” said SA analyst Linda Sui.Data from SA showed Samsung was the firm

`Samsung will continue patent war'

By Kim Yoo-chulFlorian MuellerSamsung Electronics isn’t prepared to end its ongoing patent disputes with Apple because Samsung needs a deal that will make an impact on its market share, said an influential patent expert.Florian Mueller of FossPatents insisted that Samsung holds a lead over rivals in the global smartphone market and that pride is the primary reason why it’s difficult for the disputes to be settled.“For Apple, a deal in which only a few dollars per device change hands wouldn’t make strategic sense. It needs a deal that has an impact on market share and that’s what Samsung is apparently not prepared to accept, which I understand,” Mueller said in a written interview with The Korea Times, Thursday. The patent expert said the primary obstacle to reaching a settlement is the losing party’s refusal to recognize the inevitability of its defeat.“In the Samsung-Apple case, the outcome is going to affect not only the relative competitiveness of the two largest mobile device makers in the world but also their dealings with numerous
