Samsung SDI, the battery-making affiliate of Samsung Group, said Monday that it has won a contract to supply an energy storage system (ESS) for S&C Electric in the United Kingdom.

SDI spokesman Seo Hae-su said it partnered with Younicos of Germany to supply an ESS with a capacity of 10 megawatts per hour to the British company.

Under the deal, SDI will provide ESS-related technologies, while the German firm will supply the energy management system.

“Amid Europe’s push to cut carbon emissions and to stabilize electricity networks, demand for ESS solutions is rising. SDI is paying more attention to finding additional business partners in Europe to strengthen our ESS business,” said the spokesman.

SDI’s ESS solutions will be installed by the end of July next year, and U.K. Power Networks Holdings, a U.K.-based network operator, will handle the management.

“Our ESS solutions will send power when demand reaches its peak. We expect households in that region to use electricity without major troubles even in the hot summer season,” said the SDI spokesman.

SDI, the top supplier for small lithium-ion batteries, is currently supplying ESS solutions to some households in Japan.

It also signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with KACO of Germany to improve a mutual partnership in the segment, said the company in a statement.
