Samsung Display to expand capacity to meet growing foldable phone demand

Samsung Display will expand its manufacturing facility in Asan, South Chungcheong Province, to meet growing demand for foldable smartphone panels and further cement its position as the market leader in the sector. According to industry officials, Tuesday, the company held an investment reviewing committee on Aug. 7 and decided to resume the halted construction of a new plant in its Asan site, which will be named as A7. The new plant initially broke ground in 2017 but was suspended in 2021 in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The plant is expected to be completed in 2028. Samsung Display has yet to decide which production lines will be installed at the expanded facility, but industry officials expect it to be used for foldable and micro OLED panels. Last month, Samsung Electronics announced plans to invest 140 trillion won in the Chungcheong region, and its subsidiary Samsung Display also said it would invest 67 trillion won in Asan and Cheonan. Celltrion set to ramp up pharmacy biz in France with Gifrer acquisition

Celltrion has completed the integration of French health care company Gifrer and plans to strengthen cooperation between the two companies’ sales operations to create greater business synergies, the Korean biopharmaceutical group said Tuesday. According to Celltrion, Chairman Seo Jung-jin visited Gifrer during his trip to France last week and explored ways to combine the French company’s pharmacy sales network with Celltrion’s products to generate tangible business results. Established in 1912, Gifrer is a pharmacy and health care company with a sales network spanning more than 9,000 pharmacies and about 800 hospitals across France. Celltrion acquired the full stake of Gifrer in May. Celltrion has rapidly expanded its European sales and marketing network by focusing on hospitals, medical professionals and tendering institutions, but its direct access to pharmacies has remained limited. The company said the Gifrer’s pharmacy network has strategic value because it fills the gap in Celltrion’s direct sales network, allowing prescriptions initiated at hospitals to be linked to disp

Trump order on foreign-built US ships boosts Hanwha, but strings attached

Hanwha Group and its shipbuilding unit Hanwha Ocean are gaining market attention after U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday (local time) allowed foreign shipbuilders to build up to two U.S. Navy ships in their home shipyards through a national security memorandum. The memo, which opened the door for Navy ships to be built overseas for the first time in decades, applies to foreign shipbuilders that have made “substantial and durable investments” in U.S. shipyards. Industry officials believe Hanwha Group, which have been committing hefty investments in the U.S. shipbuilding industry, will be a likely beneficiary. However, they also note that the benefits will have to be weighed against follow-up conditions, including potential transfers of shipbuilding technology, as all vessels after the first two would have to be built in the U.S. Hanwha Group said it is currently reviewing the details of the memorandum. Hanwha Ocean also said it is difficult to comment on the matter at this point. According to the memo, the measure covers a foreign supplier that simultaneously builds a new shipya

Starbucks Korea sinks into loss after 'Tank Day' promotional fiasco

Starbucks Korea operator SCK Company has swung to an operating loss in the second quarter, following a controversial promotional event that drew nationwide criticism for allegedly insulting victims of the bloody crackdowns on major pro-democracy uprisings in the 1980s, prompting some consumers to launch boycotts. During an earnings call Thursday, Emart, which operates SCK Company, said the coffee chain posted an operating loss of 18.4 billion won ($13 million) in the second quarter, swinging from 40.3 billion won of operating profit a year earlier. During the same period, net sales declined 6.1 percent to 747.3 billion won. The company attributed the loss to the absence of its Summer Frequency promotional event in June, but did not cite worsening consumer sentiment toward the brand or boycott attempts as factors. Starbucks Korea came under fire after it launched a promotion campaign for its tank-style tumblers, designating May 18 as “Tank Day.” The date marks the anniversary of the 1980 Gwangju uprising, when pro-democracy demonstrators were brutally suppressed by military forces us
