Korea marks decline in new annual HIV infections

New human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections in Korea fell below 1,000 last year, continuing a modest downward trend even as health officials track a rise in cases among foreign residents and a growing number of long-term survivors over age 65. According to the annual report released Tuesday by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), 927 individuals were newly diagnosed with HIV in 2025. This marks a 4.9 percent decrease from the previous year. Among the newly diagnosed, Korean nationals accounted for 659 cases (71.1 percent), while foreign nationals made up 268 cases (28.9 percent). While local transmissions dropped, the share of foreign nationals among new diagnoses increased by 2.2 percentage points year-on-year. This demographic shift was particularly stark among female patients. Out of 105 newly diagnosed women, 80 percent were foreign nationals. Meanwhile, men accounted for the vast majority of new infections overall (822 cases), with nearly 78 percent being Korean nationals. The cases remain heavily concentrated among younger generations, with individuals in

Koreans swap day trips for overnight getaways, survey shows

Korea’s domestic travel market is officially booming again — and locals are spending more than ever to escape the capital. After a dip in 2024, the 2025 National Travel Survey revealed that Koreans are not just traveling more — they are spending more and, crucially, pushing their travel habits well beyond the borders of Seoul and the capital area. The data paints a picture of a nation eager to get moving again. In 2025, the proportion of citizens taking local trips climbed to a massive 97 percent, with the total volume of domestic travel reaching 300 million trips annually. On average, every Korean citizen took 6.5 local vacations throughout the year, spending a total of 10.2 days exploring their own country and spending roughly 852,000 won ($550) per person in the process. The most significant trend isn't just the sheer volume of travel, but the quality of it. More Koreans are choosing to stay overnight rather than just taking day trips, with the share of overnight stays rising to 41.3 percent. This shift is providing a major economic lifeline for provincial destinations that have

Beyond K-pop: Korea wants handicrafts to be its next cultural export hit

Having already conquered global airwaves with K-pop and streaming screens with K-dramas, Korea is placing its next big economic bet on an older, more tactile asset: its rich tradition of handmade crafts. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism unveiled Tuesday a comprehensive five-year road map aimed at transforming local artisanal crafts — dubbed "K-craft" — into a high-value, export-ready industry. The initiative seeks to leverage the global momentum of the Korean wave to supercharge the country's interactive travel experiences. Central to the strategy is a push to turn cultural heritage into an immediate draw for international travelers. Under the new plan, the government will establish a network of high-profile immersive cultural centers in major tourist hubs heavily frequented by foreign visitors. These dedicated spaces will function as hybrid experiential zones, allowing travelers to try their hand at traditional craft-making techniques before purchasing authentic, locally made goods. To deepen the connection between tourism and local economies, the ministry said it will al

Seoul seeks to reshape tourism strategy to guard against overtourism

Faced with the dual challenge of surging visitor numbers and the growing friction of overtourism, municipal authorities in Seoul are pivoting their strategy away from raw volume and toward structural sustainability. The Seoul Metropolitan Government, in partnership with the Tourism Sciences Society of Korea, will launch the Seoul International Tourism Forum 2026 at the Westin Josun Seoul on Wednesday. The two-day event, which coincides with the academic society’s milestone 100th international conference, will draw roughly 900 global experts, policymakers and industry leaders to map out a qualitative blueprint for the capital’s travel sector. The focus on long-term viability comes at a critical juncture for Seoul, which has rapidly transformed into a premier global destination fueled by the soft-power engine of the Korean wave. However, local officials are increasingly aware that unchecked expansion could lead to the same cultural exhaustion and neighborhood displacement currently plaguing historic hubs like Kyoto and Venice. Korea Airports Corp. partners with TMAP to streamline airport parking

The Korea Airports Corp. (KAC) launched a real-time vacant parking spot guidance service Monday at Gimhae International Airport and Cheongju International Airport, using TMAP, Korea's leading mobile navigation platform. The service covers the P1 and P2 outdoor lots at Gimhae — also known as Busan's main airport — and the second passenger parking lot at Cheongju. Drivers using TMAP are automatically switched to a "parking mode" upon entering a lot, displaying live availability data without requiring any additional app installation. KAC developed the data system last year, processing and standardizing vacant-spot information collected through CCTV cameras, LiDAR scanners and ultrasonic sensors already installed across its airport parking facilities. This year, it partnered with T-MAP Mobility — the SK Telecom affiliate that operates the TMAP platform — to integrate that data directly into the navigation app. The service is the first of its kind among Korean public airports and represents a public-private data-sharing model: a government-owned entity making real-time operational dat

LG CNS to open interactive tech exhibition at Seoul's Dongdaemun Design Plaza

LG CNS, the IT services arm of LG Group, will open a participatory exhibition at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in Seoul from July 1-20, the company said Monday. Organized with the Seoul Business Agency, the exhibition — themed "When Technology Meets People: Connection Leads to the Heart" — uses performances, media installations, talks and hands-on activities to make invisible digital infrastructure tangible to general audiences. All exhibits are rooted in LG CNS' Brand Experience project, which won four awards at Germany's iF Design Award last year, one of the world's three most prestigious design competitions. This year, the exhibition concept itself was recognized as a winner in the iF Award's Social Impact Exhibition category. The show's visual centerpiece is a "Connecting Sphere" — a form that reads as a dot, sphere or heart depending on the viewing angle — symbolizing how technology links people and society in different ways. Displays throughout the venue demonstrate LG CNS' digital technology across sectors including transportation, finance, logistics and e-commerce. A runwa

HD Korea Shipbuilding localizes key component for LNG-powered ships

HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) said Monday it has successfully developed a domestically produced high-pressure fuel pump for liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered vessels — a component the Korean shipbuilding industry had long relied on foreign suppliers to provide. The company held a type-approval ceremony in Jinhae, South Gyeongsang Province, where Bureau Veritas, the France-based international classification society, officially certified the pump's performance and safety. The Liberia Registry, one of the world's largest ship flag states, also participated from the development stage to validate the pump's compatibility with real vessel operating conditions. HD KSOE developed the high-pressure pump — which supplies LNG fuel from storage tanks to ship engines — independently, with domestic small and medium-sized enterprises Pritech and Seongmun handling manufacturing and packaging. The pump has already secured supply contracts for more than 70 vessels from shipyards in Korea and abroad. High-pressure LNG fuel pumps had previously been dominated by overseas man

Ancient royal banquets meet augmented reality in high tech airport exhibition

For the next month, international travelers clearing customs at Incheon International Airport will be greeted not just by the hum of baggage carousels, but by a vivid, high-tech resurrection of Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) royal court ceremonies and shimmering mother-of-pearl lacquerware. The Korea Heritage Service, alongside the Korea Heritage Agency and the Korea Creative Content Agency, unveiled a groundbreaking digital exhibition on Monday titled “Tech-Driven Heritage: Great Heritage Evolving Through New Technology and Content.” Staged at the airport’s K-Culture Museum, the 30-day showcase leverages cutting-edge media art to transform traditional assets into interactive, modern experiences. The exhibition's timing intentionally overlaps with the 48th UNESCO World Heritage Committee meeting scheduled for mid-July. By positioning the showcase inside the airport, cultural officials intend to offer foreign delegates, journalists and tourists an immediate look at Korea’s soft power and its sophisticated synthesis of history and computing. Among the standout digital installations is
