Not brushing your teeth can cause dementia and heart disease, research shows.

According to the University of Birmingham, a participant had not brushed his teeth for two weeks, damaging his immune system. As a result, an infection in his gums caused inflammation in his body.

At a chronic level, this inflammation is linked with illnesses including heart disease, type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s.

When “the gum is left with disease for significantly longer, you will be doing yourself chronic, irreversible damage,” the Daily Mail quoted Professor Iain Chapple, who did the research, as saying.
