Illegal 'selfie sticks' under scrutiny

The government is seeking to find and confiscate hordes of uncertified “selfie sticks” ― the popular device that helps people take pictures of themselves using a mobile phone.

The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning said Thursday it has stepped up its search for selfie sticks that have not been approved, saying uncertified devices could cause other electronics to malfunction.

The device, a rod that extends the distance between the phone and the user, uses electronic waves to trigger the phones.

The ministry is asking citizens to help “root out the distribution of illegal broadcasting communication devices such as uncertified camera-extender rods” by reporting such sales.
