No.1 chemical castration subject appeals, rejects therapy

An accused who received a chemical castration order for the first time ever asked that the court order be withdrawn.

The first hearing of the appeal trial for Pyo, 31, was held by Kwon Ki-hoon, the chief judge of the Seoul High Court, on March 26, where the attorney said, “This accused is not a typical sexual pervert. I ask for the withdrawal of the castration medication.”

“Clinical results of the therapy causing sexual incapacity are uncertain, so I cannot agree to make him the first receiver of the court order. Rather, specialized psychotherapy is more effective for resolving distorted sexuality and preventing a second conviction. I request a re-implementation from another psychiatrist,” the attorney added.

The prosecutor suggested that “There is a need for consideration (of the claim of the accused). However, it is better to summon the same psychiatrist from the first trial than to have an immediate re-implementation.”

The judges adjudicated they would take directions of the next hearing after examine all the data to define him as a perversion. The next hearing will be held at 2 p.m. on April 23.

The first trial court asked for 15-year-and a three-year medication for sexual impulse as he was charged with the raping of five minors last January.

The government has carried out a drug therapy for sexual impulse since July, 2011, and the prosecutor asked that Pyo gets the therapy for the first time ever in August last year.
