ROC sports stars make their mark in 2010

As the Republic of China gets ready to celebrate its 99th birthday on Oct. 10, the country’s sports fans are immersed in an equally festive atmosphere following the strong showings of individual Taiwanese athletes and teams in a variety of sports this year.

The biggest win came from 21-year-old Yani Tseng, who walked away with her second major Ladies Professional Golf Association title in the Kraft Nabisco Championship tournament held in California in April. The golfing sensation grabbed her third big win just four months later at the British Open.

Tseng burst on the scene in 2008, when she was awarded the LPGA’s Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year. The pro-golfer made headline news when she snatched her first major title at the McDonald’s LPGA Championship in her rookie year.

The two additions this year made Tseng the youngest pro-leaguer on record to have clinched three major titles. A win at the U.S. Women’s Open will make her the seventh LPGA golfer to have accomplished the Career Grand Slam.
