NK soccer team coach serving hard labor

Kim Jong-hun, North Korea’s former national football team manager at the 2010 World Cup Games, is reportedly spending 12 to 14 hours a day at a building site, lugging heavy materials in response to his team’s defeat last month in South Africa.

According to The Sun, a daily tabloid newspaper published in the United Kingdom, “he was punished because his team gave the regime hope when they were narrowly beaten 2-1 by Brazil in their opening game.”

The team’s remarkable performance in the opening game led to Kim Jong-il airing the following game against Portugal, the first even screened live soccer match in the repressive regime. But the team lost 7-0 to Portugal.

The paper failed to offer any verifiable source, except quoting the Chosun Ilbo by saying that “In the past, North Korean athletes and coaches who performed badly were sent to prison camps.”

김정훈(54·) 북한 축구대표팀 감독이 2010년 남아공월드컵 졸전에 대한 처벌로 현재 강제노동 중이라고 외신이 보도했다.

영국 대중지 ‘더선’은 1일(이하 현지시간) 온라인판을 통해 “김 감독이 남아공에서 귀국한 뒤 400명의 노동당 고위 관계자들에게 6시간 동안 조사 받았다”며 “김정일 국방위원장의 아들 김정은의 신뢰를 깨뜨렸다는 이유로 처벌받고 있다”고 보도했다.

김 위원장은 북한대표팀이 남아공월드컵 조별리그 G조 1차전에서 세계 최강 브라질에 1대2로 석패하자 포르투갈과의 2차전을 중계방송하기로 결정했었다. 그러나 포르투갈에 0대7로 대패하자 김 감독과 대표팀 선수들에 대한 징계를 지시했다.

김 감독은 대표팀 선수들의 비판을 받은 뒤 노동당 회원 자격을 박탈당했고 현재 건설현장에서 하루 14시간 동안 강제노동 중이라고 이 신문은 전했다. 또 북한 정부는 과거 좋지 않은 성적으로 돌아온 감독과 선수를 강제수용소로 보냈다고 설명했다.
