Special flights, which take passengers over other countries and then return to Korea without landing at an overseas destination, will depart from Gimpo, Gimhae and Daegu International Airports, beginning Saturday, according to the Korea Airports Corp. (KAC).

The so-called “international sightseeing flights” have so far departed only from Incheon International Airport.

The government has decided to expand the special flights to regional airports in a bid to meet growing demand for travel, and invigorate the aviation, tourism and duty-free industries amid the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.

Passengers using these flights are given the same duty-free benefits as other passengers using regular international flights.

The KAC said the operation of the international terminal at Gimpo International Airport will resume with the launch of these special flights, after being suspended for more than a year due to the prolonged global health crisis.

Gimpo airport has made preparations to receive passengers at its international terminal by improving the condition of the facilities, introducing more convenient immigration procedures and constructing an additional parking lot, it said.

KAC will also carry out a variety of joint promotions with Korean Air, Air Busan, Air Seoul, Jeju Air, Jin Air and T'way Air in a bid to attract more passengers to international sightseeing flights.

“We will do our best to help passengers go on a safe trip by thoroughly complying with the government's social distancing rules and antivirus measures,” KAC President and CEO Son Chang-wan said.
