VIDEO A day of a Korean psychiatrist living in a country that won't admit it needs one

South Korea has held the highest suicide rate in the OECD for years — more than double the global average. It also has one of the lowest doctor-to-patient ratios in the developed world. The math is grim, and well-documented. What it doesn't explain is why so many Koreans who need help still won't walk through a psychiatrist's door. The reason often comes down to two letters and a number. In Korea's national health insurance system, every psychiatric visit is logged under an "F code" — the classification used for mental and behavioral disorders. F32 for depression. F41 for anxiety. F90 for ADHD. The codes are protected by medical confidentiality law and cannot be shared without the patient's consent. And yet the fear of the F code is one of the most persistent reasons Koreans avoid psychiatric care. Patients worry the code will resurface — in a future insurance application, a background check, some unspecified moment where a single record might cost them something. It is a fear shaped less by what the law permits than by what Korean society still quietly believes: that depression i

Thai cave: Four boys saved, the rest wait for rescue to resume on Monday

Four of 12 Thai schoolboys were rescued from a flooded cave on Sunday (July 8) in a daring and dangerous operation to save the children and their soccer coach who have been trapped underground for more than two weeks.Thirteen foreign divers and five members of Thailand's elite navy SEAL unit guided the boys to safety through narrow, submerged passageways that claimed the life of a former Thai navy diver on Friday (July 6).The four rescued boys were taken to Chiang Rai Prachanukrua Hospital where they will be examined. The operation to rescue the remaining eight boys - some as young as 11 and weak swimmers - and the coach was called off at nightfall until Monday (July 9) to give the divers time to replenish oxygen supplies and ensure all preparations were complete. North Korea calls talks 'troubling' as Pompeo sees 'progress'

North Korea said on Saturday its resolve to give up its nuclear programs may falter after talks with the United States in Pyongyang, contradicting Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who lauded progress made on nearly all key issues. North Korea said on Saturday its resolve to give up its nuclear programs may falter after talks with the United States in Pyongyang, contradicting Secretary of State Mike Pompeo:"These are complicated issues, but we made progress on almost all of the central issues. Some places a great deal of progress, other places there's more work to be done."Pompeo had a day and a half of talks in Pyongyang, seeking to hammer out details on how to dismantle North Korea's nuclear programs. But according to state media a North Korean foreign ministry spokesperson said the result of the negotiations was "extremely troubling,", accusing Pompeo's delegation of insisting on unilateral complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation.Whereas the North Koreans preferred, according to state media, a phased approach under which both sides took ste

How will rescuers get trapped Thai soccer team out of cave?

Twelve boys and their soccer coach were finally found nine days after going missing inside a northern Thailand cave, but the problem now is how to get them out. With most of the passageways inside Chiang Rai's complex Tham Luang cave system still underwater, there are four options to safely extract the trapped boys, reports the BBC.Rescuers are pumping water out of the cave to create walkable conditions, and have drained the first 1.5 kilometers. But the operation could be set back by heavy rains predicted in the coming days.Rising waters may force the team to dive to safety, donning full scuba masks and suits and being guided by experienced divers through the 5-hour journey with the help of guide ropes, according to the Guardian. But though this method is the fastest, it's also the most dangerous. The dive through narrow passageways under zero-visibility conditions is risky even for seasoned divers. One rescue diver has already died after delivering supplies to the trapped team.A third option being considered is drilling into the cave from above and pulling the boys out, but this is th

Details over those proposals are scarce. But he says the deal reached with Merkel will now allow Germany to better stem illegal immigration.Under the deal, migrants who have already applied for asylum in other EU countries will be held in transit centers on Germany's border until they can be returned to the countries where they applied.Seehofer leads the Christian Social Union, a member of a coalition with Merkel's Christian Democrats. His leaving would have toppled Merkel's fragile coalition.Merkel will now get to say that Germany obeyed EU rules and followe

South Koreans stage anti and pro-refugee rallies as Yemenis arrive

South Koreans held rallies on refugees on Saturday (June 30) in Seoul, after a rapid rise in the number of Yemeni asylum seekers sparked anti-refugee sentiment in the racially homogeneous country.Hundreds of protesters gathered in central Seoul and chanted anti-refugee slogans such as "Our safety is first," and "Abolish no-visa policy". Meanwhile just across the street, dozens of civic group members held a rally to support refugees and chanted welcoming slogans. Police were positioned around the protest area, however no clashes broke out.More than 552 people from Yemen arrived on the southern resort island of Jeju between January and May, more than the 430 Yemenis who had ever applied for refugee status in South Korea, the Justice ministry said. The reason the asylum seekers have chosen Jeju can be traced to a direct flight from Kuala Lumpur, established by budget carrier AirAsia X in December, the ministry added.South Korea began accepting refugee applications in 1994 after acceding to the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees in 1992.
