ZAPOPAN, Mexico — Korea defeated Czechia 2-1 to open their 2026 FIFA World Cup in Mexico on Thursday, taking a big step toward a place in the knockout stage. Hwang then assisted Oh's goal, which came a couple of minutes after a would-be Czechia goal was disallowed on an offside. FIS approves 1st PyeongChang test event

By Nam Hyun-wooThe organizing committee of the PyeongChang Olympics said Wednesday that the Jeongseon Alpine Center was officially approved for the venue of International Ski Federation’s (FIS) Ski World Cup series in February, which is the first test event before the 2018 Winter Games.Questions had lingered whether the course in Jeongseon, Gangwon Province, could host the men’s downhill and Super-G races from Feb. 6 to 7 because of the slow progress in snowmaking and other setbacks in construction. As the FIS gave green light to the organizers, the center will stage the races as the first in a series of 28 test events for the PyeongChang Olympics and Paralympics.FIS Technical Expert Guenter Hujara who inspected the course from Tuesday said: “The slope is ready and snow conditions on the hill are great; there is enough snow prepared to very high standards.“I have no doubt that athletes will enjoy the excellent course here at Jeongseon,” he said.According to the organizers, Hujara checked the quality and quantity of the snow, safety preparations and also

Korea draws 1-1 with Iraq at AFC Championship

Korea tops Group C of AFC U-23 Championship after 1-1 draw with IraqBy John DuerdenSouth Korea topped Group C of the 2016 AFC Under-23 Championship in a 1-1 tie with Iraq Wednesday (KST), and now the action really starts. The game won’t last too long in memory but that was because both teams had already qualified for the knockout stage and the only outstanding issue to be settled was which team would top the group and which would finish second. Thanks to the 2-1 win over Uzbekistan and then the 5-0 thrashing of Yemen, Korea was already ahead of Iraq on goals scored and the point meant first place. Quite rightly, coach Shin Tae-yong rested most of his star players against Iraq _ with games coming every three days, the team that is freshest will have a major advantage when the semifinals and finals come around. There were seven changes made to the team that started against Yemen and the big guns should be nice and fresh by the time Saturday comes around. One of the new men came in and scored the opening goal midway through the first half while Korea was in control of the game

Let your handle point toward the target line

By Kim Jeong-kyooIf you were able to hit your tee shots 15 yards longer, you would shout with joy, enjoying your game more than ever. It is a matchless pleasure to bang your driver far in the middle of the fairway. Better yet, that makes your approach shots easier. You can hit your favorite 7-iron instead of a harder-to-hit 6-iron. The simple tip here will help you hit your ball farther and straighter. It will bolster your ability to make more solid and powerful shots, lowering your scores. To increase your distance off the tee, you must swing your club on plane. To do this properly, you need to avoid swinging it back too far inside or outside the target line. Toward this end, you need to hinge your wrists properly.Swing your club back about hip high so your club shaft gets horizontal and parallel to the target line. Your club shaft will be running directly along your foot line. Then, hinge your wrists so your grip end points toward the target line, your hands remaining on your toe line. Make sure the butt end of the handle of your club points toward the target line when your left arm

Gov't expands financial subsidies for athletes

By Nam Hyun-woo A new program will subsidize former or active athletes suffering from financial problems, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said Tuesday.According to the ministry, the program will provide 370,000 to 500,000 won in financial support every month to athletes listed as recipients of the government’s basic livelihood security benefit, regardless of whether they already receive a monthly athletes’ pension granted to medalists at international competitions.Among the athletes’ pension recipients, those with disabilities rated not severe enough to qualify for the government’s existing disabilities pension, can also receive an additional 100,000 won every month. The government will also grant a special subsidy of up to 10 million won for recipients of the athletes’ pension who suffer any sudden injury, disease or disability that jeopardizes their livelihood. The ministry’s move follows the tragedy of the late Kim Byung-chan, a former weightlifter who won a gold medal at the 1990 Asian Games.
