Ex-World Cup star Park Ji-sung to co-lead new committee on reforming football

Former FIFA World Cup hero Park Ji-sung will serve as the co-head of a new government-formed committee on reforming Korean football, officials said Friday. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced the launch of the "K-Football Innovation Committee," with Park and Culture Minister Chae Hwi-young jointly at the helm. According to the ministry, the committee also appointed seven members, including Ryu Seung-min, president of the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee; Kim Seung-hee, executive director of the Korea Football Association (KFA); and two former national team players Lee Young-pyo and Park Joo-ho. The committee will hold "comprehensive discussions" on measures that can help bolster Korean football's global competitiveness and cover areas such as football governance, youth development and adoption of the latest technologies, the ministry said. The committee has been put together in the aftermath of Korea's elimination from the ongoing FIFA World Cup after the initial group stage. Earlier this week, Chae announced plans for the ministry to conduct an audit into operations at

Korea humbled by Dominican Republic in quarterfinals

MIAMI — Korea absorbed a 10-0 loss to the Dominican Republic in the quarterfinals of the World Baseball Classic (WBC) Friday, as its first trip to the knockout stage lasted just one game. The Dominican Republic scored three times in the second and four more times in the third at loanDepot park in Miami, while Korea managed just two hits. The game was called with two outs in the bottom of the seventh when Austin Wells launched a three-run homer off So Hyeong-jun to put the Dominicans up by 10. Under the WBC rules, a game is terminated when a team is up by 15 runs after five innings or 10 runs after seven innings. Korea starter Ryu Hyun-jin allowed three runs on three hits in just 1 2/3 innings. His counterpart, Cristopher Sanchez, limited the opponent to two hits and struck out eight over five scoreless frames. Ryu worked a scoreless opening frame before unraveling in the second inning. After issuing a leadoff walk to Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Ryu gave up a one-out double to Junior Caminero. With Guerrero chugging home, shortstop Kim Ju-won's relay throw was off line and pulled catcher Park

Warm conditions hamper Paralympics, sparking talk of moving games earlier

CORTINA D'AMPEZZO, Italy — At this month's Milan Cortina Paralympics, some athletes competed in shorts, T-shirts and tank tops. One skier lamented “tropical” conditions and a snowboarder complained that soft, slow snow put him at a disadvantage. And some worried about their safety. “I’m here to represent the disability community on a snowboard, and I want to give the best show that I can,” three-time Paralympic gold medalist Brenna Huckaby of the U.S. said. “But I’m not going to kill myself in the process ... I've got two kids at home, and I'm already disabled. I'm not trying to disable myself more." The warm weather at the Paralympics that run through Sunday has some athletes asking: Should these Games be held earlier in the year when cold weather is more reliable? “If it were my decision, I would absolutely move the Olympics and Paralympics,” American Para snowboarder Zach Miller said. Miller got into the sport because he saw the U.S. team sweep the debut of men’s Para snowboard cross at the 2014 Sochi Paralympics. At these Games, he wants to show kids how they ca

Budding Korean star seeking to use knockout game as measuring stick

The emerging Korean star Kim Do-yeong said Thursday he will use an upcoming knockout game at the World Baseball Classic (WBC) as a measuring stick for himself. Kim has been batting leadoff for the national team for the whole tournament and will likely do so again when Korea faces the Dominican Republic in the quarterfinals at loanDepot park in Miami on Friday. Kim, the 2024 Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) MVP for the Kia Tigers, is a household name in his native country but remains mostly unknown outside Korea. The opposing team, on the other hand, is full of Major League Baseball (MLB) All-Stars with impressive resumes. "It's an honor to be playing against such great players, and I feel like I've grown so much during this tournament," Kim said at a press conference in Miami. "I still have much more work to do, and I think tomorrow's game will be an opportunity for me to see where I stand." Kim set the KBO on fire in 2024, becoming the youngest player to enjoy a 30-30 campaign with 38 home runs and 40 steals at age 20. In 2025, however, Kim only played 30 of his team's 144 games due to

Korea captain implores teammates not to be intimidated by Dominican Republic

Korea captain Lee Jung-hoo said Thursday he doesn't want his teammates to be intimidated by their opponents in the quarterfinals of the World Baseball Classic (WBC). Lee and Korea will be up against the Dominican Republic at loanDepot park in Miami on Friday, with a spot in the semifinals at stake. While Lee, outfielder for the San Francisco Giants, is one of just six Korean players here with Major League Baseball (MLB) experience, the entire Dominican lineup against Venezuela on Wednesday was filled with All-Stars. All nine Dominican batters who got the start had at least 20 home runs in MLB last year, led by 45 from Junior Caminero. He batted sixth behind more established players such as Juan Soto, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Manny Machado. The Dominicans are leading the WBC with 13 home runs after four games, but Lee said he wanted to remind his teammates that they are good players, too. "Many Dominican players are stars that we've all watched on TV, and our guys may feel intimidated," Lee said at a press conference in Miami. "But we're professional ballplayers all the same. This game w

Ex-MLB All-Star Ryu Hyun-jin to start vs. Dominican Republic in quarterfinals

Korea will start former major league All-Star Ryu Hyun-jin against the Dominican Republic in the quarterfinals of the World Baseball Classic (WBC) on Friday. Manager Ryu Ji-hyun made the announcement during a press conference at loanDepot park in Miami on Thursday, the eve of Korea's first knockout game of this year's tournament. Ryu Hyun-jin, 38, spent 10 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Toronto Blue Jays. He was the National League (NL) All-Star Game starter while with the Dodgers in 2019, the same year in which he led MLB with a 2.32 ERA and finished second in NL Cy Young Award voting. This is Ryu's first WBC since 2009, when Korea lost to Japan in the final. During Pool C play in Tokyo, Ryu gave up a run on three hits in three innings against Chinese Taipei in what ended up being a 5-4 extra-inning loss for Korea. "I've named him as our starter because he is Ryu Hyun-jin," manager Ryu said. "He is the pitcher that we trust the most." Ryu Hyun-jin and the rest of the pitching staff will have to deal with the explosive Dominican lineup that led

Mexico official guarantees security for Korean team, supporters during World Cup

With Korea gearing up for FIFA World Cup matches in Mexico amid safety concerns, a state official from the North American country on Thursday pledged robust security during the big tournament this summer. Mauro Garza, strategic coordinator for economic development and growth for the western state of Jalisco, said "special security plans" will be in place during the June 11-July 19 tournament for visiting teams and fans alike. Mexico will co-host the competition with the United States and Canada. Jalisco has been experiencing heightened risks in recent weeks following the killing of cartel leader Nemesio "El Mencho" Oseguera in a February army operation. In response to his death, members of Oseguera's cartel blocked roads and torched vehicles and businesses across the nation. Some 70 people were killed during the operation and in subsequent clashes between the security forces and cartel gunmen. This development has raised concerns that Guadalajara, the state capital of Jalisco, could lose World Cup matches it is set to host, including two Group A matches for Korea, though FIFA has quickl

Veteran pitcher Ryu Hyun-jin hoping for deep run in knockout round

Veteran Korean pitcher Ryu Hyun-jin hasn't pitched in the United States since he left the majors following the 2023 season, and now he will get to reacquaint himself with American surroundings this week, as the national team prepares for the knockout round of the World Baseball Classic (WBC). The journey begins in the quarterfinals scheduled for Friday evening in Miami, and Ryu wants to make sure it lasts longer than just that one game. "We want to play a couple more games here," Ryu said after practice at Florida International University Baseball Stadium in Miami on Wednesday. "I am very grateful to be a part of this team. It's been so much fun being around this group of guys. I am so proud and happy to be wearing this uniform to represent the country." Korea is in the knockout stage for the first time since 2009, the year that the country went all the way to the final and lost to Japan. Ryu is the only member of this year's team to have played at the 2009 WBC. Ryu recalled that Korea had a little more time to prepare for the knockout round 17 years ago than now, with the national team
