What about Park Ji-sung or Lee Young-pyo as head coach?

Now that Hong Myung-bo has resigned, there will be a debate as to who is next to take the national team hot seat, one of the most pressured jobs in Asia. In the past this used to be a fun ritual. First, the media would throw lots of names around — both foreign and domestic. Then there would be a short list revealed and the excitement would move up a level with rumors, reports and all the rest. Outgoing Korea Football Association (KFA) chief Chung Mung-gyu spoiled it all of late by going outside the normal practices to ensure Jurgen Klinsmann got the job in 2023 and Hong in 2024. Indeed, this is part of the reason for the current anger. Now, though, there is going to be a new boss and while it is best not to rush, the question will soon start to be asked: Who? Despite all the criticism at Hong, he is actually one of the most successful Korean coaches. He led Ulsan HD to two successive K-League titles in 2022 and 2023 and also won bronze with the U-23 team at the 2012 London Olympics. Two years ago, there weren’t a lot of choices in terms of quality local coaches and that is still an i

Suwon FC forward Sabbag voted K League's top player for Aug.

Suwon FC forward Pablo Sabbag has earned his first Player of the Month award in the top Korean football league. The Korea Professional Football League (K League) said Wednesday Sabbag was voted its Player of the Month for August in the top-flight K League 1. Sabbag, a Colombian native of Syrian descent, is the third straight foreign player to win the top monthly prize, after Jesse Lingard of FC Seoul for July and Andrea Compagno of Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors for June. The winner was chosen based on votes by the K League's technical study group (accounting for 60 percent), fans voting on the K League website (25 percent) and players of EA Sports FC Online (15 percent) by Electronic Arts (EA) Sports, the league's official video game partner. Sabbag beat three other candidates in all three categories and finished with the total voting points of 42.04. Sabbag scored against Daejeon Hana Citizen FC in a 3-2 loss on Aug. 10 and netted twice to help his club beat Ulsan HD FC 4-2 six days later. Sabbag was named the Man of the Match and also the Player of the Week. Sabbag was also a candidate for the

Reliever trying to stay present amid scoreless streak

After striking out his third straight Doosan Bears batter to strand two runners and preserve his team's late lead, Kiwoom Heroes reliever Oh Seok-joo pumped his fist and let out a primal scream — in spite of himself. "I had no idea I did that," Oh said with a smile after the Heroes hung on to beat the Bears 4-1 in their Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) game at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul on Tuesday night. "I guess I had a dopamine rush. I was really fired up." The Heroes were up 3-1 entering the bottom of the eighth, as reliever Yun Seok-won took over from starter Raul Alcantara. Yun promptly gave up a walk and a single to put the tying run at first, with the heart of the Bears' order due up. In came Oh, who struck out Oh Myeong-jin, Jake Cave and Hong Seong-ho in succession — all of them swinging. Against the No. 3 hitter Cave, Oh Seok-joo fell behind 3-0 before throwing a fastball and a curveball for strikes, and then getting him to whiff on a forkball. "I tried to put myself in the hitter's shoes there," Oh recalled. "Just because it was a 3-0 count, I didn't want to let him

Out of KBO postseason contention, Bears manager giving young players chance to play

With his club going nowhere fast as the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) regular season winds down, Doosan Bears interim manager Cho Sung-hwan has demoted a couple of slumping veterans this week to make room for minor league prospects. In ninth place with a win-loss-tie record of 56-70-6 with a dozen games left, the Bears will not make the postseason, open only to the top five teams. And rather than having some older plays spin their wheels in largely meaningless games down the stretch, Cho has chosen to give new faces a long look. On their way to the Futures League are outfielders Jung Soo-bin and Kim Jae-hwan. Jung was batting only 1-for-15 this month, while Kim was only marginally better at 3-for-16. "Those two players were really struggling. And I was thinking about calling up a couple of our minor league guys who were working hard and putting up good numbers," Cho told reporters before the Bears' home game against the Kiwoom Heroes at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul. "The timing all worked out for us. The two veteran guys needed a breather, and I wanted to give some young guys a

Lions slugger Diaz closing in on KBO home run, RBI records by foreign player

Samsung Lions slugger Lewin Diaz is nearing records for most home runs and RBIs in a season by a foreign player in South Korean baseball. Through the weekend's action, Diaz was leading the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) with 46 home runs and 135 RBIs. The Dominican first baseman has played all 133 games so far this season, and the Lions have 11 games remaining. Diaz is three homers away from setting the single-season home run record by a foreign hitter. Ex-Lions second baseman Yamaico Navarro owns the record with 48 homers from 2015. Beyond Navarro's record, Diaz is also trying to become the first foreign player, and fourth player in KBO history overall, to hit 50 home runs in a season. Another ex-Lions star, Lee Seung-yuop, holds the single-season mark with 56 home runs from 2003. He also launched 54 homers in 1999. Also in 2003, Shim Chong-soo of the Hyundai Unicorns had 53 home runs. Diaz's Lions teammate, Park Byung-ho, put up 52 and then 53 homers in 2014 and 2015 while playing for the Nexen Heroes. Former NC Dinos slugger Eric Thames holds the RBI record by a foreign player with 1

6 new members inducted into K League Hall of Fame

The Korean Professional Football League (K League) Hall of Fame enshrined six new members in a ceremony Tuesday, a class that includes a late World Cup hero who excelled at multiple positions in the domestic league. The K League's Hall of Fame opened in 2023 in celebration of the league's 40th anniversary. The inaugural class of 2023 had six members — four in the "Stars" category for former players, one in the "Leaders" category for former coaches and one in the "Honors" category for other contributors to the league. For this year, the four new inductees in the Stars category are: late K League star Yoo Sang-chul, former league MVP Kim Joo-sung, ex-goalkeeper Kim Byung-ji and former striker Dejan Damjanovic. Ex-head coach Kim Ho was selected for the Leaders category, and former FIFA Vice President Chung Mong-joon went into the Hall of Fame in the Honors category. Yoo won the K League scoring title for Ulsan in 1998. During his nine-year K League career, Yoo spent time as a forward, a midfielder and a defender. He and his fellow Hall of Fame inductee, Kim Joo-sung, are the only two play

Pirates send Bae Ji-hwan back to minors

Bae Ji-hwan's latest stint with the Pittsburgh Pirates has lasted only eight days. The Pirates on Monday (local time) optioned Bae back to their Triple-A affiliate, Indianapolis Indians. The Korean utility player had been called up on Sept. 7. Bae, 26, made the Opening Day roster for the Pirates after leading the Pirates with 16 hits and 13 runs scored in spring training. However, he went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in his season debut on March 29 and then was thrown out at third as a pinch runner the next day. He did not play again before getting sent down to the minors on April 3. The Pirates brought him back up to the bigs on May 9 but Bae only logged seven at-bats across five games that month while recording one hit. He was optioned to the minors again on May 16. Another call-up to the majors came earlier this month, but Bae went 0-for-9 with four strikeouts and four walks in six games. For the season, Bae has gone 1-for-20 with nine strikeouts and four steals. The Indians have six games left in their Triple-A season.

Giants ace Gamboa's start pushed back due to elbow discomfort

In the midst of a tight battle for a Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) postseason spot, the Lotte Giants announced Monday their ace Alec Gamboa will miss his next scheduled start this week due to elbow discomfort. The Giants said Gamboa, who had been set to face the Samsung Lions on Tuesday, will be replaced by Park Jin instead. According to the Giants, the American left-hander had recently complained of some discomfort in his left elbow. While tests revealed no serious damage, the Giants will monitor Gamboa's arm for the next few days. "He will not be available for the two-game series against the Lions for Tuesday and Wednesday," the Giants said. "Depending on how he feels, he could take the mound on the weekend. If not, we will have to wait until next week." Gamboa has been the Giants' top starter since replacing injured Charlie Barnes in late May. Following a shaky Korean debut on May 27, Gamboa went a perfect 5-0 with a 1.72 ERA in June and earned the KBO Player of the Month honor. He pitched to a 1.46 ERA in four July starts, as the Giants kept themselves in the top three in the stan

Eagles set KBO strikeout record

The Hanwha Eagles have set a South Korean baseball record for most strikeouts by a team in a season. Through Sunday's action in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), the Eagles had 1,219 strikeouts, topping the previous mark of 1,199 set by the Lotte Giants in 2022. Leading the way for the Eagles are their top two starters, Cody Ponce and Ryan Weiss. Ponce broke the single-season record on Sept. 3 by surpassing the previous record of 225 by Ariel Miranda in 2021. Ponce leads the KBO with 236 strikeouts. Weiss is fourth overall with 185 Ks, already three more than the league-leading total from last season by then NC Dinos pitcher Kyle Hart. Another starter, Moon Dong-ju, has 130 strikeouts in 117 1/3 innings, while veteran starter Ryu Hyun-jin has contributed 109 strikeouts over 128 1/3 frames. Reliever Jeong Woo-joo has struck out 72 in only 45 2/3 innings, for an eye-popping rate of 14.19 strikeouts per nine innings — more than both Ponce and Weiss. Closer Kim Seo-hyeon has also struck out more than a batter per inning, with 66 Ks in 60 innings. Not surprisingly, the Eagles are leading t

Eagles trying to chase down Twins at top of KBO standings

With the 2025 Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) regular season down to the final two weeks, the Hanwha Eagles are trying to do something that was thought unthinkable at the start of September: overtake the LG Twins for first place. The Eagles entered September trailing the Twins by 5 1/2 games. But as the Twins began showing some cracks in their armor after the calendar flipped, the Eagles made up some ground. They got to within 2 1/2 games Saturday before falling behind by 3 1/2 games Sunday with 12 games to go. The Eagles are now 76-53-3 (wins-losses-ties), while the Twins are 80-50-3. Due to an earlier rainout, the Eagles will be forced to play Monday, typically a leaguewide off day. They are now two days into a stretch of playing eight consecutive days. After wrapping up a three-game home series in the central city of Daejeon against the Kiwoom Heroes on Monday, the Eagles will travel to the southern city of Gwangju for three against the Kia Tigers, before moving up to Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, for a pair against the KT Wiz. The Twins only have four games this week with little travel

Braves' Kim Ha-seong enjoys 1st 3-hit game of season

Rejuvenated after a midseason switching of clubs, Kim Ha-seong of the Atlanta Braves now has his first three-hit game of 2025. Kim batted 3-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored, helping the Braves defeat the Houston Astros 8-3 at Truist Park in Atlanta on Sunday (local time). It was Kim's first three-hit effort since July last year, while he was still playing for the San Diego Padres. The South Korean shortstop started this season with the Tampa Bay Rays, though he only made his season debut in July after recovering from shoulder surgery. Hobbled by leg and back injuries later on, Kim only batted .214 with a .611 on-base plus slugging (OPS) in 24 games with the Rays before being waived. The Braves claimed Kim at the start of September, and he has batted .289 with a .717 OPS in 11 games with his new team. Kim had an infield single in the bottom of the second and singled to right field in the third. Then, with the Braves up 4-2 in the fifth, Kim delivered an RBI single up the middle to extend their lead. Kim flied out in the sixth but drew a walk in the eighth to reach base for the four
