Bill targets deportation of drug, phishing offenders

A group of conservative legislators has introduced a bill that would allow the government to deport foreigners convicted of drug, sex or voice phishing offenses even if they don’t receive prison sentences. The amendment to the Immigration Act, submitted on Thursday by Rep. Kim Tae-ho and 11 other lawmakers of the main opposition People Power Party, seeks to expand the legal grounds for deportation beyond the current standard, which hinges on the imposition of a custodial sentence. Under existing law, foreign nationals can be ordered to leave only if they receive a prison sentence — including a suspended one — and that the decision is final. “There has been criticism that the current requirement of ‘a sentence of imprisonment or heavier’ as a condition for deporting foreign offenders is excessively narrow,” the conservative party legislators said. “In particular, some people point out that the law should be amended so that foreign nationals can be deported even when they have not been given an actual prison sentence in cases involving sex crimes, drug offenses and voice

Cheong Wa Dae vows efforts for peaceful coexistence as Pyongyang dismisses any dialogue with Seoul

Cheong Wa Dae said Thursday that South Korea will continue efforts toward peaceful coexistence on the Korean Peninsula, shortly after North Korean leader Kim Jong-un dismissed any dialogue with Seoul while appearing to leave the door open for talks with the United States. Cheong Wa Dae gave the response as Kim, wrapping up the North's key party congress, rejected the outreach by President Lee Jae Myung's administration, describing Seoul's olive branch as "deceptive." "Our government will continue efforts to open a future of co-prosperity in which the two Koreas can peacefully coexist and prosper together," a senior presidential official said. "To this end, the South and the North should refrain from hostile and confrontational rhetoric and build a foundation of mutual respect and trust." At the party congress, Kim warned that North Korea would permanently exclude South Korea from "the category of the same people," reaffirming his earlier position that inter-Korean relations should be treated as those between hostile states. During a military parade marking the end of the congress, Kim al

Ruling party, gov't reaffirm commitment to advance US investment bill

The ruling Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) and the government reaffirmed their commitment Thursday to push for the passage of a special bill on implementing Korea's investment package for the United States amid objections from the main opposition party. During their consultations at the National Assembly, DPK lawmakers and trade ministry officials agreed on the need for the swift passage of the bill in order to ease bilateral trade uncertainties. "The main point of today's discussion was that it is important to swiftly pass the U.S. investment bill to reassure (the U.S.) that Korea is making sincere efforts to uphold its trust-based relationship with the U.S. and honor its commitments, and that we are actually implementing them," Rep. Kim Won-i told reporters after the meeting. "Passing the U.S. investment bill is the first step toward removing uncertainties between the two countries," he added. The U.S. investment bill was introduced by the DPK in November last year to implement the trade deal reached at the summit talks between President Lee Jae Myung and U.S. President Donald Trump. Th

Park Min-young’s extreme fasting for drama role sparks health concerns

Click here for more articles by Kormedi.com. Actress Park Min-young revealed she underwent extreme weight loss for a drama role, drawing both admiration for her dedication and concern about potential health risks. At a recent press conference for tvN’s new Monday-Tuesday drama “Siren,” Park said, “My character barely eats,” adding, “During filming, I fasted while drinking about 3 liters of water a day.” She said she has since returned to her normal condition. Park plays Han Seol-ah, a woman at the center of an insurance fraud scandal. She said she tried to keep her physique as thin as possible to portray a character pushed to psychological extremes. “I worried that even slight weight gain would reduce the character’s desperation,” she said, emphasizing that physical management was part of her acting. Park previously said she reduced her weight to 37 kilograms for her role as a cancer patient in “Marry My Husband,” enduring on ion drinks alone during filming. Although she did not disclose her current weight, observers said she again appeared to push her body to its

Suspect in drone flights to N. Korea attends arrest warrant hearing

A graduate student accused of sending drones to North Korea denied the main charges against him during a hearing on his potential arrest Thursday, legal sources said. The 30-something student, surnamed Oh, faces charges of benefiting the enemy and violating aviation safety and military installation laws by flying drones to North Korea four times from September to January. The incident became known after Pyongyang claimed last month that South Korea had infringed on its sovereignty with drone incursions in September and January. During the hearing at the Seoul Central District Court, Oh claimed he was not directed by anyone to send the drones, denying suspicions of links to the military intelligence command. The charge of benefiting the enemy also applies to cases where the military interests of one's own nation are harmed, and Oh's claim appeared aimed at disputing the notion that he harmed South Korea's military interests by stoking tensions with the North. A military-police investigation task force requested a warrant for his arrest last week after concluding he had flown the drones to

Ex-DPK lawmaker appears before police over 13 allegations of wrongdoings

Former Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Kim Byung-kee appeared before police Thursday to be questioned about 13 allegations of misconduct, including suspected bribery. His police appearance came about five months after allegations of various wrongdoings involving his family surfaced last September. Kim, who defected from the ruling party last month to become an independent, arrived at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Public Crime Investigation Unit in western Seoul shortly before 9 a.m. to be grilled as a suspect. "I'm sorry to be in this situation. I'll faithfully undergo the investigation to completely clear up all suspicions and slander and restore my honor," Kim told reporters before entering the police building. The core of the 13 allegations is the suspected bribery, in which Kim allegedly received 30 million won ($21,000) from two members of Seoul's Dongjak Ward Council ahead of the 2020 general elections and returned the money three to five months later. The lawmaker also faces other corruption allegations, including his suspected acceptance of a high-priced accommodation

PM calls for rooting out fake news ahead of elections

Prime Minister Kim Min-seok on Thursday called for rooting out fake news with the help of the prosecution and the police, saying such misinformation threatens democracy ahead of elections. Kim issued the call during a meeting with relevant ministers and agency chiefs with the nationwide local elections less than four months away on June 3. "Fake news and smear campaigns that distort government policies, spread false accusations against members of the government and undermine specific candidates or parties ahead of various elections or primaries are a public enemy of democracy," he said. "While guaranteeing the freedom of expression as much as possible, acts of intentionally creating and distributing fake news in whatever form for whatever purpose and disrupting the political order or election order must be handled strictly in accordance with the law and principles." Kim warned that anyone caught producing fake news will not be condoned regardless of their social standing and that rooting it out with zero tolerance is the path to defending democracy. "The prosecution and the police must ro

Defense minister makes pitch for S. Korea's bid to secure Canada's submarine project

Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back has made an emphatic pitch for South Korea's bid to win Canada's high-profile submarine procurement project during talks with his Canadian counterpart in Ottawa, saying the Asian country's participation in it would serve as a "turning point" for bilateral defense cooperation. Ahn and Canadian Defense Minister David McGuinty met on Wednesday (local time), hours before the "two-plus-two" meeting of the two countries' defense and foreign ministers amid Seoul's stepped-up push to secure the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project, estimated at 60 trillion won ($41 billion). "Minister Ahn emphasized that the Republic of Korea's participation in the next-generation submarine project, which Canada has been pushing for, will go beyond just a simple arms export to serve as a turning point that will substantially develop bilateral defense and arms industry cooperation," the defense ministry said in a release. "He also underscored that South Korea can be the best choice for Canada, which is seeking a mid- and long-term partnership as mentioned in its Defense Industrial Stra

Fighter jet crashes in Yeongju; pilot makes emergency escape

An F-16C fighter jet crashed near Yeongju in North Gyeongsang Province on Wednesday, but the pilot safely ejected, the Air Force said. The aircraft, assigned to Chungju Air Base, went down in a mountainous area near Yeongju at about 7:31 p.m. during a nighttime training exercise, according to the Air Force. "The pilot ejected safely and has been confirmed unharmed, and no civilian damage has been reported at this time," the Air Force said in a text message to reporters. Fire authorities located the pilot at approximately 8:10 p.m., after he became caught in a tree about 20 meters high while descending by parachute. He was rescued around 9:48 p.m. and transported to a hospital, the Air Force said, adding that he is in good condition. Authorities also said a wildfire sparked by the crash in the surrounding area has been fully extinguished. The Air Force said it has formed a task force to determine the exact cause of the crash.

Prosecution drops final appeal in DPK cash-for-votes scandal case

The prosecution said Wednesday they have dropped a final appeal against an appellate court's recent acquittal of one incumbent and two former ruling Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) lawmakers charged in connection with a cash-for-votes scandal surrounding the party's 2021 leadership election. Last week, the Seoul High Court overturned guilty verdicts for Rep. Heo Jong-sik and former Reps. Youn Kwan-suk and Lim Jong-seong, who had been accused of distributing cash envelopes to support former DP leader Song Young-gil ahead of the party's national convention in May 2021. The court said recordings of phone calls submitted by a former DPK official, which had served as key evidence in the case, were illegally obtained, reversing a lower court's ruling that had handed down suspended prison terms for the three politicians. The Supreme Prosecutors' Office said in a press notice that it withdrew the appeal in consideration of a similar Supreme Court precedent rejecting illegally obtained evidence. In a separate ruling on the same election scandal earlier this month, an appeals court acquitted Song

Korea reports 1 new bird flu case; total rises to 49

Korea has confirmed one additional case of highly pathogenic avian influenza at a layer farm on the northern outskirts of Seoul, bringing the total number of cases this season to 49, officials said Wednesday. The new case was reported at a poultry farm in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province, some 40 kilometers north of Seoul, according to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters. Authorities said they are currently controlling access to the farms, carrying out the culling of the affected birds and investigating the cases. A 24-hour standstill order has also been issued for neighboring areas of the farms, they added. The government urged strict compliance with quarantine and hygiene guidelines, including access controls and disinfection measures, to prevent further spread amid the seasonal migration of birds toward the end of winter.
