N. Korea eyes nuclear state like Pakistan: expert

North Korea seems to be striving toward a nuclear state status like that held by Pakistan in order to use its nuclear arsenal as leverage to deal with superpowers, a South Korean professor said Friday."North Korea is dreaming to obtain the status enjoyed by Pakistan, which uses its nuclear arms as collateral to fight India, (Pakistan's far larger rival,") said Han Suk-hee, a professor at Yonsei University's Graduate School of International Studies, in a paper released before a local forum. The forum was in the southern coastal city of Tongyeong and arranged by the National Unification Advisory Council, a presidential advisory committee on South Korea's unification policy. The professor said South Korea needs to cooperate with other superpowers such as the U.S. and China in order to denuclearize the North. In defiance of the international communities' ban on nuclear activities on North Korea, the country conducted its third nuclear test on Feb. 12, prompting the United Nations to further tighten punitive actions. The country's official newspaper the Rodong Sinmun, published by the governi

Samsung heir raises his profile in and out of S. Korea

Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong has moved to expand his profile since his promotion in December, in a clear sign that he is on track to lead Samsung Group, South Korea's largest family-owned conglomerate founded by his late grandfather decades ago.Lee left for Japan on Thursday for talks with Japanese business partners via Samsung private jet, not the commercial flights he used during his previous overseas trips. The rare development suggested that his stature and role inside Samsung Group has been enhanced. He has also recently met high-profile former and current foreign officials, apparently on behalf of his aging father Lee Kun-hee, the chairman of Samsung Electronics, the world's biggest maker of smartphones, TVs and computer memory chips.Last month, the junior Lee met with former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and France's first South Korean-born Cabinet minister Fleur Pellerin at Samsung Electronics headquarters in southern Seoul.Lee also saw Powell out after their meeting, a rare move for the junior Lee, who previously favored not to disclose his meetings wi

Cop goes free after drunk driving

A cop in Daegu who should have been responsible for checking up on drunk driving was found to have taken the wheel while intoxicated but the police let it pass. The policeman was involved in an automobile accident while intoxicated and was arrested following a report by a passerby a little after midnight on April 11.But investigators said the policeman drank after he got home and there was no evidence that he was intoxicated when the accident occurred, thus found him innocent.Reports of the development invited strong criticism from those watching the case.According to the police, they went to the home of policeman Goh after receiving a report from a citizen who witnessed the accident and found him drinking at home.He took a breathalyzer test the next morning which revealed a blood alcohol content of 0.03 percent which medically means that it was 0.08 percent at the time of the accident. That means he should have his driver’s license suspended for 100 days.
