Liquid crystal captures spirit of science

Dr. Frank Stangenberg-Haverkamp, right, talks to The Korea Times’ Managing Editor Oh Young-jin. / Korea Times photo by Yoon Sung-wonBy Yoon Sung-wonFrank Stangenberg-Haverkamp, head of a German pharmaceutical-chemical company, said that patents are power for further growth and protecting them is very important. “The principle is that if you don’t protect your patent, it will be open up and lose its value,” the chairman of the Family Board of The Merck Group told The Korea Times. “Then why should you invest hundreds of millions into developing certain things if you don’t protect patents?”Referring to the company’s “wide-sighted” effort in researching liquid crystal, Stangenberg-Haverkamp said developing a new technology requires significant effort as well as a mindset to maintain the progress of the company.Merck started researching liquid crystal when nobody realized its profitability. One German's unification story

By Oh Young-jinOne subject Koreans would like to ask Germans about would be their experience with national reunification. So I did when I recently interviewed Dr. Frank Stangenberg-Haverkamp, chairman of the Family Board of Merck, the chemical and pharmaceutical company based in Darmstadt. I didn’t expect much from him. His story has the power of experience. “I always believed that we should be reunited,” he said. The date of Aug. 13, 1961 was etched in his mind because East Ge

I recently tried to find an answer during a longer-than-one-hour interview with Dr. Frank Stangenberg-Haverkamp, leader of the conglomerate. Initially, I felt tempted to say that it was a unique governance structure but concluded that this only partially explained it. The real answer was uttered by the interviewee toward the end of interview. “We don’t own the business. We are just trustees.” “You need a mindset of austerity, you have to save money and you have to live for the
