The Sewol ferry that sank last April left more than 300 people dead or missing. / Korea Times fileThe mother of a man who mocked Sewol ferry sinking victims made a public apology on Sunday.The man, surnamed Kim, 20, posted a selfie last month in which he wore a Danwon High School uniform while eating a fish snack.More than 300 people, mostly students from the high school, died or went missing after the ferry capsized on their field trip in April 2014.The posting on user-content website Ilbe Storehouse angered the public. Police detained Kim days after he posted the picture.“When I was informed of the news, I was shocked,” the mother said in a letter of apology to Yonhap News Agency. “I was dumbfounded, and didn’t apologize to them immediately.”“I should have apologized right after the incident. “It is my fault because I brought him up in a wrong way. I am so sorry to hurt their feelings.”

Aviation fuel prices continue to fall

/ YonhapAviation fuel prices are falling along with plunging oil prices.An airline industry official said Monday that aviation fuel prices will fall from level 2 to level 1 next month.The aviation fuel price for the U.S.,, Europe and Africa will fall from $15 to $5, while the Middle East and Oceania price will fall from$14 to $4.The southwest Asia and middle Asia will fall from $7 to $2, China and northeast Asia from $5 to $2. For Japan and Shantung Province in China, the price will fall from $3 to $1. For Southeast Asia, the price will fall from $6 to $2.Aviation fuel prices have been falling steadily since last September, when the prices were at level 14. The price could ease to “zero” again if the falls continue.Fuel surcharges are imposed when Singapore aircraft fuel costs above 150 cents a gallon.

Many married men have sexual affairs

/ Korea Times fileNearly forty percent of married men in Korea have sexual affairs with other women, a survey shows.The Korean Women’s Development Institute surveyed 2,000 men and women in July 2014 and published the result recently, a newspaper said Monday. A total of 36.9 percent of male respondents said they had sex with other women after getting married.Only 6.5 percent of female respondents said they had sexual affairs with other men after marriage.Of the men who had affairs, 23.6 percent said they faced legal penalties for committing adultery.Married men and single women were the major groups that committed adultery, with the latter targeting married men.

Korean student wins international steel contest

/ Yonhap A Korean girl has won the Asian section of an international competition to produce steel at the lowest total cost.Cho Da-hee, who is studying materials science and engineering in a master and doctorate program at Seoul National University, won the Asia·Oceania regional championship at 9thSteelChallenge hosted by The World Steel Association (worldsteel).The annual competition aims to foster knowledge about steel for students and employees in the steel industry.Contestants had to make high-strength structural steel using a computer to simulate the process.The aim is to develop techniques to produce cheaper quality steel with for use in buildings.A total of 1,922 people from 34 countries participated in the competition.The world championship took place in Brussels, Belgium, on Feb. 11 with eight teams of regional champions from the first round competing for the world title.Chongqing University of Science and Technology and Baosteel Group Corporation, both from China, won the world championship in the student category and the industry category respectively.Cho gradua

Shopping bag with Suzy printed on it / Courtesy of NaverSinger and actress Suzy, 22, from girl group “Miss A” has lost a lawsuit claiming an online fashion store named its products “Suzy Hat” and used her pictures without permission.Seoul Central District Court dismissed the JYP Entertainment star’s claim that the store violated her rights by using her face and name for business purposes.According to the lawsuit, the store showed the hats in online search results after Suzy Hat was typed in as the keyword. The store showed the star’s photos along with the hats on its webpage.A JYP insider said the ruling was a disappointment and that the company might take further legal steps, an online newspaper said Sunday.

Uzbekistan player banned for punching Korean

An Uzbekistan U-22 football player has been banned for a year for punching a South Korean opponent in the head,  the Uzbekistan Football Federation (UFF) says.“Navbahor football club player Tohir Shamsiddinov has been barred from playing for the Uzbekistan national team and banned from all football-related activities for one year for his violent conduct against a Korean player during the King’s Cup tournament in Thailand,” the UFF said on its website.The player punched Korea’s Sim Sang-min three times in the head, drawing international criticism.The UFF also said it would sack its youth team head coach.“The Uzbekistan Football Federation has parted company this evening with Shuhrat Maqsudov following the violent behavior of the Uzbekistan Olympic team against Korea in the King’s Cup in Thailand,” the UFF said.Another Uzbek player, Jaloliddin Masharipov, avoided punishment for an acrobatic kick to the head of South Korea’s Kang Sang-woo.
