Gender income gap grows

/ YonhapBy Lee Ji-hyeThe income gap between male full-time employees and female temporary workers has increased significantly over the past 10 years.According to the Korea Labor and Society Institute, an average female temporary worker received 37.3 percent of what a regular male employee got a month in 2004. Last year's figures showed that fell to 35.9 percent.Hourly pay also dropped, from 42.9 percent more than 10 years ago, to 41.8 percent last year."For the last decade, conditions have been insufficient for irregular workers, such as social insurance registration rates, which did not exceed 30 percent," said Kim You-sun, a senior research fellow at the institute."This clearly shows that current labor laws are failing as a system to protect the temporary workers they were made to help."The study also noted that the number of temporary workers had nearly doubled in the past 10 years _ there were 1,070,000 temporary workers in 2004, while in 2014 there were 2,030,000.Kim said the figures showed that working conditions had become worse."In order to fight the discrimination that femal

The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism said Wednesday that 18 percent of all foreign tourists over the past two months were Koreans.In January and February alone, of a total of 1,456,692 international visitors, 262,013 Koreans visited Vietnam.Chinese tourists ranked second with 237,083 and Japanese tourists third with 116,914.Visitors from the United States and Australia came in fourth and fifth, respectively.Chinese tourists had topped the list until this year."Vietnam has targeted Korean tourists by selling package travel deals that include trips to Laos and Cambodia ㅡ which makes the Vietnam trip stand out compared to Thailand and the Philippines," a Vietnamese official said.

Hundreds of passengers evacuate from Hyehwa Station

By Lee Min-hyungHundreds of passengers evacuated from Hyehwa Station in Seoul, Wednesday night, after smoke filled a train.There were no casualties."A smell of burning filled the train," one of the passengers surnamed Cho said."Everyone rushed out, but there was no immediate announcement by station employees."She said the station was in a state of chaos, with people pushing one another to escape from the train bound for Danggogae Station. The incident took place at around 10:14 p.m."A few minutes after subway doors were opened, an announcement was issued that all the passengers should get out of the train as soon as possible," she said.Firefighters were dispatched to the scene, but there was no fire.Passesngers seem to have thought there was a fire due to the heavy smoke, a metro official said."We are investigating the exact cause of the incident," he said. U.S. envoy's attacker 'going for jugular'

By Lee Ji-hye The parents of the U.S. Ambassador to Korea say the man who attacked their son on Thursday wanted to kill him. / Courtesy of TwitterA Seoul university is under fire over a sexually harassing event during a school-organized orientation session for freshmen.It is alleged the incident happened when Sogang University’s business school students took a three-day orientation session at a resort in Gangwon Province from Feb. 25.The incident was revealed on Tuesday when some controversial photographs went viral online. They contained lewd names of the resort’s rooms and rules that freshmen had to follow to get into the rooms.Some of the names were: “I love your breasts” room and “Please touch my small breasts” room.Below the names were rules freshmen should follow when entering the rooms. Most of the rules contained lewd messages.When female freshmen entered the “I love your breasts” room, they had to do a sexy dance in front of senior students.The student union has apologized, promising not to repeat the event.

Police acquired pilophon in a white bag, hand bags used to carry the drug, syringes and mobile phones used in dealing the drug. / Yonhap Kim Sung-minPolice have detained actor Kim Sung-min for allegedly using philopon, a drug banned in Korea. It is the second time the actor, 41, has been detained over the drug.Seongnam Sujeong police plan to request an arrest warrant tomorrow for Kim.Police have arrested five alleged distributors of the drug, including a man, 22, identified by the surname Park, and seven who allegedly bought the drug from the distributors, including a girl, 17, surnamed Kim.Police allege Park smuggled 150 grams of the drug from Cambodia, worth 300 million won ($260,000) and enough for about 3,000 people.Kim smuggled the same drug from the Philippines from April 2008 to August 2010 and used it more than four times in September 2010. A court sentenced Kim to two years and six months in jail, suspended for four years, and fined him 900,000 won for the offences.
