2 Chinese men arrested for filming US aircraft carrier, Korean naval base

Two Chinese men have been arrested for illegally filming a visiting U.S. aircraft carrier and a Korean naval base in Busan, police said Thursday. The two, both exchange students at a Busan university in their 30s and 40s, respectively, are accused of flying a drone near the Korean Fleet Command in southern Busan between March 2023 and June 2024 to illegally film the inside of the naval base and the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt. The 40-something man was arrested on charges of benefiting an enemy by other methods and violating the military base law, the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency said. The police also arrested the 30-something man on charges of violating the military base law and booked a Chinese woman in her 30s without detention on the same charge. On Wednesday, the Busan District Court issued arrest warrants for the two men, citing the risk of destruction of evidence and fleeing. It is the first time that a foreigner has been arrested on charges of benefiting an enemy by other methods and violating the military base law, the police said, adding the military author

The man has been accused of posting a photo of a map of the location believed to be the wedding venue for the son of Lee, along with the wedding date, saying that he could get the plate numbers of cars during the wedding. His posting was uploaded to a part of social media that mostly features the claims of ultra-right people. The man reportedly pleaded guilty to all charges and claimed he did not intend to execute the plan.

Special counsel rejects ex-President Yoon's request for private appearance

The special counsel investigating former President Yoon Suk Yeol's martial law bid rejected his request Thursday to appear for questioning in private. Park Ji-young, a deputy to Special Prosecutor Cho Eun-suk, told reporters Yoon's lawyers had asked that he be allowed to use the underground parking when appearing at the team's office on Saturday. "No former president has ever entered through the underground parking," she said, listing everyone from Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo to Lee Myung-bak, Park Geun-hye and Roh Moo-hyun. "We told them that we cannot accept their request to change the entry method." In response, she said Yoon's lawyers submitted a written opinion that he cannot appear for questioning unless the request for underground parking is accepted. "This can be considered an effective rejection of questioning by appearance," Park said. The deputy special counsel suggested the team could reapply for a detention warrant for Yoon, saying, "In such a case, anyone would consider steps under the Criminal Procedure Code." Hours earlier, Yoon's lawyers told the press that he wishes to

Court issues new arrest warrant for ex-defense minister in martial law case

A Seoul court on Wednesday approved the extended detention of former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun over his alleged role in former President Yoon Suk Yeol's martial law declaration. The Seoul Central District Court granted the warrant following a hearing, after Special Counsel Cho Eun-suk sought the arrest by indicting Kim on new charges of obstructing official duties and abetting the destruction of evidence in connection with the martial law case. Kim is already in custody and on trial for insurrection-related charges but was set for release on Thursday with the expiration of his initial six-month detention period. The court cited concerns over Kim's risk of evidence destruction in issuing the new warrant. The court had approved bail earlier this month under certain conditions, but Kim refused to accept the terms and chose to remain in custody. In response, the special counsel filed additional charges and sought the new warrant. During the hearing earlier in the day, Kim engaged in a back-and-forth with the court by repeatedly seeking the recusals of judges overseeing his martial law ca

Court rejects detention warrant for ex-President Yoon; special counsel summons him for Saturday

A Seoul court on Wednesday dismissed a request to issue a detention warrant for former President Yoon Suk Yeol in connection with his declaration of martial law last year, the special counsel said. The Seoul Central District Court rejected the special counsel's request, which was made on Tuesday as part of an investigation into Yoon's alleged obstruction of official duties and other charges related to the declaration of martial law in December. Upon the court decision, the special counsel team, led by Cho Eun-suk, immediately notified Yoon to appear at 9 a.m. Saturday, officials said, adding that it will consider seeking a formal detention warrant if Yoon fails to comply. "The court dismissed the request on the grounds that Yoon has expressed his willingness to comply with the special counsel's summons," the team said. "If he fails to appear, we will consider seeking a formal warrant," it added. Before the case was transferred to the special counsel, police had summoned Yoon for questioning on June 5, 12 and 19, but he ignored all three requests, which prompted the special counsel to seek

Military court grants conditional bail to 2 military commanders linked to martial law plot

A military court has granted conditional bail to two detained commanders standing trial for their alleged roles in former President Yoon Suk Yeol's short-lived martial law imposition, officials said Wednesday. The decision is expected to immediately trigger procedures to release Army Chief of Staff Gen. Park An-su, who served as martial law commander, and Lt. Gen. Lee Jin-woo, former chief of the Capital Defense Command, according to the officials. The decision came after military prosecutors sought conditional bail for four detained commanders, including the two, who were scheduled to be discharged upon the expiration of their statutory six-month detention periods between late June and early July. Ahead of the expirations, military prosecutors requested bail on the condition that the commanders not contact others involved in the martial law case, citing concerns over potential destruction of evidence if they are released unconditionally. Prosecutors, however, withdrew their request for bail for the other two — Lt. Gen. Yeo In-hyung, former head of the Defense Counterintelligence Comma

Comedian Lee Kyung-kyu admits driving after taking anxiety medication

Comedian Lee Kyung-kyu has acknowledged driving while under the influence of prescription medication for panic disorder, police said Tuesday. The Seoul Gangnam Police Station summoned Lee, 65, for questioning as a suspect in violating the Road Traffic Act. The session began around 9 p.m. and ended at 10:45 p.m., during which he explained why he had taken the wheel after medicating. “I didn’t fully recognize that I shouldn’t drive when I’m unwell after taking panic disorder medication,” he told reporters after the interview. “If anyone is on similar medication, they should refrain from driving, and I will be more careful in the future. I apologize to fans who have long supported me.” His lawyer, reading a statement on Lee’s behalf, said the entertainer has suffered from panic disorder for a decade and took his prescribed drugs the night before the incident. Feeling worse the next day, he chose to drive himself to a hospital, a decision he called “negligence with no excuse.” Police allege that around 2 p.m. on June 8, Lee drove through Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam District, af

Man crashes SUV into police station after 36 speeding tickets

A man in his 40s who was repeatedly caught for speeding drove his SUV into a police station out of anger, authorities said Tuesday. South Jeolla’s Suncheon Police Station said it has requested an arrest warrant for the suspect on charges of unlawful entry into a government facility and destruction of public property. He was taken into custody at the scene. According to police, the incident occurred at around 8:23 p.m. on Monday when the man drove his SUV through the glass entrance of the Suncheon Police Station, crashing into an interior wall before coming to a stop. No officers were injured as no one was present in the lobby at the time, but the crash shattered the front glass and damaged parts of the building, causing an estimated 10 million won ($7,200) in property damage. Police confirmed the driver was not under the influence of alcohol. During questioning, he said he was "enraged after being repeatedly caught by speeding cameras." Investigators said he was cited for speeding 12 times this year alone, and 36 times since 2021. This article from the Hankook Ilbo, the sister publicatio

Special counsel seeks warrant to detain ex-President Yoon Suk Yeol

The independent counsel investigating former President Yoon Suk Yeol's short-lived imposition of martial law sought a warrant Tuesday to detain him after he repeatedly snubbed summonses for questioning over alleged obstruction of official duties and other charges, officials said. The special counsel, led by Cho Eun-suk, filed for the warrant against Yoon with the Seoul Central District Court, citing Yoon's refusal to comply with three police requests to appear for questioning over charges related to his Dec. 3 martial law declaration. Before transferring the case to the special counsel, the police summoned Yoon for questioning on June 5, 12 and 19, but he snubbed all three requests. "The counsel, which took over the case Monday, decided to file for an arrest warrant in consideration of the investigation's continuity," the investigation team said in a notice. The action came shortly after the special counsel began operations last Wednesday, following the passage of a bill in early June mandating an independent probe into insurrection charges against Yoon.
