Park to be questioned Tuesday in prison

By Jung Min-hoFormer President Park Geun-hye will be questioned Tuesday at the Seoul Detention Center as the prosecution carries on its investigation into the major corruption scandal involving her close friend Choi Soon-sil.The Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office said Sunday that prosecutors will question her at the detention facility in Uiwang, Gyeonggi Province, following the Seoul Central District Court’s decision to issue an arrest warrant for her Friday on 13 charges.“At first, we asked her to come to the prosecutors’ office Monday for questioning, which her lawyers rejected because of her psychological state and for security reasons,” an official from the team dealing with the case said. “So we have decided to do it at the detention center on Tuesday.”With less than 20 days to collect evidence and testimony before the warrant expires April 19, prosecutors are apparently accelerating the investigation. South Korea plans to conduct a massive search at the site of the Sewol ferry accident that occurred three years ago, which claimed more than 300 lives, officials said Sunday.Shanghai Salvage, the company that recently raised the sunken Sewol Ferry, will conduct a two-month-long, 32,000-square-meter-wide search of the seabed where the ship remained, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said. The aim of the search is to find the remains of those still missing and other clues that can shed better light on the sinking.In 2015, with the Chinese consortium led by the state-run Shanghai Salvage won the 85.1-billion-won ($72 million) bid to pull the ferry out of the water intact.The ministry said the area has been divided up into 40 zones for 50 divers to conduct a detailed search. Authorities said underwater steel fences, three meters high, have been set up around the area where the Sewol sank.After an initial search, Shanghai Salvage will carry out a second search using sonar. 2 sailors of missing Korean cargo ship rescued; 22 unaccounted for

A life raft believed to be from a South Korean ship that sank in the South Atlantic last week has been found with efforts now under way to safely rescue two sailors on the raft, the Seoul government said Sunday.The search for the missing South Korean ship, Stella Daisy, began Saturday, one day after the ship's crew members sent a text to their South Korean employer, saying their ship was sinking.The Marshall Islands-flagged ship was sailing near Uruguay when it made the distress call, according to the foreign ministry. The life raft was found drifting by commercial ships in the area. An earlier report said two life boats had been spotted.The ministry later corrected only one small raft has been found, carrying two people. The nationalities of its two occupants have not been confirmed.The 266,000-ton Stella Daisy was carrying eight South Korea and 16 Filipino sailors. The fate of the South Korean ore carrier also remains unconfirmed. (Yonhap)

Korean cargo ship missing in Uruguayan waters

By Ko Dong-hwanStella Daisy / YonhapA Korean cargo ship with eight Korean and 16 Filipino sailors went missing in the South Atlantic earlier this week after making a distress call, according to Korean foreign ministry Saturday.Stella Daisy, a 266,000-ton ore carrier owned by Polaris Shipping, was sailing in waters near Uruguay after departing Brazil on Mar. 26. But at about 11:20 p.m. Friday (Seoul time), the ship's crew members told their employer using Korean mobile text app KakaoTalk that their ship was sinking."It is emergency," the distress call said, according to Yonhap News Agency. "Water leakage at Port No.2. (The ship is) slanting fast toward the port side."A ministry official said they “cannot rule out the possibility that the ship may have sunk” and whether the crew members survived has yet to be confirmed.The ministry said it has notified Uruguay's coast guard of the accident through its diplomatic mission in the South American country.A search for the sailors began involving commercial vessels near the site of the alleged accident.
