Ex-Nat'l Education Commission head appears for special counsel questioning over alleged bribery of ex-first lady

A former head of the National Educational Commission (NEC) appeared before a special counsel team Thursday to be questioned about bribery allegations involving former first lady Kim Keon Hee. Special counsel Min Joong-ki's team has been investigating allegations that former NEC Chairperson Lee Bae-yong was appointed to the post after gifting a golden turtle ornament to Kim. The bribery allegations surfaced after a special probe team searched the home of former first lady Kim's mother in connection with a real estate development scandal and discovered the golden turtle weighing 10 don (37.5 grams) along with a letter Lee had written to former President Yoon Suk Yeol and Kim. The team suspects the turtle was given as a gift to Kim in exchange for Lee's appointment as the inaugural chief of the commission in September 2022. Lee appeared at Min's office in a wheelchair at around 9:30 a.m. and did not respond when asked by reporters whether she offered the gold turtle as a bribe. It marked the first time Lee appeared before the special counsel. She was asked previously to appear for questionin

Japanese netizens question lenient drunk-driving penalties in Korea after fatal crash

The death of a Japanese tourist who was struck by a drunk driver in Seoul has sparked criticism in Japan over what many see as Korea’s lenient punishment for such offenses. A post believed to have been written by a member of the victim’s family has drawn widespread attention online, questioning whether strong penalties are possible under Korean law. A social media user with the handle abcz8756 wrote Tuesday, “In Korea, my mother and sister were hit by a drunk driver. My mother died, and my sister is in [a] critical condition.” The post added, “I heard that drunk drivers in Korea often receive light punishment and no compensation. Is it really impossible to impose stricter penalties, unlike in Japan?” The online post garnered over 1.8 million views and 20,000 likes in a single day, with both Japanese and Korean users offering condolences. Many Korean commenters expressed sympathy, saying they also “want harsher punishment for drunk drivers.” The accident occurred at around 10 p.m. Saturday, when a man in his 30s whose surname is Seo drove onto a sidewalk near Dongdaemun Sta

Prosecutors seek prison terms for ex-security, NIS chiefs over slain fisheries official case

Prosecutors on Wednesday sought a four-year prison term for former National Security Adviser Suh Hoon and a two-year term for former National Intelligence Service (NIS) Director Park Jie-won over the alleged cover-up of the 2020 killing of a South Korean fisheries official at North Korea's hands. The sentencing requests were made during the final court hearing at the Seoul Central District Court, wrapping up a trial that began some three years ago with the indictments of five officials of former President Moon Jae-in's administration, including Suh Hoon and former Defense Minister Suh Wook. The fisheries official, Lee Dae-jun, was fatally shot by North Korean soldiers near the de facto maritime border in the West Sea on Sept. 22, 2020, a day after going missing while on duty on board a fishery inspection vessel. His body was burned by the North. The Moon administration announced Lee sought to defect to the North in what prosecutors believe was an attempt to prevent the incident from hampering inter-Korean relations. Suh Hoon has been indicted on charges of abusing his power after he alle

State mediation panel advises SK Telecom pay $208 per complainant over data breach

A state mediation panel said Tuesday it has advised SK Telecom, the country's top mobile carrier, to pay 300,000 won ($208) in damages to each complainant over a massive data leak in April. The Personal Information Dispute Mediation Committee said the proposal was agreed upon during a plenary session Monday after a total of 3,998 people, including three cases of group disputes, filed for mediation of disputes involving SK Telecom. In April, the company reported a large-scale cyberattack on its main servers, during which universal subscriber identity module (USIM) data of its 23 million subscribers was potentially compromised. In response, it devised a 500 billion-won customer compensation program that included mobile rate cuts, additional data offers and discount coupons starting in August. The committee said the damages amount was determined based on its recognition of the anxiety and inconvenience experienced by subscribers following the data breach. The proposal was sent to the company, along with recommendations to establish and implement internal control plans and strengthen safety m
