Court holds arrest warrant hearing for drunk driver who hit, killed Japanese woman

A Seoul court held a hearing Wednesday to determine whether to issue an arrest warrant for a man who hit and killed a Japanese woman, and injured her daughter while driving under the influence earlier this week.

The incident took place at around 10 p.m. Sunday at an intersection near Dongdaemun Station, a popular shopping and tourist area, when the suspect, a man in his 30s who was found to have been under the influence of alcohol, hit the victims as they were crossing the street.

The woman in her 50s and her daughter were on a three-day trip to Korea.

The suspect appeared for the 3 p.m. hearing at the Seoul Central District Court and said he was "sorry" when asked by reporters if he had anything to say to the victim's family.

He has reportedly told police he is willing to cover the costs of transporting the body of the victim and the funeral expenses.
