By You Soo-sun A woman was arrested for forging certificates to register the births of two children that never happened, police said Thursday.The 41-year-old former flight attendant, identified by her surname Ryu, faces charges of fraud and forgery, as she collected over 48 million won ($42,561) in child benefits from her employer and the government.According to the Gangnam Police Station, Ryu submitted fraudulent birth records to Gangnam-gu Office in March 2010, then again in September 2012.She received over 10 million won in child benefits from the government, 18 million from her workplace and another 20 million from her employment insurance while she took pregnancy and maternity leaves.Ryu claimed she forged the documents as she “wanted kids” and said she applied for the child benefits to avoid suspicion from the district office. The child allowances, she testified, were used to cover her “daily living expenses.”The police believe there is little credibility to her testimony.A police investigation came following a request by the Seoul Metropolitan Offi

2 dead, 1 missing in ship collision off Pohang

Two men were killed and another went missing after a fishing boat collided with a barge in waters off Pohang on South Korea's southeastern coast Thursday, the Coast Guard said.Around 4:42 a.m., the 4.6-ton fishing boat collided with the 1,207-ton barge at the entrance of a port in the city of Pohang, causing the three fishermen on the boat to drown.The Coast Guard rescued two of the three, but they were pronounced dead at a hospital later.A search for the missing fisherman was under way by mobilizing seven patrol ships, nine shipping boats, three Navy ships and two helicopters, it said.The collision took place as the barge towed by a tugboat from Ulleung Island in the East Sea hit the fishing boat while entering the port. The boat was submerged with only 20 centimeters of its bow visible.The Coast Guard said it is looking into the exact cause of the accident. (Yonhap)

By Woo Ji-wonA woman has been arrested on charges of cutting off her husband’s penis while he was sleeping, police said Monday.According to Yeosu Police Station, the incident happened at an apartment in Yeosu, South Jeolla Province, at 11:58 p.m. on Saturday.The woman, 54, whose is unidentified, allegedly cut off the tip of the penis with a kitchen knife and flushed the flesh down the toilet.A neighbor found the husband, left in pain, and took him to a nearby hospital, where he is in stable condition.A police investigation revealed that the couple were on unhealthy terms.Not only had the husband been violent to the woman, she had harbored a grudge because he gave her no money, but spent lavishly on his own enjoyment, such as like playing golf.Police suspected the husband may have been attacked for cheating on his spouse, but they have no evidence of this.Police are still investigating.

Six missing after fishing boat capsizes off Pohang

By Park Si-sooSix sailors are missing after a fishing boat capsized off Pohang on Wednesday.Three crew ― including the captain, surnamed Kim, 58 ― were rescued. A search is under way to find the missing sailors, according to the coast guard.The 27-ton vessel “K” capsized about 35 kilometers east of Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, at around 12:50 p.m. shortly after sending a distress call.
