Man detained after hospital bomb threat

YonhapBy Jung Min-ho, Kang Aa-youngA man has been detained for allegedly threatening to bomb a major hospital in Seoul, police said Tuesday.The man in his 30s, whose identity is being withheld, told police Monday night (at around 8:45 p.m.) that he had planted a bomb that “will go off in 10 minutes” at the Severance Hospital in Sinchon, according to the Seodaemun Police Station.Police immediately sent their bomb disposal unit there and told everyone, including patients and their families, to be prepared for evacuation.After searching seven hospital buildings and apprehending the caller at a hotel in the city, police stopped their search at around 11:45 p.m.Police said the man was drunk when he called. They are investigating why he made the threats.

By Jung Min-hoA firefighter is under investigation after allegedly trying to rape a woman on Jeju Island last week, police said Monday.According to Jeju Dongbu Police Station, the firefighter, 29, injured the woman, in her 20s, during the attempted rape at a beach at 10:30 p.m. on March 11.The victim, whose identity is being withheld, said she suffered injuries to her arms and legs as she fought back.She escaped and told a friend what happened. The two later reported it to the police, who apprehended the firefighter at a guesthouse at around 00:35 a.m. on March 12.The firefighter, who is based in Pohang in North Gyeongsang Province, had gone to the island for a holiday and was staying at the same guesthouse as the alleged victim.He reportedly confessed to police, saying he was drunk at the time.

A South Korean woman has died from a fatal fall at a tourist hotspot in Croatia, the government said Sunday.The woman in her 50s, whose name was kept private, fell off a cliff and into a lake at Plitvice Lakes National Park in central Croatia on Saturday (local time), according to the foreign ministry.The victim, who was in Croatia for sightseeing, was moved to a hospital but later passed away."It's presumed that the she fell after losing her footing due to the rain," a foreign ministry official said. A message for his family was found on his mobile phone.“It appears that he was under overwhelming pressure,” the school said in a statement. “We will stop the investigation over the allegations.”Three students, who did not reveal their names, accused the professor of sexual harassment on Facebook Wednesday, claiming he asked them inappropriate questions such as “Have you ever lied in bed naked with your boy friend?”They also accused him of touching their bodies several times without their consent.

Jeju District Court on Thursday found the man, identified only by his surname Moon, guilty of attempted murder. He had stabbed his wife, 87, three times in an argument at their eldest son's house in September. The court was told that Moon became enraged when his wife told not him to come back. The wife recovered from the stab wound.The court heard that in July, the wife had punched Moon during an argument, so he then went to live with his son. “Regardless of his old age, the nature of crime can't be condoned,” the judge said, also citing the wife's refusal to ask for leniency.
