A firefighter is under investigation after allegedly trying to rape a woman on Jeju Island last week, police said Monday.

According to Jeju Dongbu Police Station, the firefighter, 29, injured the woman, in her 20s, during the attempted rape at a beach at 10:30 p.m. on March 11.

The victim, whose identity is being withheld, said she suffered injuries to her arms and legs as she fought back.

She escaped and told a friend what happened. The two later reported it to the police, who apprehended the firefighter at a guesthouse at around 00:35 a.m. on March 12.

The firefighter, who is based in Pohang in North Gyeongsang Province, had gone to the island for a holiday and was staying at the same guesthouse as the alleged victim.

He reportedly confessed to police, saying he was drunk at the time.
