According to the Pyeongtaek Police Station, Tuesday, a woman in her 30s reported to the police that her lost dog might have been eaten by someone. She lost her two-year-old Welsh Corgi in Cheongbuk-eup, Pyeongtaek City, Gyeonggi Province, March 4. The woman offered 1 million won ($936) as a reward to find the dog and put up signs in the streets. While she was searching for the dog, she got a tip from a friend who said, "Someone has eaten the dog." The suspect was a 63-year-old neighbor.He told the police that the dog was barking too much in the yard so he threw a rock at it. Then the dog was knocked out so he strangled him with electric wires.

Prosecutor convicted of sexual misconduct

A Seoul court on Wednesday sentenced an incumbent district attorney to a suspended jail term for sexually harassing two women whom he met on professional occasions.The Seoul Central District Court meted out the guilty verdict on a 49-year-old surnamed Kim, a prosecutor at the Goyang branch of the Uijeongbu District Prosecutors' Office, and gave him an eight-month jail term, suspended for two years.Kim has been accused of sexually harassing one of his junior colleagues during a dinner in January. He is also suspected of committing a similar offense against a female lawyer in June last year.His case is the first to result in a conviction amid a series of ongoing investigations into alleged sexual abuses by former and sitting prosecutors.A special internal probe team was launched early this year after Seo Ji-hyun, a district attorney in Tongyoung, made a revelation about her experience of sexual abuse by a senior prosecutor, Ahn Tae-geun, years ago.Ahn has faced questioning over the allegations, and the special inquiry team is due to announce details on the results of the investigation

Shinhan face probe over hiring scandal

By Kim Yoo-chul The country's financial regulator said Tuesday that it has begun an investigation into alleged hiring irregularities at Shinhan Bank.“Regarding the issue over hiring irregularities at Shinhan, the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) has started investigating the case,” FSS Governor Kim Ki-sik told reporters.Reports said about 20 sons and daughters of executives at Shinhan Financial Group, which has Shinhan Card and Shinhan Bank under its wing, received “extra favors and credits” when being hired by group affiliates.“The FSS didn't find any hiring irregularities at Shinhan Financial Group and its affiliates in last year's inspection; however, the regulator recently received requests for a new investigation into such allegations,” an FSS spokesman said.Shinhan Bank, Shinhan Card and Shinhan Capital are the initial targets of the probe. Malaysian arrested over phone scam against Korean jobseekers

By Kang Aa-young, Park Si-soo A Malaysian man has been arrested over a phone scam involving eight Korean victims, police said Tuesday. The scam took place between March 28 and April 6, during which the suspect had duped nearly 88.6 million won ($84,100) from the victims, all jobseekers in their 20s, according to Suwon Nambu Police Station. Police said the suspect's Korean-speaking accomplices in China had made phone calls to the victims pretending to be prosecutors. They demanded the victims withdraw money from their bank accounts and put it in a refrigerator in a hotel room in Gyeonggi Province or they would have trouble getting a job because their accounts had been used in crimes. The Malaysian's role was to take the money out the refrigerator and wire it to his partners in China, police said. The suspect arrived in Korea on March 23 via Incheon International Airport and received 150,000 won per successful case. Police are seeking the help of Chinese police to catch the other gang members.

Korean drug rape suspect repatriated from Vietnam

By Park Si-soo A South Korean man involved in a drug rape case has been arrested in Vietnam and sent back to Seoul, where he is in custody.The suspect, 38, surnamed Shin, allegedly raped a woman at a motel in Gyeonggi Province early last month after giving her the sleep-inducing sedative Zolpidem. He was caught and police sought an arrest warrant. But a court refused because his whereabouts had already been traced through a location-tracking device shackled to his ankle after he was convicted in another rape case. Police learned on April 4 that he had boarded a plane for Vietnam at Incheon International Airport. Police contacted their Vietnamese counterparts, who arrested him at an airport immigration checkpoint. “The suspect would have left the airport and disappeared if Vietnamese police didn't provide quick cooperation,” said a police officer here familiar with the case. Police are investigating how the suspect passed the Korean immigration checkpoint wearing the tracking device.

Man caught after bomb threat to Lotte Hotel

A man in his 30s suffering from mental illness was apprehended Monday after making a hoax call warning of an impending bomb explosion at a Seoul hotel, police said.The man, whose identity was withheld, made the call to police around 8:35 a.m., claiming he had planted an explosive at a Lotte Hotel and that it would go off 10 seconds later.The man didn't specify whether he was referring to the Lotte hotel in Sogong-dong in central Seoul or the Lotte establishment in Jamsil in southern Seoul. Police commandos and rescue workers were immediately dispatched to the two locations to search for a bomb, but nothing was found, officials said.While the search was under way, police apprehended the man in Siheung, just south of Seoul, around 9:40 a.m.Officials said that the man has been receiving treatment for mental illness and he used his father's mobile phone to make the hoax call.Police are questioning him on charges of obstructing official duties with a falsehood.
