S. Korea, US military train for N. Korea refugee crisis

South Korean and U.S. marines conducted their first joint drill to brace for a possible exodus of North Korean refugees in the event of an emergency situation, a military official said Thursday. The exercise, also involving the South Korean Navy, is part of the nine-day joint landing exercises which will run until Sunday in the southeastern city of Pohang, the Marine Corps said. The exercise focused on how to accommodate and provide humanitarian support to North Korean refugees in the event of conflict or the sudden collapse of the North regime that could lead to an outflow of people. The civil-military operation brought together around 130 American soldiers and special personnel who have experience in assisting refugees in Afghanistan, it said. The South Korean Navy and Marine Corps have jointly operated a unit set up to take part in operations to support possible North Korean refugees."The exercise helped us share experiences with U.S. soldiers in accommodating and helping refugees," said a Marine Corps officer. The allies also conducted a joint drill to transport equipment needed for a

US intelligence officials negative about S. Korea's nuclear armament, but say it's up to Seoul

U.S. intelligence officials reacted negatively to calls in South Korea for the country's own nuclear armament, but said it is ultimately up to the country whether to pursue the option or not, according to South Korean lawmakers Tuesday.Reps. Won Yoo-chul of the ruling Saenuri Party and Lee In-young of the Minjoo Party made the remark, saying they met with officials of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI)."They said it's basically an issue that South Korea should make a decision on, but questioned whether it would be effective," Lee told South Korean reporters. The North's fifth nuclear test in September has given rise to greater calls in South Korea for the country's own nuclear armament, with not only lawmakers of the conservative ruling Saenuri Party, but also members of liberal opposition parties making the pro-nuclear weapons case. The government of President Park Geun-hye has rejected such an idea as running against the principle of a Korean Peninsula free of nuclear weapons. Officials also say it would have negat

US floating radar carried out surveillance mission near Korean Peninsula

A U.S. floating radar station has returned to its home port of Hawaii after carrying out a surveillance mission near the Korean Peninsula with its advanced sensors, a South Korean military official said Tuesday."The U.S. sea-based X-Band (SBX) radar was sent to an undisclosed location off the Korean Peninsula for a one-month deployment after departing Hawaii in late September. It sailed back to its home port in late October," the official told Yonhap news agency. He didn't provide details about the mission and the vessel's route, citing the sensitivity of the matter. The SBX radar is aimed at detecting and tracking long-range ballistic missiles and rockets over the high seas. The data collected can be used to assess the capabilities and performance of a missile and help defend against the threat down the line.According to many military officials, the North's long-range intercontinental missiles could theoretically hit parts of the U.S. mainland. The SBX which displaces some 50,000 tons has a 116 meter by 85 meter radar system installed on its deck and has the capability to detect missil

3 military systems to counter N. Korea: Kill Chain, KAMD, KMPR

By Jun Ji-hyeWhile North Korea has been apparently upgrading its nuclear and missile capabilities daily, eyes are on which measures South Korea holds to cope with such threats. In response to security concerns heightened especially after Pyongyang’s fifth and most powerful nuclear test on Sept. 9, the military said it will deal with the reclusive state and its possible nuclear attack using South Korea’s three-pronged defense system. The three elements are the Kill Chain preemptive strike system, the Korean Air and Missile Defense (KAMD) and the Korea Massive Punishment and Retaliation (KMPR) plan.Kill Chain is a system to carry out a preemptive strike against Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile facilities if Seoul is faced with an imminent threat, while the KAMD would trace and shoot down North Korean ballistic missiles heading for South Korea. The KMPR would be used to punish and retaliate against North Korea if it strikes South Korea. The government initially planned to deploy the three systems in the mid-2020s. But after the North claimed that during the latest test it

S. Korea, US special forces conduct joint drill to strike core N. Korean facilities

South Korean Army's special warfare command and its U.S. counterpart have recently carried out a joint exercise to practice "surgical strikes" against North Korea's nuclear and missile facilities, military officials said Thursday."The U.S. Air Force's 353rd Special Operations Group conducted a combined striking exercise against an enemy's facilities with the South Korean Army's special forces brigade at a military base in Gunsan (274 kilometers south of Seoul)," a defense official said told Yonhap News Agency.Under the "Teak Knife" drill, the two allies focused on sending their special forces into North Korea through fixed-wing aircraft in the event of a conflict on the Korean peninsula, he said. The allies have regularly carried out the Teak Knife drill since the 1990s, but it is rare to make it public. The official said releasing information is mainly due to escalating tensions on the peninsula and in the Asia-Pacific region due to the North's continued nuclear and missile development programs. S. Korean fighter jets return from 3-week joint exercise in Alaska

South Korean fighters returned from a three-week joint exercise held in Alaska to sharpen their combat skills amid growing threats from North Korea, the Air Force said Wednesday.Six F-15K fighter jets flew to the Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska early this month to join the 'Red Flag' exercise presided over by the U.S. Pacific Air Forces from Oct. 3-21, the Air Force said in a statement."The multinational exercise was held at a time when threats of military provocations by the North remain at their highest-ever level. The Air Force focused on improving its combat capabilities in case of a conflict on the Korean Peninsula," the statement said. The Red Flag exercise, also attended by the air forces of the U.S., New Zealand and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), practiced for combat by simulating striking targets in enemy territory. No doubt North Korea is one of the enemies simulated, as it has escalated its saber-rattling with its nuclear and missile development programs. This year alone, it has conducted two nuclear tests and launched a series of ballistic missiles with an

Park reaffirms sanctions to end N. Korea nuke program

President Park Geun-hye Monday reaffirmed South Korea's policy stance to impose sanctions on North Korea to press the communist country to give up its nuclear weapons program."The Korean Peninsula is currently faced with a security situation which is unprecedentedly grave and grim," Park said in her speech delivered at the National Assembly, intended to outline the government's budgetary requirements for 2017.She said North Korea's nuclear weapons program is moving from the test phase toward the weaponization stage, highlighting that Seoul "will muster the international community's forces to put stronger-than-ever pressure and sanctions so as to leave North Korea with no other choice (than denuclearization)."Her message comes as the United Nations Security Council is in the process of adopting a fresh round of sanctions on North Korea after the country conducted its fifth nuclear test last month in defiance of the latest UNSC Resolution 2270. The resolution passed in March was the strongest sanctions slapped on Pyongyang to date.South Korea is also reviewing its own set of sanctions
