Relocation of US Army bases to Pyeongtaek delayed to 2018

The complete relocation of U.S. Army bases to Pyeongtaek has been pushed back by two years to the end of 2018, Gyeonggi Province and Pyeongtaek City said Sunday. The original plan, which started on Jan. 24, 2005, was to finish the relocation at the end of this year. The U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) headquarters and the Eighth United States Army, both in Yongsan, central Seoul, and the 2nd Infantry Division in northern Gyeonggi Province, are subject to move to Camp Humphreys, a U.S. military garrison in the town of Pyeongtaek, 70 kilometers south of Seoul."The construction has reached 93 percent of completion as of last month and the USFK headquarters and the Eighth Army are scheduled to move in around June-August as planned. But we've decided to extend the project by two more years to transfer all the facilities more smoothly," a Defense Ministry official said.A person close to the construction of the relocation site in Pyeongtaek said some of the building construction was being delayed because of the sheer size of the project, which involves building more than 900 buildings and city infr

N. Korea may develop ICBM capable of hitting US mainland by 2020: report

North Korea is believed to have secured a technology to miniaturize nuclear warheads and load them onto its Scud and Nodong ballistic missiles, a report issued by a Seoul government think tank said Sunday. The Institute for National Security Strategy under the National Intelligence Service said in its 2016 annual report that North Korea is expected to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching the U.S. mainland by 2020 at the latest after drastically increasing the number of its nuclear warheads."The seriousness of the North Korean nuclear program lies in the rapid growth in the number of warheads, as well as its miniaturization and diversification. The North is estimated to have succeeded in developing nuclear warheads on par with boosted fission weapons through its fourth and fifth nuclear tests," the report said.Notably, the blast in its fifth nuclear test on Sept. 9 this year was measured at 10 to 20 kilotons, compared with 7.9 kilotons in its third test and 6 kilotons in its fourth test, the report showed, citing some progress in the explosive power. The ins

Navy conducts military exercise to defend Dokdo islets

South Korea's Navy on Wednesday conducted a maritime drill to defend the country's easternmost islets of Dokdo in the East Sea, officials said, as Japan has laid persistent claims to the sovereign territory. The Navy kicked off a biannual military exercise to guard Dokdo from unlawful intrusion by mobilizing its warships and maritime patrol planes, it said.If weather conditions permit, the Marine Corps is also expected to conduct a landing drill on the islets, it said.Since 1986, the South Korean Navy and Coast Guard have carried out joint maneuvers twice a year in waters near the islets, which lie some 87 kilometers southeast of Ulleung Island and lie closer to Korea than Japan. Japan has lodged a protest against Seoul's move.Japan has long claimed sovereignty over Dokdo, and it is one of the thorniest diplomatic issues between the neighbors. Japan colonized the Korean Peninsula from 1910-45.The Navy had planned to conduct an exercise to defend the islets last month when it carried out maritime drills but decided on a delay. This raised speculation that the country delayed the drill

S. Korea to develop long-range air-to-surface missile

South Korea will push to develop its own indigenous long-range air-to-ground missile to cope with the growing military threat from North Korea, the state arms procurement agency said Wednesday. The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) plans to start its research on relevant missile technologies from 2018 with a plan to produce some 200 air-to-surface Taurus-class missiles until 2031.The missile will be mounted on the KF-X fighter jets to be developed by mid-2020s. The military will spend an estimated 810 billion won ($695.2 million) on the project. The missile will be modeled after the Taurus which has a 500-kilometer range and can be fired from the country's F-15K. It is known to be capable of hitting the capital city of Pyongyang when fired from a plane flying over Daejeon, 164 kilometers south of Seoul. The military is currently deploying the German long-range air-to-ground missile within this year. The North has continued to enhance its military capabilities, carrying out two nuclear tests and dozens of missile launches this year alone.
