Anti-Japan sentiment resurfaces over Dokdo
Japan's unwavering claims to South Korea's easternmost islets of Dokdo look set to appear in a new series of school textbooks, stirring up anti-Japan sentiment among the Korean public once again.
On Wednesday, following a year-long review, the Japanese government approved the new textbooks containing references to Dokdo as Japanese territory, paving the way for their use in middle schools starting next school year.
South Korea has vowed to take stern measures in protest of the claims on Dokdo, with the foreign ministry planning to issue a statement and summon Tokyo's ambassador to Seoul.
Civic groups here have also expressed disappointment, citing their efforts to help the Japanese people in the aftermath of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
Ahn Seon-mi, an official at the Korean Council for Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan, said the Japanese government should "be held responsible for sure" regarding the textbooks.
The council's protest is growing stronger in light of its recent activities to help victims of the earthquake. Days after the disaster, it started collecting relief funds and held a memorial event for the victims in place of its weekly protest rallies in front of the Japanese embassy. The council has been demanding an official apology for the abuse of Korean women during World War II.
"Some people are already saying that this isn't the time to be holding memorial gatherings, considering the actions of the Japanese government," Ahn said.
The Voluntary Agency Network of Korea (VANK), a non-governmental organization that seeks to correct Japan's distortions of history among other activities, also condemned Japan for creating controversy. The organization started donating all of its new membership fees to Japan's relief efforts earlier this month.
"The world will regard us as having offered a gesture of peace in the face of Japan's disaster, but it will regard Japan as having thrown cold water on Asia's peace," said Park Ki-tae, a VANK official. "Japan will lose its place in the international community as it continues to fuel conflicts."
The state-backed charity agency Community Chest of Korea, meanwhile, was more cautious about linking the two issues.
"We are not an organization that makes political judgments," said an official at the agency. "All I can say is that we'll make sure to deliver all the donations from citizens." (Yonhap)
'모처럼 조성된 우호분위기 깨버렸다' 비판
일본 대지진 피해자를 도우려는 한국인의 모금이 이어지는 가운데 일본 정부가 독도 영유권 주장을 담은 중학교 교과서를 채택할 움직임을 보이자 시민단체를 중심으로 모처럼 조성된 양국간 우호분위기를 깨버렸다는 비판이 일고 있다.
정대협이나 반크 등 일본의 과거 행적을 비판하고 역사 왜곡에 맞서온 단체들은 일본 정부가 독도 영유권 주장이 담긴 교과서를 채택하려 하는데 대해 강한 실망감을 드러내고 있다.
지진 발생 닷새째인 16일 19년간 한 차례도 빠짐없이 이어온 수요집회를 추모집회로 바꾸고 18일부터 지진 피해자를 돕기 위한 모금활동을 시작한 정대협은 독도 영유권 주장과 관련해 일본 정부에 책임을 물어야 한다고 격한 반응을 보였다.
안선미 정대협 기획팀장은 "이번 교과서 문제에 대해서는 일본 정부에 확실히 책임을 물어야 한다. 이미 일본 정부가 하는 것을 보고 추모집회를 벌일 때가 아니라는 목소리가 나오고 있다"고 전했다.
이달 17일부터 한달 동안 새로 가입하는 회원의 가입비를 모두 지진 피해자 구호금을 내놓기로 한 외교사절단 반크 역시 일본 정부가 모처럼 조성된 한•일 우호분위기를 깨버렸다고 비판했다.
박기태 반크 단장은 "세계인에게 우리는 일본의 재앙에 평화의 손을 내민 것으로, 일본은 아시아의 평화에 찬물을 끼얹은 것으로 비춰질 것"이라며 "지속적으로 갈등을 일으키는 일본은 국제사회에서 설 자리를 잃을 것"이라고 말했다.
사이버 공간에서는 더 거친 반응이 쏟아졌다. 주한일본대사를 추방하라거나 당장 모금활동을 중단하고 지금까지 모은 돈을 일본의 역사 왜곡을 막는 데 써야한다는 주장도 나왔다.
'pa******'이라는 아이디를 쓰는 누리꾼은 "관동대지진 때 일본에 끌려간 우리 조상 2만명이 일본인에게 살해당했는데 이번에 일본을 돕는다는 것 자체가 말이 안 된다. 이미 걷은 돈은 재일동포를 돕는 데 써야한다"는 의견을 올렸다.
'원**'라는 누리꾼은 "일본의 얄팍한 꼼수를 아직도 모르나. 짝사랑도 유분수"라며 모금활동 중단을 촉구했다.
