Meet Korea’s pioneering ‘instant noodle critic’

For many, instant noodles are a quick, cheap meal designed for convenience. But for Ji Young-jun, Korea's pioneering "ramyeon critic," they represent a lifetime of history, complex food science and a rapidly growing cultural phenomenon. Ji’s unconventional journey into the world of noodles began during a period of personal frustration. After enduring consecutive failures on Korea's grueling college entrance exam, he enlisted in the military. It was while wandering the aisles of the military commissary (PX) that he found an unexpected spark of inspiration. "Before finishing my service, I set a humble goal for myself: 'Let’s taste every single instant noodle available here,'" Ji recalls during an interview with The Korea Times, Monday. "Astonishingly, that simple objective completely revitalized my military life and filled it with excitement. I wanted to carry this amazing energy into the civilian world, so in 2013, I began sharing my detailed reviews on social media." For a decade, Ji balanced his passion for instant noodles with a stable career as a primary school teacher. However,

Yoido Full Gospel Church to celebrate 65th anniversary

The facade of today's Yoido Full Gospel Church in southern Seoul's Yeongdeungpo District / Courtesy of Yoido Full Gospel ChurchFrom tent church to Korea's largest Protestant churchBy Sah Dong-seokYoido Full Gospel Church will mark its 65th anniversary on May 18. Founded by Rev. Cho Yong-gi in 1958 in a tent, it has grown remarkably over a short period of time, and nowadays draws the largest number of believers in Korea for worship. The church has a unique position in that it let Pentecostalism, a Christian movement that emphasizes the direct personal experience of God through baptism with the Holy Spirit, take center stage in the Korean Protestant world, where the Presbyterian denomination prevails. Senior Pastor Lee Young-hoon, who is leading the megachurch after Rev. Cho died in September 2021, has also become a leader of the Korean church circle, concurrently serving as the president of the United Christian Churches of Korea. The number of Yoido Full Gospel Church members reached 500,000 at the end of 1985. The figure exceeded 700,000 in 1992 although many major churches in Seoul an

Yoido Full Gospel Church has consistently coordinated relief and aid efforts for the underprivileged across the nation since 1982. Courtesy of Yoido Full Gospel ChurchBy Sah Dong-seokYoido Full Gospel Church is preparing to hold a variety of events under the theme of “Re-Bible, Revival” to celebrate the 120th anniversary of Hardie's mission and the 65th anniversary of its foundation. The highlight of those events will be a prayer meeting to be held on May 17 to 21 in the church. Robert Alexander Hardie was a Canadian physician and Methodist evangelist who served as a missionary in Korea for 45 years. He is recognized as the catalyst for the Wonsan Revival in 1903 which later inspired the Great Pyongyang Revival of 1907 in North Korea. Church officials say the prayer meeting will serve as an occasion to look back on the faith and life of Hardie who led the Korean church's spiritual revival movement and prayed for the revival of the Korean church under the themes of “repentance and blessing,” “filled with Holy Spirit” and “gratitude.” Sen

Korea Times photo by Shim Hyun-chulBy Park Han-solFor Yoido Full Gospel Church, the largest Protestant house of worship in Korea, the year 2023 marks a crucial moment in more ways than one.Not only does the megachurch, which started out in 1958 by holding services under a makeshift tent in northwestern Seoul, celebrate its 65th anniversary on May 18, it will also commemorate the 120th anniversary of the 1903 Great Spiritual Revival that took place in Wonsan in present-day North Korea in August.“Starting from the end of last year, many Christian institutions across Korea and around the world, including our church, are witnessing a new wave of spiritual revival,” Rev. Lee Young-hoon, the senior pastor at the church, remarked during an interview with The Korea Times. “It feels like we are coming out of a long winter and welcoming spring, where everything is radiating with life.”Throu

Men's widening income gap new clue behind Korea's declining birthrate

Amount of wage is a clear indicator behind likelihood of Korean men choosing to either get married and have children or stay single, according to a recent study released Sunday. GettyimagesbankBy Ko Dong-hwanHow confident a working male in Korea is with his wallets or bank accounts happens to be a clear boost to their decision to score wedlock, a recent study by a state-run researcher found. In other words, those lacking financial security are more likely to see themselves as better off staying single ― directly resulting in lowered chances for people to meet, get married and have babies. The research outcome released by the Korea Labor Institute on Sunday showed this trend became more pronounced as men got older. The research on the relationship between employment and intention to procreate shows the growing risk of an income gap among Korean men might be a major factor.Despite the steady improvement in working conditions for men compared to the past, the country has been witnessing a declining number of marriages, according to Kwak Eun-hye from the institute who penned the report.
